This OpenTx Tutorial will show you how to build a model template using flight modes and global variables. This configuration is slightly more complicated than a standard INPUT - MIX - OUTPUT so it is not intended for beginners. You should have a basic understanding of OpenTx Global Variables before watching this video.

Can you please make a flightmode trim video? I like to have a trim mode for when gear is down versus gear up and flight modes would help. I'm coming from spektrum though so I'm confused by this on tx16s and many others are on the forums.

Great videos, very helpful. So far so good! But one of the strongest reasons to use open TX is because it is multi-protocol. Unfortunately, almost nobody addresses this side of the coin. How do you determine whether the protocol you need is supported? How do you determine what protocol your drone is using? How and where do you set up a specific protocol? Perhaps you can put together another video covering this often ignored capability of open TX and the TX16s radio. Thanks for the great work and keep them coming!
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
The MPM page on Github lists supported protocols: github.com/pascallanger/DIY-Multiprotocol-TX-Module/blob/master/Protocols_Details.md There are way way way too many variables on protocols to be able to fit them into any sort of video. i.e. RU-vidr would have to buy a quad/drone/plane using each protocol. Your best bet is to bookmark that list and check it against your quad/drone and try to bind with it.

I was following your great tutorial setting up global variables. Have set them exactly like you but on the main page, when pressing 6P button they don't change anything including FM name?
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
Verify the flight modes use 6p1 or 6p2 or 6p3 for the switch. Press 6p1 or 2 or 3 while watching the FM screen. To validate your weights/expos are being used, fire up the channel monitor, hold stick to one side, activate different flight modes. You should see the output change according to the weight assigned to the mode. If you aren't seeing FM name on the main screen make sure on the telemetry page you're using flight mode is checked and that you put the name in flight mode. Lastly, don't know what firmware you're on, but upgrade. I've just verified this configuration on OTX and EdgeTx and it works on both.

Pretty dam interesting. I can see why"propeller heads" like this transmitter. Can't see why I would want any other box, when this one is so programmable, and so reasonable in price. Think I will go with OpenTX and not EdgeTx. Edge seems like it's put out by the radio maker to show off some of "it''s" hardware, and not really making the box work better. But then I could be wrong. I think you have moved to Edge, but tell me why in a video.
@RCVideoReviews

The manufacturers have nothing to do with the production of EdgeTX other than to supply the developers with hardware for testing. I switched to EdgeTX because it’s making actual progress where OpenTx is mostly stymied.

@@RCVideoReviews Still think I will go with OpenTX. Edge seems like a new "gee wiss" toy. Like putting lipstick on a pig. How about editing the titles on your OpenTX videos and putting numbers in them to say this is 1, 2, 3, and so on. That way people can start at the beginning and follow along. I know I will use all the videos to setup my TX12 when I get it.

@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 4 года назад
FYI: You can use ANY switch you want. Before these radios started shipping with 6 button switches, we used to use the 9 position matrix setup for flight modes. I've flown Eagletree, Ardupilot, and Arkbird using the two switch method. This 6 position switch is super easy. Did you watch this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ci4vbOoxEf4.html Think about putting that technique in place with flight modes. You could have the flight mode button announce the mode, then the T5 or T6 switch ENGAGE the mode.

Wow. Nice video. As a retired computer programmer I am loving my TX16S and have just started digging into it. The Global Variables video was great. I have just started flying and own two Volantex planes. I was wondering how to program flight modes on the TX and this was just the thing. One question though, these planes have stabilization which is turned off in expert mode. I see how to program the flight modes now but can't find anything on turning on and off the stabilization. I'm wondering if it's even a good idea. Thanks. Jerry Chicago.
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews Год назад
Stabilization configurations are highly dependent on the stabilizer brand. You'll need to dig into the manual to find out what channel turns the stabilizer on and off and use a mixer line on Edge/OpenTX to correlate with the channel specified in the manual. Whether or not it's a good idea to turn the stab off is dependent on your skills and what you need from a stab. My personal preference is to teach people to fly without a stab first.

