Straight shooter, the reason Pagan and Mathew's liked him was because he was the sort of guy that stabilised teams, dependable, loyal and thrived in the trenches when the chips were down.
I think it was Simon Black that said the Leigh ran a tight ship and didn't suffer excuses or fools well at all, including the drink. But if Pikey turned up at training on Sunday clearly under the weather after a big night Leigh would just happen then to look the other way because he knew what he brought to the team. Anyone else and they were gone.
pikey was my favourite player as a Brisbane lions supporter.. only reinforced by meeting him at the casino. on the black jack table. I was shocked that he was there. and was just a normal person. I left my cigarettes on the table when I lost my money. mister martin pike found me 40 minutes later and gave my smokes back. what a legend for no other reason... a real man and a real human while absolute superstar on field... wish more sportsmen more like him..
ben field I play darts against him in the Northern Darts Association in Melbourne, I’m a north fan, he’s an absolute gun, legend and a gentleman. But he definitely likes a drink during the week these days 👍 Love the Open Mike interviews
I remember a function in 1996 I was at, it was an after game event at the FFC Hotel, and Pikey was drunk, wearing a wig and singing karaoke. He was in no way offensive and had a singing style reminiscent of Lee Marvin's Wand'rin' Star, so made me smile :)
The game has deteriorated since his era. Then they could have a beer, money and personal life wasn't so much an issue. It's been sanitised like society in general. Just robots now.
In the first Grand Final with Brisbane, straight after leaving North Melbourne, I would have awarded Martin Pike the Norm Smith Medal. He was impenetrable and impeccable. But the Norm Smith Medal always gets awarded to midfielders, same with the Brownlow Medal.
He left North at the perfect time. It was a blessing in disguise really from a football sense anyway. 2001 North missed the finals for the first time since 1992 and then at the end of that year was the affair scandal and the club didn’t challenge again for another decade. Instead he went to Brisbane and won 3 straight premierships and a 4th grand final.
I didn’t know about the controversies of his career mainly because I remember him at Brisbane Lions and there was no major controversies. He was a brilliant player.
He was an excellent player & comes across as a genuine bloke but his drink-driving record shouldn't be minimized as some young fella mucking up. He was lucky he wasn't jailed in 1996.
As a Troo Roo! Pikey was worth a lot more than what he got paid!!! The 99 GF he was almost best on ground! He battled with the worst clubs at the time in Melbourne and Fitzroy, had all the talent, North Melbourne exposed that and the Brisbane Lions exploited that!!! But i love the message to #JarrodMolloy that Mal Michael sent
Scraping the bottom of the barrel. Met him down in Hobart in 2015 at the Salamanca markets at a local cafe. Tried to cut the line in front of me. Total flog.
And you've never done that in your entire life??! Come live in Sydney...or any city...it's a daily occurrence..Deal with it. Yeah, not polite on his part but he didn't kill anyone
@@russnation3386 he comments this on every Open Mike video. Just about every AFL player ever tried to cut the line in front of him at the Salamanca Markets in 2015
Haha good point! However he was probably cut seeing some of his team mates getting a hell of a lot more of the pie so to speak. Totally agree though, i'd do anything for 150 grand Lol :P
+TigerCeltKing Don't think he's complaining, just responding to the question. A few players at the Lions were being payed unders during the glory days from what I've herd.
