ULTRAKILL is the epitome of “saying more with less.” Gabriel has two major cutscenes at the end of 3-2 and 6-2 yet his character shows such depth. It really is something special

"Face it brother, God is dead. The fire is long gone. You're chasing phantoms." "YOU LET YOUR FAITH BE SHAKEN BY A CAMERA?!" God damn I love this game. The "Altars of Apostay" is perhaps the most famous track amongst fans. I don't want to give any themes away, but there's a certain feeling that's hard to accurately pin down that goes through the players mind as they reach this level. You've gotten amazing accuracy from music alone in so many of your reviews, and I'd love to be able to finally put this feeling down into words. Give it a listen.

In ULTRAKILL, God has left. God is nowhere to be seen, and heaven has formed a council that now rules, and says they are following the will of god, which Gabriel has fought for for years, committing heinous crimes like dooming the souls inside the Leviathan to suffering and killing King Minos, but V1, has beat him, beat the father's light. Now the machine stands before him again, and as a result of this fight, he loses his faith in God, his faith in the council, and now he takes life into his own hands. He kills the council and... well, the rest is yet to be seen in ULTRAKILL ACT III: GODFIST SUICIDE

Gabriel's Monologue will NEVER fail to give me chills. Gianni is a true master of VA.

Fun fact: Hakita (the guy who made the game) straight up mixed the track just hours before the release of the game's second chapter

I don't know who voiced Gabriell but the emotions which Gabriell projects is just sinister, filled with rage but yet divine and angelic at the same time.

Gianni is a modern voice acting marvel, he not only shitposts constantly but can also pull off some for tier normal voice work

You nailed it with the description. When the fight starts, Gabriel gets the ENRAGED effect, and then loses it when you hit phase 2. And in the sad tune at the end, which plays in the cutscene after the level, Gabriel is questioning his very existence and his purpose as an angel, a servant of God.

A theme so good that Hakita gives you the privilege of listening to it on loop while Gabriel repeatedly murders you for hours on end.

I actually think that Gabriel is the main character... Not V1. I honestly kinda want him to change his ways and then in some final fight when it seems unwinnable, he descends into the battle to fight side by side with you. Such an amazing character.

ultrakill has one off the most creative soundtracks i ever seen in a game in one second you be dancing with the guitar riffs and then you be hearing classical music the next you just dont see this stuff often i am glad you are covering this game

5:02 Funny you should mention that, that feeling is also tied into the mechanics of Gabriel's 2nd fight, where instead of starting off calm and collected before descending into his enraged mode, he starts off the 2nd fight enraged and then transitions to his calm and collected (relatively speaking) mode during the 2nd half of the fight.

The line "I will grind you down until the very sparks cry for mercy!" is one of the most Metal lines ever written and it goes so much harder than it has any right to.

If you want to read into it... this song could very well be a "duel" of instruments as well as music. The industrial and metallic drums and guitar for V1 and the Violin (I think) and more churchy music for Gabriel.

The camera focus right as Gabriels voice cracks make it seem like his rage was so extreme it cracked the camera

it's probably full of rage because it was composed and soundfonted in _4 hours_ for the update's release.

One thing I love about Hakita as a composer: he draws inspiration from an extremely diverse range of sources, with main influences being rather obscure and hard to get into bands that specialize in genre bending, and he wears those influences on his sleeve, proudly, but without flattering imitation. There might be an impressive composer in the making here.

part of why this is so dramatic is because Gabriel is losing his shit fighting you, (due to some circumstances) he enters the fight with the mentality of "I get no more second chances. Either I win this fight and everything returns to normal, or I lose and E V E R Y T H I N G is over." So when he realizes that he is losing he kinda loses his mind. (also when I said everything in the quote I mean literally everything, hell, his life, heaven, existence itself)

Yessss! More Ultrakill, please- Hakita put so much effort into creating a distinct feel for each layer, level, and encounter. My personal favorites are Into the Fire, Castle Vein, Dune Eternal, Death Odyssey, and Tenebre Rosso Sangue- but the tracks flow so well into each other and tell you so much about the journey that the story represents, I would really say that the best way to experience them is through the two OST albums Hakita posted to his youtube channel. If you still do full OST livestreams, I think Ultrakill would be the perfect subject.

