Opening Roland G-800 and replacing Floppy with USB Floppy emulator

In this visual tutorial I open the Roland G-800 arranger workstation and replace the floppy drive with a GOTEK SFR1M44-U100K Floppy drive emulator bought from AliExpress.
The Floppy Drive Emulator requires some minor modifications. Originally described here:

In English:
- Pin 1 + 2 on the GOTEK should be connected.
- Three dumpers are required: JA, S1, MO.
The redwire of the flat cable should point to the power connector.
Formatting the USB stick is as easy as power-on the device with both buttons pressed. You are able to copy to the USB stick by selecting the "index" on the emulator. After pulling the USB stick out and loading it in the PC, the selected partition should match.

7 years after you posted this it still made somebody very happy! Got my project G800 ( there was lots wrong with it) finally working with the emulator! Thank you!

I even have a similar video ready for a G1000. Should still upload it. I am happy it could help you too. I think these Roland devices are still good to play on. Obviously under heavy use they wear out, like all electronics do. If you have any tips to service the 'nobs' (rotary encoders under the display) it would be appreciated.

@@skinkie Yes, one of everything Roland has ever made in your personal museum would be nice 🙂. My Encoders are still working fine so I have not looked in to that. Are you looking to replace them or repair/service the existing ones? Do you have the G800 service notes document? According to that, they are the EVQ-WQK F15-24B. I have not found them online or an alternative for them yet.... Or are you talking about the plastic knobs?

@@theflash6595 Although I cannot say I "don't collect" I only own two devices with white and black keys ;-) The last G-1000 was heavily used. This can basically be observed by the buttons (need more pressure) and rotary encoders which (like Nikon camera's) skip steps or only turn in one direction. I just found the G-800 service document, but not the G-1000 yet. To be honest. The design of the G-800, is in my perspective superiour to the G-1000. I really don't get why they put the performance memory on the same row as the tone selection.

Hi All.. I just finished installing the Gotek SFR1M44-U100K in my Roland G-600, following the publisher's instructions exactly, and it is working exactly as it should. The red wire on data cable is facing the power connection... Thank you very much Skinkie!

Hi just wanted to say thanks for the information Video i finally got this emulator to talk to my Roland G800 after a little bit of trail and error I followed the instructions to the letter except the flat cable is facing the correct way around . I suggest that the harness for the unit be modified also to fit correctly under the Keys . There is no need to removed the dials on top and the use of battery powered screw driver is a must ! New life to an old unit .. Thanks again

Hi. I have one for an xp50. I have set the jumpers as per your advice but not done the pin 1 and 2 link. When inserted the synth sees the stick but if I try to format one of the 100 disks, it errors. What is the pin 1 n 2 link for and do I definitely need to do it? Thanks

hi how many wires goes to the plug on the USB floppy emulator also want to put disassembled and in no plume of any leads I would be very grateful for the answer or where to find a diagram to repair this synth

Two, like the original floppy drive. So there is the normal Floppy Disk power, berg connector or mini-molex. www.lifewire.com/floppy-drive-4-pin-power-connector-pinout-2624581 Then we have the normal Floppy Disk flat cable. www.computerhope.com/jargon/f/flopcabl.htm Does this help?

Hi again! thank you so much for this video. I have successfully replaced usb emulator. I have a question..how do you play an external style from the usb disk? I can load a style from usb, but when i tried to play chords, the keyboard didnt play accordingly. It only play drum beat. Could you please help?

Hello Skinkie , Ken you help? I acquired in 2nd hand a ROLAND RA800 module, which I think is equal to your Roland g800, but without a keyboard. It works quite well and with a fantastic sonority according to age. The module did not have a floppy drive. I put one of 1.44 Mgs, of the used ones in the computers but I cannot read or write anything from her. I saw your video about a replacement for the usb floppy emulator and repair on the floppy drive you removed. You can tell me the make and model of the unit. Later I also think of replacing usb floppy emulator but for now I just wanted to put the ROLAND RA-800 systems in with a normal 1.44 floppy drive. Do you have any idea why my unit does not work? It was removed in full operation from a computer so the drive should not be. Maybe need a Twissed flat cable pair? In your images flat cable is not twissed.

I think it might indeed be related to the cable being twisted, or the drive being master / slave.

ok amigo para foncionar g 800 com pendrey 1 ;; pre cisa ter um programa que se chama. FDUSBW7 ketron.. baixe ele pela internt ok 2.. tem que ter um computador com floppy antigo que le disquete 3 pegue todos os disk de ritimos e passe para uma pasta no computador ok ;;quando abri o prog....fdu,,ketron vai abrir trez pastas abra a;; pasta explore;;o programa pede para ler os ritimos do diquet..somente ritimos e nao a pasta ok ok agora pegue um pendrev no minimo 4 gb formate no g 800 depois coloque no compt....se seu floppy de 1000 partisôes cada parti sao um disquet,,,ok ai e so calocar o pendrey no g 800 e e so alegria ele vai ler os ritimos do pendrey ok no meu deu serto ;;;;;

Because the keyboard floppy disk controller requires it. Might be related to master/slave.

Meanwhile I found out what's the reason behind shorting out of pin 1+2: it's that the old floppy drives had shugart interfaces unlike PC drives and the shitty gotek does not properly support that. They hack and cheat and keep selling their shitty product. Better get yourselfs a real hxc floppy emulator. That's like 100eur, but way better.

Dear, can you help me with my roland g800. I buying g800 with USB emulator. I got USB memory with some rhythm but my roland cant loaded them. I formatted USB on the PC but I read on the some forums, that I must formatted USB on the keyboard. Can you text me, procedure for this formatting on the keyboard. Best regards

Hold the two buttons on the Gotek. Then power the G800 on, the USB will be formatted and available to write and read files from it. From the G800 and the PC. If you switch the disk number, you will be again able to add and remove data from that selected disk on both G800 and PC.

I would suggest just to get an old floppy-disk cable from a 386/486 system.

the old floppy was not bought without it all hooked up now can't figure out how to break the USB flash drive 100 images

Trust me, you can't break it :) Make sure that you have the correct pins shortened otherwise it just won't work.

You don't have to. Format your USB stick on the device itself. If I recall correctly it is pressing both buttons. Then you can access the "first floppy" on a normal Mac/Linux/Windows PC.

Yes you can, I can't deal with the menu in the keyboard which buttons to push

So the actual problem is that the keyboard doesn't see that a disk is inserted. Did you bridge the connection as shown in the video? And have the right jumper settings?

Hello! I've just started to self-learned how to play the keyboard. Is there anyway can you please help with step by step on how to change from floppy disk to USB disk emulator on the Roland G800? I've read some of the articles regarding this and they confuse me. Some said the USB disk emulator never worked on the Roland G800. Thanks.

Either buy the G800 compatible (more expensive) one, or solder the connection yourself as in the video.