Is it possible to do, with the push of a button, turn the sticks in the transmitter in the other direction? Suppose I fly in normal mode, left stick moves up a full throttle, right stick down the plane lifts nose and so on. After I press the button the stick mode is reversed, a left stick moves up a zero throttle, a right stick down the plane lowers the nose and so on.
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
I would probably set that up in a mixer. Switch up is normal. Switch down and the weights for both channels are inverted. i.e. If your throttle mix line on channel 3 has a weight of 100, set a switch in the mix SA up. Then add a line below the throttle on channel 3 with a weight of -100 and a switch SA down. That should do it.

@@RCVideoReviews I tried, when I change the weight to (-100) in the mix, the effect of the weight is eliminated, as if I did not move the stick at all. This is how I saw on the "channels monitor" screen,

Hi. I am wondering if with the new wave of transmitters in the market someone has set openTX v 2.3.10 for a heli with this features: nitro, CCPM 120 (requires command directly to the servos, not thru gyro), expos and throttle trim on. For now, I was able to adapt CCPM configuration for the Taranis (that is in the OpenTx university) in a MiniTitan, but I think there are still some missing issues to fully exploit the new transmitter, the way a simple Futaba 7C can be configured to fulfill the configuration of a nitro heli as described above.

Hi there, your videos are extremely useful for setting my radio up, the learning curve was quite steep but now its all getting quite straight forward. One question though, none of my models have control surface weights that are equal in both directions eg aileron differential, I have set them up in the Outputs section to be that way. How can I incorporate those settings into what you have shown in this video? Thanks!
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 2 года назад
Outputs are the last thing you apply to the calculation of inputs/mix/output endpoints before signals are sent to the radio. If you're asking how to change differential using a GVAR, you just follow the same process I showed for weight/expo. Remove the differential from outputs and in your mixer utilize differential with a GVAR as the variable.

A apriciate your very professional videos a lot. But I have a question that seems not being answered in another video: I have a switch for deactivation of my Gyro. That switch activates also a flight mode. With that flight mode I change the Expo in the mixer. So far so good. When I added a switch for dual rates (in Inputs) I got the problem that 70% weight in the Input Leads to just 59% in the Output. Because the Expo curve ist just ´cutted´. Do you understand and could you please give my a suggestion? That would be great!
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
"70% weight in the Input Leads to just 59% in the Output. Because the Expo curve ist just ´cutted´" 1) 70% weight in input gives 70% weight in output. You need to start there. Remove all expo, remove all trim, remove all offsets, remove all differentials and get your radio to show you 70% weight on input and output. 2) I have no idea what you mean when you say the Expo curve isn't "cutted" Expo only changes the curve around midpoints, it does not change the overall weight. A weight of 50% is a weight of 50% regardless of what I do with expo. Expo only changes the output rates as you approach and depart center. 3) If you have one switch activating a gyro, and a flight mode, and a weight, and an expo and you can't figure it out, start stripping things away. Take some of those layers out and build your configuration one step at a time. Make sure when you add one thing it doesn't break the prior thing.
@colinchapman6289
@colinchapman6289 3 года назад
So, I reproduced my problem: whenever I set the weight in Inputs and Expo in the Mixes the weight also changes. 70 is then not 70 any more. I tried that with a fresh model. I do that in Mixes because I want different Expo with the flight modes. And the Dual Rates I switch in Inputs. May that causes my problem...
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
Weights and expo changes belong in the Inputs screen. You should watch this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WmnZM5veAiE.html Whatever you do in Inputs gets fed to mixes then mixes takes a swing. Whatever you do in Mixes gets fed to Outputs and outputs takes a swing. So the final input value is operated on by mix changes. The final mix value is operated on my the outputs. You can use the same flight mode switch on the input screen as you're using on the mix screen to select weights/expo. You don't need to move them to mixes.

