In this episode, Patrick and Stuart continue the renovation and restoration in the Petit Salon of the Chateau de Colombe. Patrick prepares for the paint and wallpaper with plastering repairs and sanding. With the wall sizing completed, he shows how they use lining paper on the walls to create a smoother surface and for stain blocking before applying the final paint and wallpaper. Patrick and Stuart also open a hidden door in the alcove that was uncovered when the 20th century wallpaper was removed.

Patrick the plasterer, plâtrier . Well done you what a nightmare filling and levelling. My pet hate. You did a wonderful job and the lining paper looks excellent. In UK it is hung horizontally so joins don’t clash when you wallpaper. We had one chap who didn’t paste to the edges, ripped the loose pieces and then filled the gap. Seamless. Love how you research and tell us all. Love every nanosecond👏👏❤❤👌👌👌

I LOVE the hidden door idea. I plan to incorporate one into my garage-o-minium which will open up to the narrow utility room under the stairs. The item that will hide the doorway will be a 7' bookshelf on rollers with a heavy trim along the bottom to hide the wheels. I have always been intrigued by hidden doorways, and yours is the oldest that I have seen. Thank you for sharing your treasure with us. It is inspirational.

A hidden door? How fascinating. A relative of mine found a hidden door in their 19th century house and found a room that had been sealed up for decades. Wasn't even mentioned on the floor plans. Turned out to be a nursey, which had been sealed up after the child passed away. I remember using lining paper back in the 1980s when I was apprenticed to my dad, who was a painter and decorator (I later trained as a doctor haha). It's easier and saves so much time than replastering.

Patrick and Stewart, my Mother told me once a story about some curtains that my father hung in the living room to take a nap. I dont understand why, since his bedroom was near. He was born in 1910 or 12. I am the youngest daughter in a family of 6 children and I am 60 looking a bit younger😂. Where did he learn about those curtains and the space for the nap in a living room? . The funny thing is that one of my cousins that recently died being very old, used to come to visit my parents and woke up my father opening the curtains and saying. First Act Nilo sleeping, then He would close them and open again.. Second Act Nilo sleeping again.. And he would disturb his nap many times doing that to get him up. 😂😂😂😂😂😂.

Stuart, you need to turn that into a safe space for Patrick after a day's worth of plastering! Don't forget a bottle or two of his favorite libation. Dear Patrick and Stuart, the hidden door was called a modesty door when in the bedroom alcoves, I believe. Now, you need to find the door that leads to the pot of gold!!! I’ve seen people use lining paper and agree it is a great option when repairing the plaster is too much. It certainly looks smooth and probably holds together any crumbing plaster. The petite salon is going to look so good. Do you think people slept behind the curtain or listened to secrets being whispered in the room? Oh if only walls could talk.😊. Many hugs ❤

I don't blame you for wanting to cut the amount of work in that room make it easier for yourselves. You have a lot of projects to do :) I would have done the same with the door I like the napping area curtain ;) and a 2 piece WC would be easier with a lovely chaise longue outside of it if not storage of some sort or bar as some suggested. The green wallpaper will give it more charm :)

Hi darling Stuart and Patrick , thanks for another interesting vlog. It must be a great feeling to uncover something new when you are renovating a room. I like the explanation about the pecking order of how important the guests were by which room that they put in. The lining paper we use over here is slightly thicker than the one you used and it does cover a multitude of lumps bumps etc . You did a great job on the walls Patrick, the prep work is the most important job of all and by the way may I say that you have a fine pair of legs darling.😄😂 Lots of love and hugs to you both. 🥰🥰🇨🇮

ooops, pushed wrong button. Patrick, the face you made at around 55-56 talking about “Plastering,” is ADORABLE!

Yes. Partially just for storage, but we will have it set up for open day tours so people can see the way it was originally used.

There is so much to say about both of you! The videos are always great and the music the best. You really are the kings of restoration. I think that if that was my home I would agree with everything you both have done in each project. The furniture, paint color, wall paper...everything. And I am picky. Looking forward to the next video. Hugs and love from SoCal. ❤

🇨🇦Well that was a surprise! I was looking at the alcove thinking how pretty it was and wondering where the door was because there was no smidgen of a sign of it!! Clever. I love the oval window in that little room with shelving.

Thank you Sonia. Isn’t that amazing. Our goal is to restore it, so the door in not visible again. 😊. Huge hugs and thank you from Colombe ❤❤❤

question. Only somewhat familiar with Victorian style homes in the U.S. The outer walls of your Chateau, are they wood or stone? or do you have wood bracing so you can install wood panels,..etc. The real question is why not take all the paster out and replace it with modern gyp sin board?
@JourneytotheChateau
@JourneytotheChateau 2 месяца назад
All outer walls are solid limestone. It is a stone that needs circulation and the ability to breathe. We are conserving the historical accuracy of the chateau which is using plaster walls. Modern gypsum board walls are not used in 17th and 18th century construction. Thanks!

What a transformation already Stuart and Patrick! ❤❤❤ Will you use the area with the hidden door for storage for the breakfast room in the Petit Salon?
@JourneytotheChateau
@JourneytotheChateau 3 месяца назад
Yes, we will put some of the shelves back in and have some storage. But we will also keep the space open for when we have tours so that visitors can see its original purpose. ❤️

Love those hidden doors, but most led to a chamber pot lol 😅 .. yes, you can only plaster so much unless you're an expert, nearly Patrick 😂

I kept thinking as you were working on the walls, that this room looked like a bedroom with en-suite bath/powder room. Especially with the alcove and the hidden door to the powder room. What an interesting historical find and explanation of what the purpose actually was. I love and admire your restoration of this little jewel in your chateau. The petit salon is going to be just beautiful with the wallpaper! Onward and upward! See you Friday! ✌🏼
