Opening & Cleaning My Mac mini G4 | IMNC

After getting everything set up in the last video, my Mac mini decided to have a hissy fit and get all grumpy. I decided to open it up to see if I could clean and crud out of the internals to make it run a little cooler. Maybe we'll have to go back to the drawing board.

You've installed the fan upside down, do not run the machine like that, as it will over heat.

I know that I have an old version of the smc fan control app that still work works on 10.6 but I'm not sure if it will work on PPC or not. ItsMyNaturalColour , can I send it to you if you think you want it?

It won't work, "smc" is only something Intel macs have. Ppc macs use a different type of fan control

You put the fan wrong. It's flipped now. See the portion of the video when you opened it, and see the end.

Your best bet for stable storage is an mSATA to 44-pin 2,5" IDE adapter and a cheap mSATA SSD

i had the same problem running my powerbook g4 same spec as your mac mini but as soon as i put 10.5 on it the CPU would max out i reverted back to 10.4 and it runs sweet now.

Put Tiger on it. Leopard was always harsh on G4s.

I'd try changing the thermal compound, or the thermal pad depending on what this uses. I know the 2007 intel models use a solid thermal pad, but I've never taken a G4 apart. You could also try oiling the fan bearing, which may help keep the noise down. As for screws, they're readily available online. The G4 is a hot-running CPU as you know from the MDDs, so these Mac Minis will always run hot.

Ashley Cox that's what i was thinking who knows long that stock paste/pads have been there though pads post to last a really long time unless there cheep

Ashley Cox I actually had a Mac Mini G4 with the same 1.25 GHz CPU as Tom's and mine was running extremely cool and quiet, I don't have the Mini anymore and I can't remember the exact temperatures but yeah, it never overheated...

***** I've never had a G4 that ran cool, even after cleaning and fresh compound. I had an eMac with that exact same CPU which got hot, even with an enormous fan behind it. Mine never overheated, though. My intel Mac Mini was always very quiet, cool, and never once gave me any trouble.

I know, G4 is a CPU which gets very hot but I don't know, what was up with my Mini, it simply didn't overheat. Weird...

Tom, I own a maxed out top oft the line mac mini g4. It was always overheating. And it was the stock hard drive. So i replaced it With an IDE SSD and now it works fine.

Hey Tom. I occasionally had this with my PowerBook where the background part of Safari would crash and max out the CPU and ram causing the whole machine to max out the fans and obviously get very hot to the touch. So maybe check the activity monitor and see if there are any programs highlighted in red as this means it has crashed and its what safari would do. Hopefully this helps!

It might be your hard drive that is actually causing the heat, besides the way you put it in your server shelf, since there, it's placed on the bottom. Heat rises, and has to go all the way through your Intel Mac mini, switch and router to lose the spare heat that isn't brought away by the fan. Then, the mini doesn't have enough breathing space in there as far as I can see it. Here's a nice quote from Lowendmac: "To minimize overheating, be sure to allow plenty of air flow around the Mac mini, don’t stack it with a hot hard drive, and consider running it vertically or with a set of feet to raise it above your work surface, which allows air to reach the bottom, the mini’s primary heat radiating surface." ~Remy

ItsMyNaturalColour The cpu problems, are probably related to the oooooooolllllllddd thermal paste from 2005! You should definitely replace the thermal paste!

As always very nice video! Actually it is recommended to use at least 1,5Gb RAM for a 10.5 installation, but it's nice to see how well it runs (except the overhating problems)

The reason it was overheating is because the shroud was broken, it is the piece of plastic which guides the air over the CPU. Without it, the CPU area will get little air flow.

What you can do is remove the DVD drive out of the system so more cold air gets into the computer tho the DVD slot .

I had issues with my Mac Mini G4 as well. It started happening when I opened up my Mini for the first time... It ended up being the wiring from the fan. I guess it has some kind of sensor or something because it started working fine after that.

enjoyed the show was interesting was the cpu running hot as its networking like crazy maybe pop it on a monitor and check again without network attached...

is that g4 mini hooked up to the internet? maybe it caught some malware or something got in to it? cause it really shouldn't be that high of cpu usage on there unless ya got a program running on there that's using the cpu a lot

I was running a mac mini G4 as a server and I was getting the same issues. Intel Minis are better suited for this task than the PPC ones, sadly.

When you took the fan out the sticker was showing, when you put it back it wasnt, dont know if that will afffect anything in the Mini.
