Check out today's sponsor, Surfshark! surfshark.com/t... . Use code TIFFANY for 83% off a two-year plan (pay only $1.99/month!) /// today I'm discussing my income and my DEBT. I am SCARED to post this but I hope it's helpful in some way.
#debtpayoff #studentloans #debt
I am opening up a conversation about student loans and credit card debt. Especially as a young person, we don't often have transparency with our peers, which makes it really hard to learn about personal finance and responsible money habits. Also it's so stressful to be in debt and think you're alone! This is the beginning of my budgeting / debt payoff journey, so I hope you guys are interesting in following along as I try to pay off my debt as quickly as possible!
I also discussed a bit about my income, especially since becoming a full-time RU-vidr.

@thepurplepalace85
@thepurplepalace85 5 лет назад
Nina S while there certainly exist cases of creators abusing their platform, I think it is unfair to say that the majority of sponsors are irrelevant. I would argue that it is quite the opposite, actually: the majority of youtubers are conscious of what a privilege it is to have an audience and are thus highly sensitive to whether a potential sponsor would be a fit for their subscribers/channel. Anyone who is a RU-vidr can tell you that the amount of work put in hardly ever equates to the money earned, so be happy that the person whose content you’re consuming (whether you’re watching it ‘out of boredom’ or not), is able to receive a little compensation for their hard work. Finally if an ad doesn’t interest you, simply skip over it 😉

I am in my first year of college and I decided to go to an out of state school, which I now regret. I wanted to get out of my state and start over, but I realized that paying close to $60,000 a year is not worth "starting over" somewhere new. I wish I stuck with a state school, and even if I do transfer the loans that I have acquired in just one year of out of state schooling is insane.
@marshclem2255
@marshclem2255 4 года назад
I agree, so many kids in high school think going to an out of state school is a good idea, but financially it’s incredibly irresponsible. I’m applying to veterinary school next year, and there’s only one vet school in my state (which is the same school I’m going my undergraduate). If I don’t get in to this school, I’m going to take a gap year and reapply instead of giving myself the chance to go out of state. If I get denied twice, I’ll go somewhere else because I can’t wait forever, but I refuse to take on that much debt if I can avoid it. There’s always a chance you could transfer to a state school and save some money instead of staying at your current school.

fluorescent adolescent: why would you want to experiment classes to know what you want? That would be the worst expensive mistake you will ever make. How about you shadow in jobs that you think you might be interested in for two years. After that, you will have a clear idea of what you want and you wont have spent any money to figure it out. Actually you would have been paid to understand the path you want. And after schooling, you will have experiences to list on job applications. A win win for you. Don’t ask school advisor for what to do. They are paid to help make colleges profitable. They are there for the interest of the institution not yours.

TIFFANY, bless you for making this. I’m at $24K in student loans with more coming as I’m going back this fall and $6K in credit card debt, which I would call half stupid early 20s bullshit and half I will starve if I don’t eat and I need to buy gas to get to my jobs and I just paid my rent situations. My boyfriend and I are tackling my credit card debt all together as he has a financially supportive family that helped him out with his, it took a lot for me to swallow my pride and let him help now that we’re both working full time but I’m so relieved. I’ve been trying for 2 years to get a hold on them but I’ve been the bread winner during that time too and had to make some hard choices to keep us afloat. This country is fucking rough man, I tell you what. But you’re so right in that we NEED NEED NEED to be talking about this transparently. While partially circumstantial, our choices also impact our debt and that’s valuable to reflect on.

Hearing this makes me so sad. Where I live school is free, uni is very affordable, if you cant afford it there‘s government help you can apply for (which you do not have to pay back) and getting credit cards for young people is very uncommon and student jobs pay a livable wage. America seriously needs to get their shit together, having a whole generation in massive debt is honestly horrible and should not be the case in any developped country!

I had the first three years of my undergrad paid for through scholarships, so I only had to take out loans my last year and for housing-and then I went to law school on a full-tuition scholarship, so again only taking out loans for housing-and I’m still going to graduate from law school with $80-90k in loans. and before anyone comes to me-I went to a state school for my undergrad, and law school is expensive, regardless of where you go.

