Although stores like Woolworth’s and Two Guys did indeed sell Xmas packs in the early 70’s, one look at the plastic on this rack pack SCREAMS fake.....certainly if it was a LEGITIMATE RACK with Mantle on the front, what guy in his right mind would open it?
1) Anyone who knows anything about the Christmas packs knows that there's no way a Mantle card shows up, especially on top. 2) Puts what he thinks is a fairly valuable Mantle card in a flimsy plastic sheet for "protection." 3) Promised follow-up video confirming the PSA grading never materialized pretty much confirming a scam. 4) Things that appear too good to be true generally are.
LOL, the comments here kill me. That Mantle might not be a 10, but it's a lot better than a 3 or a 5. That is obviously not a vintage Christmas rack. They did not make them past the early 60's. When you buy something like that, you are buying the cards on top, and that's exactly what this guy did. Certainly for 2021 money if he still has that card 5 years later, then it was not a bad buy at all.
@@ectjim Ha. Did not expect you to respond, I'm talking about you in the 3rd person even. What did it get? I'm doing the '67 set and finally got my Mantle (not as nice as yours...) yesterday. Hence me looking for the card on RU-vid... lol.
i remember i had this card in mint condition back in the days before grading companies existed. i swear that card was minimum PSA 9 with a great chance, like 80% at PSA 10. it was so perfectly centered. corners sharp as a knife. snow white borders. crisp as a card can be. i bought it from a private seller for $50 and sold it to a dealer the next day for $175. this happened back in 1989 i believe. currently PSA 9 is going for $12000. PSA 10 last sold for $68000 in 2013. sheesh.
I just saw this video for the first time and I knew that was called $150 that Jack height would be the second card in that sequence because as a teenager and 68 I pulled them in like that. Obviously by now since this was posted 6 years ago and I wasn't really into RU-vid at that time you probably already know this but you got the era gym for go see card it is a reverse negative. And I don't remember the reverse negative or the proper picture was the rare one to get that was possible to get it both ways.
He never got the memo. They turned a $40 rip off into a $200 rip off. Those were packed in the 80's from old stock. You will NEVER see a star in any of those. This one was obviously tampered with and this poor sap bought it.
Yeah I thought the same thing, why a knife, are u new? I would have died laughing if he slipped and sliced that Mantle card, he almost came close to it, wish he would have cut it, Lol
Yeah those Christmas pack are newer, look at the plastic looks too new. The card was placed on the front on purpose. Hopefully u get what you spent on it
Nice Mantle, if not for the back edge it was great; what did PSA grade it? They grade too harsh, I've seen nice cards with normal wear get a 1 too many times. On the plus side, ok cards may be more affordable and 9 and 10 grades are crazy expensive sometimes.
Definitely. The cellophane used to wrap cards in the 60's & 70's was semi-hard/slightly brittle texture (loud when you rustle it). Not this super-soft modern plastic you see in the video.
this is why I stopped collecting cards years ago, to many scammers out there making fakes, not specifically saying yours are fake but in todays time its very easy to accomplish fraudulent cards
No. Never got it graded. I would like to send it in to SGC. Not sure what I think of PSA right now. But I’m a procrastinator. Been thinking of making some videos. I enjoy watching your and others in the cars community.
ectjim. You mean you didn't want to grade the Mantle b/c of how the comments made you feel like you got had with that "basement" pack. Man...i've bought a whole lot worse in my time. No worries.
