Of all the great things about this film, the soundtrack has to be rated highly. From this lyrical, almost erotic opening, through the doom-laden hum of 'When Johnny comes Marching Home', to the climactic sequence of mushroom clouds accompanied by Vera Lynn's cut-glass rendition of 'We'll Meet Again', it is absolutely perfect. Thanks for posting.
A sad bit of trivia: The original planned release date for Dr. Strangelove was November 22, 1963. Because of the assassination of President Kennedy it was postponed until January 29, 1964. Also, Slim Pickens' line "Shoot, a fellow could have a pretty good weekend in Dallas . . . " was re-dubbed with "Vegas" substituted for "Dallas".
In the opening to the version I first saw, there was scrolling text at the beginning, informing 60s audiences that none of the characters are based on real people, and that the Doomsday device wasn't actually being developed.
I love this film so much, it's one of my all-time favourite comedies/black comedies alongside Tom & Jerry, Laurel & Hardy, Johnny English, Mr Bean and so much more. Peter Sellers is amazing in this film in 3 roles: Captain Mandrake, The President and Dr. Strangelove himself alongside George C. Scott in his amazing performance as General Turgidson. And I love this opening of the film with the 2 B-52 Planes in the sky and I love the song Little Tenderness, its a masterpiece of a Black Comedy about Nuclear War and how ever since there are Nuclear weapons all round the world in different countries which is so Scary and terrifying to think about. I always wish that we were in a world where's no nuclear weapons at all, but unfortunately its just imagination only.
And those planes are still in use today as the US’ frontline bomber in the year 2018! Who would have thought! Lol 1950’s were technologically punching way above their weight!!
The airframes are still in use. The interiors and all flight circuitry, communications, and electronics have been gutted and replaced at least four times.
+Richard O'Brien Oh I get it! It's "Base", because the movie has an Air Force Base! It's brilliant! Haha! (crickets) ...I'll show myself out the door now.
One of the common issues I run into with B&W LaserDiscs is colour burst on the screen. This one doesn’t seem to have any. It was mastered well. Then again, it’s a Criterion disc, so that should be expected.
It's try a little tenderness well atleast an instrumental variation of it. Still haven't figured out which band or orchestra plays this exact version though.
I never really laughed when watching this (i know, i know you who is reading this, i hate myself just as much as the other guy) but it's certainly a very entertaining movie and Peter Sellers as Dr Strangelove is funny so i did laugh, but i hope more watches brings on the tears (laughter i mean) ;)
