At 7am on Sunday morning, 4 October, a portion of Voortrekker Road in the Bellville CBD was eerily quiet. Usually, a congested transport artery of the city, it had been closed off to any forms of motorised vehicles since 6am and not a single engine could be heard.
Instead as the hours passed, the sound of childrens’ laughter, rapping, cheering, skateboards and cricket balls meeting cricket bats slowly filled the car-free Voortrekker Road and Kruskal Avenue.
For a day, the two streets were turned into a platform for the enjoyment of families from near and far, as people from widely diverse communities came together to play in the streets.
The Cape Cobras believe so much in the value of streets as community assets, that they too joined in the fun and officially launched their season at the event. Although the weather threatened to drench us all, the atmosphere was alive, and at least 2000 people joined in throughout the course of the day.
The GTP extends its gratitude to our partners Open Streets Cape Town, and to the many volunteers, activity organisers and community members that made the day such a brilliant success.
