Open Scoring fixes nothing, it just avoids the fixing of anything with another useless change to the system. Teach everyone how you score fights, break it down clearly with some simple content, and then enforce that on the judges and fire them if they are consistently wrong. These massive changes fix nothing. Enforce what you already have.
@john26razor340

Spot on. The focus should be on the fundamentals. These changes would everything but the essential... the fact these judges don't have a strong grasp of how to score fights in MMA, and that they aren't being held to account for consistently bad decisions. It's like everyone wants to avoid focusing on the real problem, and by doing so, will create a whole new set of problems with this ridiculous open scoring system that is so obviously flawed.

I think they trying to kill the ESPN deal. Why put on good cards when they already getting 500,000 ppv buys from ESPN guaranteed. Disney made it hard for Dana to put on shows when Co-vid 1st hit. ESPN reports shit UFC doesn’t like. Can the UFC keep affording to pay top 15 fighters on fight nights with no crowd? Barely any Top 15 fighters are fighting right now. It’s ridiculous!!

im just sick of decisions man. i have been for years. for a very long time. im totally serious here, i would genuinely risk the odd 1 hr match of lay and pray if it meant every fight got finished. MOST, i truly believe MOST would adapt to a finishing mindset over 'i can win a decision, i can last the rounds or even at worse, i got more points.' theres two points i have that i think counter pretty much any arguement about trying this. theres zero excuse about trying out a card of this. zero. and do it in front of a crowd. they could even market as the old original system, while maintaining the inteligent moves that preserves the figher safety. such as the 20 groin punches. but two points, one, we are WAAAAY beyond the days where fighters gas and the rounds are at the fighters limits. this simply doesnt exist 99-100 fights. the fighters and the sport itself has outgrown to the point that we are mimicking the pacing of the old karate tournaments. and well, new karate too. but they have outgrown it. as much as many fighters would deny and despise the term, many fights involve 'point-fighting'. this is simply an organic reaction to camping based on rounds and settling in to the sport evolving into this. i dont blame the fighters, especially old ones but its the simple reality that many times the plan was around lasting rounds, a 3 round battle, a 5 round war and PLANNING on decisions. planning on it. banking on and gameplanning 'lasting, LASTING' the rounds. an entire camp, based on safety as opposed to a camp focused on nothing but finishing. second point. IT WAS EXTREMELY SUCCESFUL WHEN IT EXISTED IN THIS FASHION. proven, not guess work. so lets experiment with the refined sport of today in a structure thats been tested, part of the structure present in the sports founding. i truly truly believe this will eliminate 70% of boring fights. it may be 90, but it fixes alot of issues organically, by its nature. by the mindset going into camps, by the deep water of knowing a judge cant save them because they 'appeared' to have *ahem...octagon control. i am absolutely sick of decisions and its why i follow bare-knuckle so much. for me, bare-knuckle right now scratches the itches of the old ufc days in its brutality, and theres almost never a decision making the cards just a next-level experience. on the brutality, i like it brutal but i also dont because i know it means alot less longevity and i LIKE the fighters being able to fight. but im still wathcing holy shit, theres some serious action. and honestly, alot of comments about how much more satisfying it is than the ufc. ...because of the fkn decisions, lack of finishes and it just ISNT what it used to be even tho the SPORT is better. the fighters are maybe even better. but fk man, i am SICK of decisions. i stopped watching for a bit after nick diaz and carlos condit. not even for any fanboying but they NEEDED to finish. these close fights that are legit ninja spectacles NEED TO FINISH. rant over for two seconds, the cans ben opened. im sick of decisions.

You're one of the few who are actually speaking out against this idea, and I applaud it. It's such a terrible idea and a non-solution to the problem of terrible judging. I think the idea of bringing 5 judges would maybe get us better result because you'd be bringing in more opportunity to get an accurate opinion of the fight. Open scoring, like you said, would completely change the dynamic of the fights in a terrible way and it's so frustrating to see the so-called experts promote it.

You are one of the many who don't understand that (some of) the judges aren't there to accurately judge fights. Gambling mafias have massive hand in most sports at the highest level. The more money involved, the more so. Certain judges are bought, with scores being premedidated except where there's KO or if totally one sided. Open scoring is a pointless discussion.

