I gave OMV a try but use containers extensively. The way OMV decided to remove Portainer and insist on their own complex UI, was a real put off. That’s the kind of approach I see from pfsense and Freenas, where community preferences are ignored and things are decided regardless.
@GustavoBhr

I’m a OMV user for at least a decade and trust me: the compose interface is not complicated. Actually is quite simple to create a new container from a docker composer file after the initial setup has been made. There’s an excellent tutorial in omv-extras wiki. Just follow it and you’re ready to enjoy everything in one interface only. It’s not resource hungry and everything works great and stable. I was insisted on portainer for a long time. When finally gave up and decided to face the learning curve, my only regret was not doing this early. CasaOS for me it’s way too basic. However I really enjoy the interface, where omv lacks the most of.

You can still very easily add Docker and Portainer into OMV using an SSH terminal window. I agree that it was a silly move for OMV developers to remove the WebUI installation.

Don’t even compare it to truenas or pfsense. Their main target is enterprise, they couldn’t care less about community for the most part. Just be thankful they’re free.. for now !

The thing is community preferences are only that, if the Devs aren't getting more support other than 'hearing' preferences then they will follow the route they'd like it to go. It was easier than the many customisations that were unfunded and by the minimal Devs putting up their hand unfounded too.

Don't see how this is a fair comparison, OMV is a NAS that is what its built to do, CasaOS is built for people who want a easy front end for Docker to run containers with a one click install, yes it can share files but its not its primary goal in life. you'd be better off comparing CasaOS to TrueNAS as TrueNAS comes with an appstore built in to run containers.
@EmilePolka

CasaOS is fine if your fine without any kind drive resiliency and fine only able to use the file transfer via a browser. It still lacks what a basic NAS can do, for starters there is no SMB (Windows File Sharing) support, sure you can install it via terminal but OMV cam set that up with a few clicks.

Hi Techno dad, I would appreciate your advice. I am looking for a best OS for dockers and virtual machines. I like CasaOS. But can it also manage the virtual machines? Or could Debian hosting CasaOS carry also something else for the virtual machines paralely?? I like your videos. Lots of interesting topics. Thanks👍

I'm been using OMV for my server needs for years but I avoid using docker because of the complexity.I install directly on Debian. I just tried casaos and love the simplicity of the app installs. I see in the comments that installing casaos on top of OMV works. Thats my next project.

Unless I'm missing something, sharing folders with casaos makes them public without restrictions. No control over this currently. I don't recommend using this feature. It's a nice front-end for docker containers though.

Why choose, when you can use both? I have CasaOS installed on top of OMV. OMV is built on top of Debian so CasaOS installs without issue. All I did was switch OMV to port 8080 first to avoid conflicts and create shares in OMV for the CasaOS/Docker images if required. The two of them together is honestly the best solution for all my home server needs.

Yeah but... someone who is seeking to build a home server might be put off using OMV after watching. Yes there is a learning curve but OMV is a solid low cost open source solution that shouldn't be overlooked. In my case the updated Compose feature has completely eliminated any need for another 3rd party manager like Portainer, meaning one less thing to go wrong. To me CasaOS is not a real replacement for OMV and is actually more like Portainer or Yacht.

Great quality video as usual. As others have said in the comments the 'openness' of the CasaOS and the file system keeps me away from it right now. You touched on it a little around the 10:50 mark. I need the ability to lock down files based on particular users/groups, so OMV is still the recommendation from my perspective - but we all have different needs. I hadn't heard of CasaOS before this, so thank you for putting this out there! It's great to see comparisons and options presented.

Just wondering, I tried for 3 days on 3 different computer to install OMV6 onto another USB stick and only had it 1 time booting but not into the web UI. Is that still a thing or is it just not possible anymore to install OMV6 onto a USB stick to run? Also, is there an easy way to install CasaOS parallel with OMV?
@TechnoDadLife

I think you can still install OMV on a stick. I am thinking of doing a video of that for CasaOS. You can install CasaOS on top of OMV, but that seems redundant.
@dzmelinux7769

@@TechnoDadLife Would be a good video, because something is terrible wrong with OMV 6 to USB installation and CasaOS with OMV6 would still be interesting for the lazy try outs of sockets. I usual use portainer but I would also try CasaOS quick installs and if they work as intended I would keep them running.

One if the things that so far put me away form casaos is that all its containers are instalked in the same os drive. Only after deplying i can edit and change yhe storage logation of the containers. I would need either the possibility to set path before deploying or have the possibility to add a default location. So far could not find the way

Yes, you can change the path, but you have to start the container once first.

Can I ask a question? I have an OMV installation on a big Raid volume 17TB and don't know how safe is it to upgrade the OMV version because they always mention to "have a backup" and I cannot backup 17TB just in case.. What is your experience with this?
@MrBl0wfish
@MrBl0wfish 8 месяцев назад
depends. if the raid is set up in SW (some omv plugin, or other debian package) you MIGHT run into issues. if it is HW raid, or ZFS you SHOULD be fine. as allways depends on the config, but in general an os upgrade should not affect storage, if the new OS can also read however you set that storage up.
