Behold! It's a Gronk! At long last I take a look at the premium Class 08 offering from Hornby. This particular example being in Serco livery. Enjoy.

They do. If you look on the front, surrounding the vent, you'll see three black dots at the bottom, and one at the top middle, those are the headlamps.

we used to work with these occasionally when i was a shunter in melbourne yard back in the 80/s it was called the F class here...the big difference was the wooden guards that were placed over the wheels...it was thought prudent to have them as a safety precaution.....long time ago! . anyway its a nice model..marty

Those aren't vacuum pipes, BR abandoned the vacuum brake system quite a while ago.But locos such as the class 08. 20, 25, 33, 37, 47 (i could go on) were built at the time of vacuum brakes but where upgraded to air brakes, a version the Westinghouse I guess. The yellow one is Main Reservoir and the red brake pipe. Second and third generation multiple unit trains have no air brake pipe, they use EP (Electro-pneumatic) brakes. But be warned, I could be wrong.

Great to see a review of this, I recently got a Hornby 08 in EWS livery. I won't be DCCing my (small) layout in the foreseeable future, so this locomotive is perfect, it can run incredibly slowly without even stalling on express points, if you get the opportunity you should demonstrate how slow it can run! =)

The Budget Hornby 08 dates back to the 1960's (Triang's model if I recall). It's is a plastic body the fits over a common steam chassis...... Thomas and Duck use this chassis too. The new Hornby 08 is much like the Bachmann miodel, but with more refined deail on the cab windows and the coupling rods As for lights, the 08 has three black lamps above the solebar at the bottom of the wasp ends, and another one centrally just above the windows Most had the middle and to lamps removed from the 80s

She's a gorgeous runner. I've always loved Class 08s & this is one of the best I've seen. Why don't we Americans get model trains of this level of quality? Incidentally, to answer a question from the start of the vid, as I understand it, the Class 08 & Class 09 are basically identical, the only difference being that the 08s were geared for a top speed of 15 mph while the 09s could make 23 mph.

I had a Hornby 08 many, many years ago, it was like the budget version (in green but without the waspies!). It had a weight on a lever inside connected to the rear coupling so you could uncouple by giving it a small jerk with the controller. Was a bit hit and miss! Wondering if they still have that?

yes if you already have a good model of it by Bachmann there's no real need to get a Hornby one too. But I'm IC82, I have to EVERYTHING! lol

Nice vid on a nice model, those cute little shunters also ran here in the Netherlands, I thaugt there were the class 600's, also a branchline variant (higher speed and continious braking system) ran here, one of them is prereserved at the MBS (Museum Buurt Spoorweg) just close from here, thanks for the video!

There is lights but you have to take the cover off and then take out the motor and look inside it

I have the class 09 in civil engineers grey and like the 08's, be careful taking off the body! The little pipe going from the body to the bogie is very fragile but it does come out eventually. Just thought I'd warn anyone thinking of buying one or DCC-ing their current one... :)

I can't comment on switching locomotives (ask streamlinedtrains) but I can tell you that Serco are a huge engineering and servicing company.

may i just point out, the 08 were restricted to 15mph. but the 09s, nicknamed super gronks were restricted to about 20mph i think. i love that loco, i am tempted to get it but she is in the wrong livery. i am modelling the 50s, early 60s. so that is well out!! oh well, i think i can have one exception!!!

If you get a Bachmann class 350, you could maybe get 2, so you could do double heading like they do in real life. I did it with two Northern Rail class 142s and the effect is really nice! :-)

Nice loco i saw it in the model shop and was tempted by it (a rare thing as i always plan what I want to buy when I go) but I was slightly put off by the price although now I know all those details i may reconsider

i think they use lamps for the lights. i like the sign on the wall. you should get the bachmen class 70 it is ace.

lol I did not pay the price on the sticker - it's possible to get one of these brand new for as little as £60 (about the same as a Bachmann one)

have you ever considered getting one of the Beyer Garratt locomotives.They were LMS. I saw Hattons advertising them for a pretty penny a while back I seem to have an interest in the unusual locomotives, such as the 2-8-2 P2 (Cock o' the North), i dont know if anyone does a model at the moment though

you should try a Class 08 strength test using the Hornby basic, Bachmann and Hornby Premium model see what is stronger

Gronk is the tight end for our New England Patriots! Over here, Bachmann has 2 lines of trains in HO scale. either top of the line or budget. Seems to me that Hornby does the same thing. Is it easier to put sound in the 08 from Hornby or Bachmann? Does the Bachmann one have lights? How does the Bachmann gearing compare? And I've owned a Kia. It was a great little car. And, mind the gap!
