Thanks Ben, I love fishing and particularly love the north Cornwall coast. Unfortunately it’s only holidays when I get the chance. I have always fished for Bass almost exclusively with lures. But a place I visit really fits the description you gave and I’m eager to try for Gilthead bream. I normally fish in north Wales, the Giltheads haven’t got that far north yet but still Bass to fish for. Thanks again 👍🎣

Nice one William, pretty much all the places I fish for gilts are bass marks as well so hopefully you will find that your spot is frequented by bream too 😁

Used to catch a fair few fishing at night years ago. Quite a few from shallow flat sandy bays on both Cornwall coasts. When I fished the estuaries, hard back crab always took bigger fish.

Great video, articulate, intelligent and very clear. I live on the Dorset/ Hampshire border coast, an area not really recognised as prime gilthead territory although there are plenty of black bream available. Your observations have prompted me to have a re-think and consider giltheads but maybe I would need to fish more from the rocky Dorset coast to the west of where I live on the Purbeck coast for example.Would you say that black bream territory is likely to hold giltheads or are their feeding habits significantly different?
@HookpointFishingMagazine
@HookpointFishingMagazine 2 года назад
I’ve not personally heard of any gilts on the rocks there. They tend to be on the same ground as the stingray as you get into Hampshire. A lot of it is down to trial and error though.
@benthemulleteer
@benthemulleteer 2 года назад
Hi David, I've fished very little around that area but I do know that the nature of the coastline and the sea around there are quite different from what I am used to where I fish so I would expect the fish to behave differently. It's got to be worth trying those rockier marks but I think for a good chance of sizeable fish there has to be a lot of crustaceans and molluscs present. If there isn't a ready supply of food like that, I think it's more likely that the gilts would look for easier pickings inside estuaries, harbours and sandy areas where there are things like worms and razors on the cards. I've heard of big fish from Dorset so they are definitely there to he caught! 😁

Hi from Israel. Have you ever tried using small crankbaits? We don't get a lot of guiltheads here but whilst lure fishing for white bream we do catch the occasional one.
@HookpointFishingMagazine
@HookpointFishingMagazine Год назад
Hi Nigel! I’ve never tried lure fishing for them myself but I’ve heard of very occasional ones caught by bass anglers fishing lures. I think the bream over here have a lesser instinct to attack other fish than they do in other parts of their range, maybe because there aren’t as many similar species. For instance, further south, there are lots of other smaller species of bream that they would share habitat with.
@nigelridley4864
@nigelridley4864 Год назад
@@HookpointFishingMagazine Hi, I wasn't meaning using lures that imitate small fish, rather crankbaits that would, using a 2 turn then short twitch, imitate a crab - good colors for us are gold, dark red, green etc,. You can also try softplastics that resemble baby lobsters such as crawdad ones. On our (sinking) crankbaits we remove the belly hook and split ring and crimp a 2g football (American) split shot to give it extra grip in lively conditions. Of course you would need lighter gear but if you can find a good spot close to the water then you will have a great fight on your hands ......
@HookpointFishingMagazine
@HookpointFishingMagazine Год назад
Ah, what I understand by crankbait is some sort of fish imitating hard lure like a plug. Do you mean you use hard lures that imitate crabs? I have never used anything like that before! Apparently people have tried lure fishing for them with soft crab imitation lures here but I don’t know anybody that uses that as a frontline method so I imagine that means it’s not very effective here.
@nigelridley4864
@nigelridley4864 Год назад
@@HookpointFishingMagazine Fish are attracted to movement. You yourself said in your video that sometimes just moving your bait will induce a strike so a fat crankbait in a suitable color,, should also induce a strike if worked property. If nobody is using this method in the UK then obviously no fish will be caught... Perhaps you could try it at a suitable spot whilst your bait rig is waiting for a bite? Just wanted to add that in Australia they have great success with this type of fishing for their bream - not sure what species exactly.

Here in new Zealand there are two kinds of bream/ snapper ,,, the smaller fish are scavengers and the large fish are predators,,,,upsize the bait and hook size accordingly
@HookpointFishingMagazine
@HookpointFishingMagazine Год назад
I bet your predator snappers run a lot bigger than our bream too! 😄 can you catch them on lures too?
@eladnotro6559
@eladnotro6559 Год назад
@@HookpointFishingMagazine yes they take lures . I personally use 40lb main line and 60 lb trace 7/0 hooks on the Surfcaster now after regularly being busy off on lighter gear