Good on you for opening up about money! I find it very hard to speak about money- even now as a 30 year old. I was in terrible debt in university and for a few years afterwards between my HECS debt (which is debt given to you by the Australia government to cover university costs and you pay back once you get over a certain income) credit cards and car loan, I was drowning. Trying to live in Sydney- the most expensive city in the world is bloody tough! When I met my husband, he was in a fantastic financial position, he had been sensible with his money, bought property and had a huge amount of savings. It took me a really long time to open up to him about the amount of debt I was in. When we married- he wiped my debt clean which allowed us to buy 2 properties. We still use credit cards, we put EVERYTHING on them, but we pay it off each month in full then use the points to fly when we go on holidays. I have even had the luxury of stopping work to go back to school to study again. The funny thing is with all of that, I still struggle to speak about money and often still find myself ashamed of speaking about the budget. We really need to teach how to handle money in schools because no one taught me- if it wasn’t for my husband, honestly, I would be stuffed financially.

Thank you for being so open! I'm from Canada, where most public universities are heavily subsidized by our government (which I am very grateful for). Recently though, our provincial government has been trying to cut back on loans and grants for low income students. I come from a low income household but am very lucky to have money saved for tuition. I do not have financial troubles but I really do see how loans it can effect people who need it most. Seeing students on the news discuss what it is like to be disabled or from single income households, that may now need to rely on loans to get through school breaks my heart. Especially as I see what a terrible effect it has on students in the US. You are not alone, and I am very happy to see the progress you have made. I love your videos and I wish you the best :)

I find the entire country’s mentality towards student debt mind boggling, we all realize that it’s messed up but still expect everyone to go through it. By the time I’m done with college I will have around the same amount in loans as you, I’m currently half way through my degree and the amount is also accounting for grad school after, but it still makes me uneasy. The fact that we *need* these degrees to start off our lives feels so constructive but then again what can we do? It gets especially hard when you realize that we will go from owing money in student loans to then owing money for a house loan and will basically stay in debt until our 40’s.

Here in india, I'm doing a professional course and I have a govt seat which means I pay about 70,000₹ p.a (~1000$) for 5 years. Valeria Vagapova Many people in the US are terrified of higher taxes and are willing to stay in this cycle of debt to avoid ~socialism~.
@lexismith8325
@lexismith8325 5 лет назад
Valeria Vagapova also, higher education is a huge business. Many people make a lot of money.
@lexismith8325
@lexismith8325 5 лет назад
Valeria Vagapova it’s definitely a thing! My parents are pretty conservative and they think this way. Whenever I bring up single-payer healthcare they start talking about how they don’t want to pay 50% of their income in taxes “like France does” (we lived in France briefly where their taxes were higher), or how they don’t want to wait 6 months for a hip replacement “like in Canada” but my parents and many others do not seem to understand the big picture. Many, many people in the US hate any sort of big government and that thinking unfortunately trickles to social welfare programs. Also, the US k-12 education is taxpayer funded, but we have issues with both federal and some state government severely slashing funding. If we can’t figure that level of education out, we can’t figure higher education out.
@lexismith8325
@lexismith8325 5 лет назад
Valeria Vagapova Also, because the US has 50 states, state’s rights vs federal government is a HUGE thing in American history. The civil war was basically about that (and slavery). That’s why liberal vs conservative states have wildly different laws. Something like a massive healthcare reform would piss a lot of states off and that fight would escalate through the court systems. Another thing that America differs in vs other countries is size and amount of people. Implementing something like single-payer healthcare is a massive, massive job that affects hundreds of millions of people- many of whom are against anything that would rise their taxes. I don’t think a change that large will ever happen- the US needs to tackle things like tort reform, patent laws, and other components to change the healthcare system. Same with student debt.

Valeria Vagapova A good example of a fight between federal rulings vs states right is marriage equality. From Wikipedia: “Between January 2012 and February 2014, plaintiffs in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee filed federal district court cases that culminated in Obergefell v. Hodges. After all district courts ruled for the plaintiffs, the rulings were appealed to the Sixth Circuit. In November 2014, following a lengthy series of appeals court rulings that year from the Fourth, Seventh, Ninth, and Tenth Circuits that state-level bans on same-sex marriage were unconstitutional, the Sixth Circuit ruled that it was bound by Baker v. Nelson and found such bans to be constitutional. This created a split between circuits and led to an almost inevitable Supreme Court review.” The SC ruled in favor Obergefell, and marriage equality was legal in all 50 states. That was a massive, lengthy fight... and that was just for marriage equality.