John, I am using three flight modes assigned to switch SE with two GV (1 and 2) for weight and expo, very similar to what you showed us in your video. My plane is capable of using flaperons because it has two servos in the wing, so I also programmed that function using switch SB, so I can choose any combination of flight mode with flaps position. The question is, how can be added another GV to simplify the adjustments of the weight in the flaps for the usual positions: flaps up (no mixing necessary), flaps down (about 15°) and flaps down (about 25°)? Regards
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 года назад
"The question is, how can be added another GV to simplify the adjustments of the weight in the flaps for the usual positions" I think you just repeat what you did with SE. You can use all the GVARs you want, you can create up to 64 inputs, and you can use all the switches you want to activate/deactivate. So if you already have a working GVAR setup for SE to set Weight and Expo, you can just repeat that process for SB. FYI: Just to mess with you, you can create GVARS that track other GVARS too...

Hi John, Thanks for your support: Flight modes control with the 6 pos. switch proves much better than the logic switch approach you made in the past. Strong point is the minimum and maximum value setting. I build now for each plane a 6pos program. And it becomes nearly imposable to create a situation in which one channel does not operate in a certain mode or switch setting First I used two 3 position switches to control logic switches which control the Fly modes. In a certain switch position elevator did not operate. But I found it in the simulator. Thumbs up for the Open TX / Companion developers. By the way I made my first Github wondering around. After machine languages 8085 processor Abt and mini Abt, MSDOS 3.2 and follow ups I am probably left to long out of the programming business. Last remark it could be helpful for the newbie’s to guide them through your video OpenTX/Compagnion tutorials by giving each video tutorial a number. Some newbie’s ask themselves now: was buying an OpenTX transmitter the right choice for me? Greetings Guus

I was confused about what Mode0 meant, but if I understood your video correctly, Mode0 is the default/fall-back mode if no flight mode is defined by the current switch position(s). So, you'd probably setup up Mode0 to be a middle of the road mode (depending on how one was using modes), right? I think that I know the answer to this but I'll ask anyway. In each mode, the trim setting are set and stored, totally independent of the trim settings in the other modes (unless you chose 'add trims to Mode_ trims.'), right?

Flight modes can be used to change trim behaviors, but the trims aren't necessarily exclusive. i.e. You can say use FM0 trims + FM3 trims, or you can say use FM3 trims only. It depends on what you want. But yes, Flight modes predominantly allow you to isolate trim behavior. There are other things you can do to. i.e. You can apply a mix or input in certain flight modes only. Say on a glider, you want the slider to be crow braking while landing, but flaps when flying. You could have a landing flight mode that invokes a mix for the slider to manipulate crow and a soaring flight mode that invokes a mix for the slider to manipulate flaps. There are also global variable applications in Flight Modes that go into depth beyond what this little chat box should be used to discuss.

If I have a mode assigned to each flap position (say, using Switch SE) and had Speed Mode and Thermalling Mode (where I reflex or camber the ailerons and flaps) using the 6-position switch, what would happen if I triggered two modes using switches SE and the 6-position at the same time?

Hi there, firstly thank you very much for your very informative tutorials, I've found a couple in your playlist which have taught me stuff I needed to know, so my question is this, I have a runcam split in the long range 7 inch quad which uses 3 switches to take advantage of all the functionality of the device (One switch for wifi on/off, one switch to change the modes and one switch to start stop recording, and these all have a use when paging and selecting various things off the OSD Menu) myi'm also using a TBS Micro RX (Only have 12 channels), however, the limitation isn't the Recieved, its that the radiomaster 16S only have a limited amount of 2/3 position switches which I already use all of for the various peripherals and modes like GPS Rescue etc, Lost model buzzer etc .... is there a way I can create 3 custom logical switches to use as the switching for the runcam split??

Logical switches can be used in the mixer which means they can be used to create an outbound event. The question you'll have to answer is how will you trigger the logical switch? You'll have to find a way to create a condition using logic (or hardware) to activate a logical switch.

