Always striving for ways to make guest experience more fun and more interesting, we decided to open the breech on one of our 16" guns. Now, when you take our gun tour (pacificbattleship.com/experie..., you'll be able to see what a 16" breech looks like open and closed.
Hint: it's super cool in both configurations.
Also fun to have retired senior chief Rich Koehnen around to give our team some direction and insider tips. Chief Koehnen spent eight years in the battleship program and is a wonderful wealth of information. (Come see us again soon, Senior Chief!)

Excellent video ! This is the first time I have seen an up to date 16" breech opened. It is great a former Chief was available to instruct the next generation on how to open it. I would venture a guess that the substance covering the inside of the gun barrel is cosmolene.
@BattleshipUSSIowaLosAngeles
We love senior chief. He's a wealth of info and a ton of fun. So lucky to have him. And yes, it's probably cosmolene. Certainly a preservative of some sort.

Of all the ships I think the most likely candidate would be Missouri, perhaps for the 100th anniversary of V-J day. She's in excellent shape, probably the most historically significant ship of the 4 Iowa's, she doesn't have a long trip to get out to see where they can fire the guns without destroying windows and she's been out at sea in 20(10)?, Definitely more recently than the others I think. I seriously doubt they'd ever do it, I don't see the Navy handing over the powder bags for it especially given the Iowa Turret 2 accident, but if it did happen I think that's what they'd do.

@@SRR-5657 The powder would have to be made. I doubt any of the original powder still exists, I imagine it was all disposed of back in the 90s when they were inactivated for the last time. What they were firing in the Iowa turret explosion was like WW2 vintage stuff.

I wonder if in the history of battleships… with large enough calibers… has a man ever escaped a battleship by crawling out the gun barrel. I watched Ryan Sumanski crawl through a 16” BB spare barrel on dry land. I think it took him many many minutes to worm his way through but he did manage it. You would be properly screwed if the guns were pointing directly broadside because you would crawl out of a smoking pipe straight down into the Sea.

Now, how are you going to close it?
@BattleshipUSSIowaLosAngeles
Leaving it open for now so visitors can see one breech closed and one open. To close it will require chain falls.

interesting, but you didn't make clear to them what the 'air' was for, not for firing, but for safety, to give excess air, and a flow path to the outside, just in case raw un-fired powder was left in the barrel, so that any ignition would occur, and be exhausted to the front, away from the inside, and to make this happen BEFORE the gun door was opened, so no fire would burn the crew!!{also in this case to reduce the pressure, so no shock wave would be released upon door opening} ( similar to 1800's cannons, this is a complex replacement of the bore soaking stick, does the same thing!).

Question if they wanted to, could they fire the ammo for the 16" guns today, meaning that why not when they have a ship which is going to be decommissioned and sunk as a artificial reef, then use the large 16" guns to shoot at it, so that the barrels are kept like new and it would be such a massive media event that the whole world would watch it. 🦘🦘👌👌👍👍✌✌