If you get a master's or a PhD, then that's when the reality of debt really hits. I have a master's in education and I want to pursue a doctoral degree, but the debt scares me. It is so sad that student debt is the reason why people cannot reach their full potential and be contributing members of society. You actually have a very manageable amount (compared to what I have seen working in higher education). If you are planning in working in public service, then you can enroll in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. As an academic advisor at a public institution, I am in that program and it makes my payments so manageable and there's actually an end point when the rest gets forgiven, it is a big relief.

You only make payments if you earn over a certain amount (and it's a small percentage) and it gets written off in 30 years. I'm Canadian and we have crazy debt here too. Probably not as much as the US though. I made the decision to study abroad in New Zealand and take out an extra $15,000 bank loan in addition to my 10,000 a year provincial loan. But funny enough, I discovered after graduating that my provincial student loan (which is often recommended by high school counsellors) has an almost 7% (floating) interest rate compared to the 4.5% I have for my bank loan. How crazy is it that a loan from the government of Canada that is marketed specifically towards students can be so predatory while also being the norm. They should really inform students more about what they are getting into. I don't think you're an idiot for the amount of debt you have. It's actually not bad (or maybe I am an idiot too) haha

This is honestly terrifying. I go to uni in Germany and am currently doing my Master's. I have no debt and am able to put at least $100-200 towards my savings each month thanks to my job as a working student in a somewhat small company. My flatmate qualifies for something called BAföG which is similar to a student loan but is distributed directly by the state of Germany (the ministry of education) instead of student loan companies. You can get financial support of up to about $800 a month and only have to pay back HALF of it (and only up to 10.000€, doesn't matter if the sum of what you received during the duration of your studies is more than that). Also, you only have to start paying it back 5 years after graduating in hopes of you having found a well-paying job by then. So the state literally gifts you money since you only have to pay back half of what you received, there is no interest (except in special cases) and you have some time to figure shit out before you have to worry about paying it back. I also heard that it's even better in some Scandinavian countries (don't know the specifics) This is how it should be everywhere and I am so sorry that the US holds this sword of Damocles over your head when all you should be worried about are deadlines and exams. Higher education should not be a business but a basic human right. A lot of my fellow students in my degree program are from the US and while they all came to Germany for various reasons, the financial burden of attending university in North America is one of them. Thanks for sharing and contributing to making following generations aware of what it means to accumulate and pay back debts, Tiffany! This was such an informative video and I'm sure it's going to help loads of people!

I mean, it not like you are getting money for free lmao. You are paying it through your taxes. American colleges are exensive because of things like financial aid and gov backed debt. If colleges know the gov will give students money no matter what, they can spend money to "improve" their campuses and afford to raise the wages of the facility, which causes tuition to rise. America would be one of the cheapest nation's to get a degree if we got rid of gov subsidies, but this would mean getting rid of luxuries like campus gyms, which most people aren't willing to give up.

I seriously can't wrap my head around the fact that most people need to get in serious debt to acquire a 'basic' degree. It's so wrong that purely based on in what family you are born decides the chances of getting a comfortable life. It's so unfair, I mean the poor can't break their vicious circle unless they are very gifted and strong enough to pursue jobs next to their education. While dumb rich people can easily get a degree. Average poor people and average rich people should have equal opportunities. As a country, you cannot really call yourself a "free country" when your class determines your future so much. I agree that one should work hard to earn a degree, but that can be purely academic, it shouldn't be working multiple jobs and starting off your life with huge piles of debt or even not studying because you cannot afford it. It often seems that Americans see "working hard" as the way you need to do it, but that's putting quite some pressure on the shoulders of people who haven't even started their lives yet. Having to work multiple jobs and putting your mental and physical health at risk because of it is shouldn't be normalized. Everyone deserves an education without seriously struggling for it, it's the only way for a society to develop and be proud. I first studied in Belgium, and as a child of parents who are middle-class, I had to pay 900 euros a year, (Children from parents who are financially not in a good place often have to pay only half or even less). I study in the Netherlands now and It has doubled, but It's still doable and I won't be starting my life with debt, which I'm quite grateful for. I'll happily pay taxes with money I earned from a job I got with my degree, so everyone gets the chance to do it that way. You're very brave for opening up about this, I'm sure this will help a lot of people and make people who aren't that empathetic reason a bit more.