Adding more judges does nothing if said judges are just as incompetent, all that will do is create more opportunities for them to fuck it up. Open Scoring doesn't fix anything, however it's a lot better than adding even more randomness into the mix.
@matthewbloss4131
@matthewbloss4131 2 года назад
I agrew i think it's a bad idea and doesn't fix the issues there is, but i can see the opposite side with like it just being like any other sport where scoring is live and a team or person knows what he or she needs to do or that they're behind and like wise on the other side "coasting" to a victory can cost you and they know that.
@john26razor340
@john26razor340 2 года назад
@@markhunt9643 I disagree. I think there's a reason why there are 12 people in a jury for trials rather than three. Basing such an important decision on such a few amount of people leaves more opportunity for radical variablity in decision-making. Bring more "educated" people in to the mix would lower this variablility. Another person indicated that judges are bought and paid for. That may well be true, and perhaps the commisons should be held more accountable, but I think that's an entirely different problem. We have to look at this issue as one the can be ameliorated with incremental changes rather than sweeping reforms like open-judging.

As well as the commentary being blatantly biased towards certain fighters and openly scoring rounds, the UFC also regularly rig and show incorrect fight stats, as well as skewering the viewers' perception by choosing to show certain stats e.g. control time, takedown attempts, total strikes in order to portray the narrative they desire. They also do more subtle things such as at the end of the fight having the camera focus on the fighter they want to show has won. The brainwashing of the UFC.

It's pretty much impossible to stop bad judging (when it's actually bad) and there is nothing that can be done about a judge that holds a bias toward a fighter/fighters, which can often help influence their decisions. I've been an advocate for longer rounds. Non-title fights should be one 10-minute round and a five-minute second round. Title fights should be 3 rounds, the first round being 15 minutes and the next two rounds is five minutes per round. This would increase the likeliness of a finish because one of the fighters will probably gas out faster with fewer breaks, while still keeping the same time frame within each fight. It doesn't eliminate judging entirely, but it would decrease the odds of them being needed and it would also make the fight a little more realistic and less of a simulated experience than it currently is. No more getting saved by the bell after 5 minutes when someone only needed a few more seconds to secure a submission.
@Malygosblues
@Malygosblues 2 года назад
That's interesting with the idea of different length rounds. I'd just like to see some kind of overtime for title fights that haven't come to a clear finish.
@panspermiapancakes
@panspermiapancakes 2 года назад
@@Malygosblues I think PRIDE FC used to do the format I explained above, or something very similar. Longer rounds would likely result in more finishes, though. The breaks in between rounds can be game-changers sometimes. And yeah, a title fight should never end in a draw with a default winner so adding overtime seems like a solid idea.

@panspermiapancakes
@panspermiapancakes 2 года назад
@@monkpato yeah, maybe. I was thinking of every situation where I see a submission coming soon, and the only thing that saved them was the bell. There is an argument to be made that longer rounds would end the fight quicker, you're not being saved by the bell and then allowed to go into the next round, a little more fresh, and restart the "boring" ground game. There is also cardio to consider, longer rounds will result in guys gassing out and not being saved by the bell each round. But yeah, I do see how it would start to favor the ground game more but at the same time, there is more profit incentive for the guys that stand up and put on wars. Those guys get headliners and pushed faster, typically, with a fatter paycheck.

A corner/fighters inability to judge whether or not they are clearly winning or losing is critical. A fighter should never be relying on the judges opinions. You don’t train to win a decision, just fight your fight and go for the finish like you trained for. If you let it go to decision you can’t complain about the judges decisions.

Guru, an investigation needs to be done concerning the live significant strike numbers (a fraudulent thing in itself) and how it may connect to poor judging decisions. As soon as I see flat out wrong Sig. Strike numbers it's almost like clockwork with which fighter wins the decision. A mixture of judging incompetence but also potentially plain ol corruption baby, with that incompetence being aided by wrong stats.

The UFC has nothing to do with the rules or the judges, genius. They don't employ the judges, it isn't a resource issue. Rules and judges are under the state athletic commissions where the event is being held. Judges are appointed by the director of the state athletic commission who is in turn appointed by the governor of the state.

I agree with you it doesn’t fix it you just get to see it quicker. There’s no coming back on the judges whether the score is posted each round or not. Plus there would be fighters and coaches getting more and more frustrated in the fight not after.

