The historic Liverpool-Manchester Railway was the world's first intercity passenger railway, built to connect two of the great industrial hubs of the nation together. It was where the world first heard of George Stephenson and The Rocket, not to mention mechanised transport in general.
But it was an engineering headache to built, involving deep rock cuttings, a huge area of wet bogland, and a valley so wide that it required the invention of the massive Sankey Viaduct.
Opening day was supposed to be a grand affair, involving the Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington, and other dignitaries. However, it was plagued by bad weather, hostile crowds, the world's first train-on-train collision and then the death of a prominent politician.