@@RCVideoReviews thanks for the prompt reply brother, yeah it's nothing I can't live with out to be fair, I have the runcam split set to start auto recording when it's plugged in, and the menu can be reached through the onboard buttons on the mainboard, it would just have been nice to be able to start and stop the recording through a switch .. I'm all out of physical switches though .. there are always too few switches for a long range craft lol ... I'm a switch kinda guy!

John, great, great video. At time 18:23 appears briefly the Logical switch screen, do you use it? Regards

That logical switch configuration was a leftover from the 54 switch video. I do use logical switches regularly though.

Bloody H*ll.... Love your easy to understand explanations... Will be doing this from now on. BTW... A question. I set up an Eachine Mini Mustang on the internal Module and it works. The problem is that with only 30% stick throws I get full deflection of the control surfaces. How do I change the radio setup to give me full deflection with 100% stick throws.
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 4 года назад
Set stick weights to 100% and set the weight in your mixer lower or set the min/max in outputs lower. The path of travel is INPUTS - MIXER - OUTPUTS.

Hi John, Umm, random question, completely unrelated to this video topic, but I keep meaning to ask. Do you own a Jumper T16? If you do, can you see if the whole rear panel of the T16 pro will fit on the back of the Radiomaster TX16S please. I'm asking as I wonder if it would fit as I'd like to get rid of those big grips that the TX16S has on the back panel. I know it won't be a direct fit because of the SD card socket cut outs and I/O pins on the TX16S that the T16 doesn't have, but I could cut those holes / slots if it will fit otherwise.
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 4 года назад
I do not own a T16. The TX16s was my first radio from this line of radios. I know the TX16s only has 4 screws holding the backplate on and my T18 has 6.
@Graham_Shaw

@@RCVideoReviews Thanks for your quick reply John. You are right, the T16 has six screws like the T18, but I believe the are in the same places a the ones in the TX16S, it's just that Radiomaster don't use the middle two screw mounts in their design. I'll maybe ask the question on RCG or Helifreak, see anybody there knows. Cheers!!

The TX16s also has a much bigger battery tray and the battery connectors are in different places. The TX16s has the battery connected all the way at the bottom. The T16/T18 SD card is near the middle of the compartment. The TX16s SD card on the bottom of the radio.
@Graham_Shaw
@Graham_Shaw 4 года назад
@@RCVideoReviews Yeah, I know, but like you, I use 18650's so either battery tray is OK for me, and as I mentioned in my previous post, I don't mind cutting holes or slots out of the base of the rear panel to fit the SD card slot and I/O pins the TX16S has. Battery connector would be an issue though, that might be hard to get around, I'll need to look at pics of both more closely to get a better idea of whether that knocks the idea on the head right there, it might do! EDIT:- I've compared pics of both the Jumper T16 and the Radiomaster TX16S and the battery connector looks to be in a very similar place on both transmitters. It is much higher up in the Jumper T18 though!

I figured out how to adjust your GV in only one flight mode. I set up a logical switch for the flight mode that I want to be able to adjust. Then the special function to adjust the GV works off that logical switch, not ON. This will only work for adjustments to one flight mode, but it means I can tweak my offset for my glider elevator in take off mode, but when I go back to cruise it’s right where I left it. I guess if you used a different physical pot for each adjustment then you could have it work in multiple modes too.

Nice work. I added that to my radio just to see what you were up to. I used a an OR for the logical switch: 6p1 or 6p1 (could have used AND), then that switch for the SF. I still kind of wish the radio would revert to the hard coded value after reloading the model or restarting the radio. In any case, I think it's awesome you're taking this setup and running with it. Good work.

@@RCVideoReviews Yes that is exactly what I am asking. For my IMAC plane I have a snap condition that is activated at the last 5% of aileron stick travel. You initiate a snap, and the aileron stick at 95% travel activates the condition. It boosts aileron, and reduces rudder and elevator.

Sure, you can do it with Logical switches. L01 a>x I:AIL 95 That will light L01 when Aileron goes above 95. Set the Flight mode with L01 as the switch.
