OpenTX Throttle Curves: Making your Quadcopter easier to hover

This isn't new by any means, us heli pilots have been using throttle curves to help fine tune hovering for over a decade but if you've never used one - this should help!

YES YES YES A very important tip thank you,my little whoop feels 100 pounds lighter I can acually concentrate on different things besides keeping it in a hover. I got a little 2s whoop to learn how to use betaflight with and my qx7 with out it chewing my face off and this is the stuff I am looking for. Thanks a million.

Just what I needed! I'm new to FPV and just got a Tinyhawk II, and when I fly indoors it is either stuck to the ceiling, or on the floor. *lol* Thank you. Now if I can only get it to connect to my computer/BetaFlight. Nothing happens when I plug it into the USB port. I'm hoping it's the USB cables I have, as I see some people have problems with certain cables and all the cables I have are exactly the same.

Hi thnx for the lesson/info, when I've put my togother, will try it out. I do have a question thou, on your throttle screen at the far right jitters between -0.1 & -0.0. Is that normal? How to fix it? I noticed when I calibrated the sticks from behind (have the X-Lite Pro) this accours also as I calibrated the sticks on my old X9D plus the values started jittering. I thought it my have an effect on on flight of the drone, being insecure, unsafe & inaccurate. Many thnx, take care & best wishes 2020!

I’ve reduced the throttle weight on a model I have, to make the quad more gentle to use indoors. What’s the difference of doing this instead of using curves?

would you make the smallest fixed wing you can that can go to a way point and back with a tiny camera taped on with no gimbal or extra stuff like fpv or telemetry?

does this hover point work in any height? So when you are 100 metres off the ground, does the drone still hover "better"? Nice Video ;)

The amount of thrust needed to counteract the weight of the model doesn't change with height. The only thing you will see is something called 'ground effect' but that's only within about 2ft of the ground.. Happy flying!

Problem with this is that hover throttle varies (becomes lower) as you increase forward speed, and the change is fairly dramatic.

Yep, same with hover throttle setting in things like Betaflight and INAV too. The cool part is that the hover throttle point stays on the flatter part of the curve, so it is always easier. This video is aimed more at those who are trying to get the basics, not experienced pilots. Happy flying.

Can you do a video about making a DIY opentx radio? I have some older "Gold" Futaba 8 channel transmitters and I want to swap the electronics inside the radio transmitters with arduino and use the high quality "feeling at least" gimbal and switches and also add additional switches and a slider and a display... And maybe a cupholder and cigar holding tube....

Hi there, always appreciating your content! In this case I might have an improvement... I choose a 15 point curve, set the first point on the left to minus 100, the second just a bit lower than the hover value an than I draw a straight line from the second point, to the last one at plus 100. The advantage is, that you will have the full stick throw for your throttle resolution and you will be able to keep the height in all flight situations. Especially when you move forward, you will need more throttle to stay leveled. My micro flying improved greatly since I am using this method. If you need a throttle cut, you can just change the steepness of the line and end it at 80, or whatever. Works great for me!

Thanks. Question. I have a few models setup with the throttle scale set to a rotary knob. Basically, half position has a 25 percent throttle scale reduction and it goes up from there. This is for inside and outside flying. Is there a way in opentx to assign a curve based on a rotary knob position? I would like to have your suggested curve for inside use when the knob is at the midway position and no curve (or a standard curve) when the knob is at full. Thanks again

How have you setup the throttle scale adjustment?

@@Painless360 Well... I did that so i can copy paste the same model and can fine tune the scale with the knob easily for each model and person using the model. Which is my son and i. some models need a lower or higher scale inside and i prefer a lower scale than my son. I used a scale instead of limits to retain resolution.

@@Painless360 i did it by creating an input (cut) with knob s2 as the source. Then created a couple throttle mixes using that input to do some math to the throttle value. Does that make sense?

I've been trying to figure out how to do this. My QX7 doesn't have a "Curves" page. It only shows 9 pages, not the 13 like on your XLite. Firmware is 2.2.2 dated 06/24/2018. Am I behind?

My x7s does show the curves page but no helicopter page. I think it's all in how you have it setup in opentx companion. I'll fiddle with it and if I get a concrete answer for you will ping you.
