www.operaphila.org -- On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Opera Company of Philadelphia brought together over 650 choristers from 28 participating organizations to perform one of the Knight Foundation's "Random Acts of Culture" at Macy's in Center City Philadelphia. Accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ - the world's largest pipe organ - the OCP Chorus and throngs of singers from the community infiltrated the store as shoppers, and burst into a pop-up rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's "Messiah" at 12 noon, to the delight of surprised shoppers. This event is one of 1,000 "Random Acts of Culture" to be funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation over the next three years. The initiative transports the classical arts out of the concert halls and opera houses and into our communities to enrich our everyday lives. To learn more about this program and view more events, visit www.randomactso.... The Opera Company thanks Macy's and the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ (www.wanamakeror...) for their partnership, as well as Organ Music Director Peter Conte and Fred Haas, accompanists; OCP Chorus Master Elizabeth Braden, conductor; and Sound Engineer James R. Stemke. For a complete list of participating choirs and more information, visit www.operaphila..... This event was planned to coincide with the first day of National Opera Week.

It's music, not a god. People are moved by non-religious music as well. If it's good, that's what matters. Hardly anyone cares or pays attention to antiquated lyrics which mostly speak to the ideology of its time. Replace the lyrics with latin and people are still moved. Or Swedish. Still moved. Or make it about Brittany Spears, still powerful music.

SargNickFury The organ is pretty loud, yeah, but unless you're standing directly next to it, you can still understand people talking to you pretty easily. So the sound of that many people would probably be either on par with or a bit louder than the organ. Now if it just had one of those 100' pressure pipes that the Boardwalk Hall organ has...

I think it's just AMAZING to get this many people to sing ANYTHING in unison... outside a church...

I always wonder when I see these -- how many of the people singing are actually part of the flash mob, and how many are just random people who have sung the song before, know their part and join in! I know I would do that! This is one of my absolute favorite songs!

I know one of the folks who was part of OCP, participated in this, but I agree with you, I sing soprano and know the voice part of this chorus enough I would have joined in ☺. Isn't it cool, though, that so many voices were raised?

The Heaven's Proclaim God's Glory...the seven choirs of angels, each having a part with the clear result that His children, stopped to acknowledge He is King of Kings, and Lord o'er Lords. What a touching moment; indeed, Handel has a special place in Paradise for this song. It touches the heart and soul; the human and the devine forever more. Thank you for sharing this experience.

This is incredible and very powerful music which is truly composed for the Glory of God! Such music must and only be from Heavens …As Handle said he must have really seen the Great Lord on His Throne. King of kings and Lord of lords shall reign forever and ever!!! My soul...oh me Lord!! The organ sounds amazing!!!

What sorry lives those who downvoted this must lead. I forwarded this to a choir director with whom I work and it brought her to tears as it does mine. As a church organist in the ELCA Lutheran church and Catholic churches in which I serve the majesty of the organ is enough to move me but the addition of the choirs bring tears. Thank you Macy's for providing the venue for these majestic performances and the choirs who participate.

ONLY IN PHILADELPHIA! Good job Philly! Well done and I pray this random act will continue. For the Lord God Omnipotent God Reigneth! This song, and I do not know of many, that is TRULY dedicated, and orchestrated and done accordingly so TO GOD. To be SHOUTED so that it pierces heaven, and rumbles the ground underneath the angels' feet. How many songs are for Christ, Mary and so forth compared to how many is for God? Hallelujah! Merry Christmas indeed! Merry Christmas to OUR GOD!