Blackbird vb Just because Americans go into debt to get degrees does not mean they NEED to. There are other options, such as waiting a year and working full time and saving all that money for college, and then working part time in college (this would pay for a couple years of community college and then a state school); I live in California and cost of living is high and I could have managed this by crunching the numbers. However I did live with my parents and commute 1.5 hours to school so I know I had the advantage of living with my parents.

As someone who started college at 17 I can say I didn't fully understand what I was getting myself into. Like you said, sure they try to explain it, but it's difficult for someone at that age to really comprehend the amount of money they'll end up owing. It's better to examine your income and see where you can save, or prioritize how much you throw at your debt. Paying off debt aggressively=cutting costs everywhere else (think beans and rice). Valeria Vagapova well by 22, which would ideally be the age of graduation. A lot of people get jobs starting in high school, part time during school semesters and a lot more hrs during the summer. This goes for college too. I’m a full time college student with 17 credits but make approx $2,000 or above per school year with just a work study job working a measly 10 hrs a week. Multiply that by 4 yrs and that’s already$8,000. This is excluding the likely 2 yrs from high school a lot of teenagers typically work. And excluding the four summers in those 4 years in which you can earn thousands more I’m limited by transportation issues, being a collegiate athlete, and taking 17 credits per semester etc I can only get jobs on campus and work 10 hrs at $9 minimum wage. but for others as a full time student and part time worker, over the course of a 4 yr run in college (age 22) $10,000 is not that hard at all. Never said they’d be debt free tho🤷🏾‍♀️ I said having $10,000 saved up isn’t that unreasonable at all. Especially if moderately good decisions are made and approx 6 yrs of work.

First of all, thank you for being so open about an issue that seems to affect so many people. I hope it all works out for you. I believe someone mentioned this on a previous video but as a German the whole credit card debt really blows my mind. It seems to be quite a normal thing in the US? In Germany, most people don't even own a credit cards and generally people just don't spend money they don't have. Of course, there's exceptions like taking loans for buying a house etc. As for the student loans I think most people know that we don't have tuition fees so that's not a problem and if you need money for basic expenses there are many options with government support as the easiest. Not to go into detail but basically you have to pay back half of what you were given with a max. of 10K. But even that payment depends on your income etc

@@tiffanyferg Wait, what? This automatically sets people up for failure. Actually, everybody! I smell another bubble. I am from Germany, too and had no idea about this. I started to think about possibly moving to the US at some point but with that in mind, I really have got to question if that even makes sense. How is something like acquiring debt even encouraged? In Germany, people panic if their debit card is overdrawn with, idk, 500 Euros, lol.

I'm shocked about the whole credit card loan too. It's not common to have a credit card or a credit card loan in Finland. It just baffles me and makes me happy I don't have to worry about stuff like that.
@lexismith8325
@lexismith8325 5 лет назад
Deniz Ece It’s not really that acquiring debt is encouraged (although that’s what happens for many people), it’s that credit scores are used to prove that you are able to pay back loans/borrowed money.
@valeriavagapova
@valeriavagapova 5 лет назад
@@diidada Yeah, same thing with credit cards in Russia too. From what I have seen only wealthy/well-established people get credit cards at all (most people use debit) and even if they get into a bit of debt they repay it within a month or so. It's absolutely not normal to have any debt (apart from mortrage for apartments/cars).

I don't have credit card debt (I use it and pay it off every month), but I've a little under 25k in student loan debt (finished my MPA recently). It is terrifying. Plus I'm still stuck at a part-time job and can't seem to find full-time work. It is very frustrating. I do agree that it does seem that most people don't know what they are doing when they take these large loans. It is unrealistic to expect 18 year olds to be able to really understand those loans. Especially with our education system.
@elisecccccccc
@elisecccccccc 5 лет назад
Side note, don’t know if you will see this, but maybe someone will. You can claim interest that you pay on your loans (up to a maximum amount) on your taxes and get it refunded to you! That refund could potentially go right back into your debt if you wanted. I ended up having car stuff I needed to pay for this year with my federal refund, but that’s what I normally do with it!