Just have a section at the post fight conference where the ref and judges have to go back and report on the main card and how they made their decisions. Let the press ask questions on why and if any other fights need comments they can ask then. It makes the judges/refs have to justify their reasoning, explain the rules and how that played put in the fight. Educating the press, fans, etc and if they make a wrong decision get schooled by the press and hopefully become slightly better over time

1. The athletic commissions need to start punishing these judges if they have a history of bad decisions. Maybe move a judge to a lower regional promotion if they continue to mess up these decisions? 2. We need a set of uniform rules across every single state. Having certain rules in certain states and not in others is not good as a whole. 3. Damage should continue to trump every other stat. Takedowns that amount to nothing shouldn’t count nearly as much as they do. 4. Eyepokes should be heavily penalized. Take away a point after the first eye poke and I guarantee fighters will learn how to close their hands. 5. Weird unwritten rules like “to be the champ you got to beat the champ” shouldn’t have an effect on a decision of who won. If a challenger won the fight even by a small margin, they should get the nod.

Mma scoring asks judges to ignore things they can see with their own eyes, that they'd use to decide who won a real life fight, unless something not measurable is the same. And why we wonder why the judges turn in confused and contradictory desicions.

I don’t understand who won a fight in a real life. There is no guidelines for this? 50 people could watch a real life fight and many have different conclusions. To some people it’s who had a black eye, to someone else it’s who was on top the longest, for others it’s who landed more hits, for some it’s who looks most defeated at the end.
@jessepaiz6356

@@done1961The scoring criteria asks judges to ignore elements like control unless things that can't be measured like damage and aggresion are the same. Yet the judges are also asked to determine even before that stage, to consider effective grappling and striking. In some fights effective grappling and control is expressed entirely through control. We see that in the Holly Holm fight where her effective grappling is to hold and control Veira. So are the judges supposed to consider the cage control in cases where it effective or not? It a dumb system that exists becuase dumb fans were mad that their favorite fighters lost fights that were mostly up against the cage (Benson Henderson fights). They through such a fit, that the rules changedbasically tried to screw that fighter. The problem is, control is a major factor we all consider in any fight and you can't remove control from effective striking or grappling. It naturally going to be present in our minds or even bias us in who we think won. Becuase effective aggresion and damage are so subjective as well, whether control is either a factor such as in the Izzy vs Whittaker fight where Izzy controlled the range and the octogan with his movement, is subjective and subject to bias. We see this own issue with the gurus scoring. In the Rose fight he considers this to be the difference in why Rose should have won, but doesn't in the Izzy(who he hates) fight. We need a better scoring criteria that doesnt ask judges to ignore what they can see with their own eyes, is confusingely part if other scoring critera, and is naturally going to bias any deiscion they make.

I've never felt like open scoring was a "solution" to bad judging, more like a salve that helps to treat some of the symptoms. I don't think that's inherently a bad thing. People argue against it primarily on the basis of "but muh final round COASTING!1!!!1!" And yet that rarely seems to actually materialize in practice more in open round systems like LFA -- not to mention it's not like we don't see plenty of coasting even under the current system as it is. The ideal solution would obviously be better judges with additional experience and training. I wouldn't be opposed to having more of them (five, seven, nine, whatever number is getting suggested these days). That would be great. But it would require lots of overhead and resources from the part of the commissions that I don't see them dedicating at the moment, quite frankly. As it stands, open scoring is an effectively zero-cost measure which -- while it absolutely does *not* "solve" the issue -- does IMO help to mitigate some of the symptoms and could really be a boon in some cases. There's a legitimate argument to be made that Namajunas/Esparza 2 might have become a very different fight had Rose and her corner woken the fuck up once they saw the scorecards being put up in the wake of their "perfect strategy" following the first few rounds -- and that's just a single recent example off the top of my head that doesn't directly correlate to questionable judging. As an aside, I also wouldn't be opposed to the implementation of a half-point scoring system which was toyed with about a decade ago. As it stands, I think a 10-9 covers *waaaaaay* too much ground in the modern scoring criteria: everything from staring contests like Namajunas/Esparza 2 to rounds where one fighter clearly outstruck & outgrappled their opponent for the full five minutes in a clinic but didn't *quite* put their foot on the pedal enough for a 10-8. Having 10-9.5s available for the former would be handy and doesn't bring about the fear of a draw that a 10-10 does. That being said, it would still be a (minor) overhaul of the current scoring criteria and might just come across as convoluted for judges who are already incapable of properly doing their jobs, leading to more Splits. Still worthy a try IMO alongside open scoring.
