OpenOffice Tutorial: How to Create a Table of Contents 

That was awesome! Just what I needed. As a full-time freelance writer, copywriter, ghostwriter, I am not usually asked to format anything. I just hand over the copy. But recently I was asked to format an eBook I wrote for a client and this tutorial was invaluable! Ongytenes, you saved me hours of work my friend! Thank you so much, good thoughts headed your way.

Spent three days trolling and threading on open office forums where I got the normal 45 step instructions with three main components left out and comments about how if I couldn't figure this out on my own I should buy MS word. I knew it had to be easier than all that and you proved it.

Yes. Advance the tutorial to 3:28 and pause it. Then look for the button with the # on it. All you have to do is click on the button and press your Delete key on your keyboard.

Right Click on your TOC Select "Edit Index/Table". When "Insert Index/Table" Opens, then select the "Index/Table" tab. Uncheck "Protected Against Manual Changes" Then you can edit and make changes to your TOC. Note if you click Update you will to redo your changes.

I found your tutorial to be both clear and simple. As you may know, however, an eBook, and especially so for the Kindle, has some additional formatting requirements, such as A5 page size, etc. Would you consider developing a tutorial such as this on how to turn an Open Office/Libre Office document into an eBook? OpenOffice was inherited by Oracle when they obtained Sun MIcrosystems and it's development was in question. But since then, they have turned it over to Apache a NPO open source software developer. Hopefully now that OpenOffice is in Apache's control, maybe they will develop this plugin more.

@dHeYzMaKu You can save your document as an OpenOffice file if you think you may edit it later. If you do, you can then export it as a PDF again. There is a plug in available for OpenOffice to import a PDF. How well it works I am not sure since I have never used it. I believe it is in the Beta experimental state. There are software that can edit PDFs. One other thing that may be a problem in importing a PDF is whether or not it is password protected.

I am having problems getting an HTML Table of Contents for my Kindle book. Tried using KIndle Create to get the automatic HTML TOC which worked, but when the Kindle book was published it just used the TOC that I had used when I published the paperback version of the book (which has page numbers on it). I have inserted a photo in the KIndle Create version of my E book which is what may be causing the problem. I wanted the photo in the space beneath the TOC which works fine with the paperback version but Kindle Create will not accept a photo in space below the HTML TOC. So I moved the photo into the body of text. Maybe this is what is causing the problem. The previous version of my Kindle book worked fine with the HTML TOC but I didn't have a photo in that version. It was all text.

Ive tried this over and over and it just doesnt work. I used the headers, but when I do this it just says "table of contents" and thats it -- no chapters or anything. I have no idea what I did wrong because I followed all the steps the same way....

This is super helpful. However, once I create the table of contents, it will not allow me to edit the text font or size. Am I missing something in the process? Anyone got any ideas?

Is it possible to remove the page numbers from TOC?

This did not work and it I followed you step by step. How do I create my header first? Do I type up a title and then select from the header drop down menu? cause that is what I did. I chose header 1. then followed your steps in the insert menu and only the title of table of contents came up, not my titles in my book.
