In this coda to the Open Books series, I talk about small business mentors, including in music retail, who I have looked to for inspiration and why.

I love being a Gen Xer. We’re placed just right in history to get the best of the past and tech savvy enough to get along. Wouldnt want to be a youngster today.

Need more of this please. What did you did you do to meet the compromise that ultimately led you to purchase the business. Was it in place before the purchase or developed after? What steps did you go through to determine what you wanted and how to achieve it? What happened to your other business? What are your current plans for how to proceed in the future? So many questions. I sincerely hope you decide to continue with or a similarly themed series. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all of your videos, Mark. I work at a local shop in Upstate NY and am considering taking it over in the future much as you have described here. Your shared experience has been an enjoyable resource! P.S. I also love a good silverface Fender Champ!

Excellent advice. It's important to choose a business that actually works with your productive hours, your general interest and knowledge, your ambitions, and your "Zen". I really enjoy your videos. Thanks.

It seemed like buying the store was a good healthy choice. And I appreciate everything you have to say. Honestly I would enjoy working for a fellow like yourself. I'm learning to work on instruments. I've built a couple guitars. And I have some plans to build instruments. See you next time!

Running your own business is an art, get it righ and you can enjoy it. Get it wrong and you will have a lot of sleepless nights. I ran my own electronics repair business for a few years between jobs, mostly it was good but then the bad times set in, and more was going out than i was making so i returned to full time employment. Good luck for the future, who knows how things will be in another 10 or 20 years.

This was an interesting topic series. But also a great channel in general or guitar geeks like myself.., Thanks Mark 🙏 If you don't mind me asking, has any notable musicians (like Joe Bonamassa) walked in your store looking for vintage guitars or gear? I use him for example as I consider him the king of all guitar geeks. Please keep the content going, Thanks again🎸

Hi Mark, my name is Dorsey, I called 4.23.2024, put you on the spot as far as book recommendations. I am halfway thru Yankee Storekeeper. What are two other books you recommend? I am a consumer but the business of retail interest me. I watched a camera store go out of business and I dumpster dove their throwaways for three months. Now a guitar store is there. I buy things, trade things and donate things and tip the workers. I do not like the Guitar center nearby as it's depressing to me, like cheap cuts of meat ready at giveaway prices. I really am enjoying Yankee Storekeeper. I think you mentioned you may respond to this on a video, that would be great. Big thanks!!