Honestly, the pauses at 6:40 where it's just that gritty sound is really an earworm to me. Hits just right.

This boss fight starts with Gabriel in the enraged mode with the dark dimly lit arena and when you finishes his first health bar he goes to his default mode and the arena lights up, he starts letting out a few laughs here and there as he's forgotten his hate, and is starting to enjoy himself in that fight, fully there in the moment.

I love how even though Marco has yet to play Ultrakill, he can perfectly interpret what Gabriel is feeling in this moment of the game.

the humming/buzzing towards the end of the song when gabriel starts talking is technically a different track called horns of insurrection, which is fitting what follows when gabriels leaves for heaven

the soundtrack is art, the gameplay is without flaw, the artstyle is perfect, the feel of the game is amazing, the devs put in so much effort to bring about what their dream game is, while also staying very social with the community. I dont think theres a better game than Ultrakill, or a better gaming company than NewBlood. these guys are just amazing at what they do. it reminds me of the old days, when games were made with a dream in mind, not money.

In the actual game, Gabriel describing how he's going to kill the player causes the organ music to suddenly cut. I think that adds something too

In the first phase of the fight, Gabriel is so mad that he becomes insanely predictable. Then in the second phase he just starts going random mode.

The name of the song has deeper meaning. Since this fight (the second fight with gabrile) Thaught gabriel that the fire of the god he has praised is extinguished. Since god left the reality becayse humanity being humanity.

If you ever wanna see the game, you should watch an incorrect summary of Ultrakill act 1 by Max0r Mind you it is composed mostly of memes, but it is still hilarious and you get to see the actual game play.

I hope that ULTRAKILL's OST gets a real orchestral performance some day.

Gabriel in the first encounter, stays calm until you get him to half health, where he gets enraged. In the second encounter he starts out enraged, but when you get him down to half health this time, he realizes that he is letting his anger consume him. In the second half of that fight, he is no longer enraged. If you beat him, he reflects on his actions and comes to the realization that god is no more, everything that he had faith in is a lie. So Gabriel does something drastic before leaving heaven for the last time...

You should Listen all soundtracks of ULTRAKILL on a stream, like Terraria Calamity Mod OST First Act's soundtracks name is "INFINITE HYPERDEATH" and Second Act's soundtracks name is "IMPERFECT HATRED"

In Gabriel’s first fight theme, the organ was present. However, it was presented with a more “holy feel”, as if it’s just to signal his presence as he gazes upon you trespassing his palace.

Seeing as the Wait of the World update just dropped, maybe you could check out the P-2 suite (Tenebre Rosso Sangue, Pandemonium, War)?

So for some lore: in act 1, Gabriel was the Judge of Hell. After he is defeated, the Council tears out his light, giving him about 24 hours or so to defeat you, The Player aka The Machine aka V1. In act 2, Gabriel only knows hatred, and is called the Apostate of Hate. He is very much wanting to destroy you cuz if he doesn't, he very much will cease to be. But after you defeat him again, he comes to realize that The Council is corrupt. He takes his revenge and when the last person says "WAIT! IF YOU KILL ME, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO RECOVER YOUR LIGHT! YOU WILL DIE IN 8 HOURS!!!" and Gabriel knows this fully well before beheading the member. And the fact you was able to figure a good chunk of that out just from listening to the music is impressive. Major props to you, but also great work to Hikatti (probably mispelled that name) on this boss theme. It captures the feeling of the emotions and intensity of the battle and its motives well.

My favorite has always been where that dissonant guitar riff hits, adds that feeling of desperation. Really hits home how Gabriel is feeling. He's not fighting you at this point to protect anything, he's fighting you to reclaim what he lost. To prove himself worthy of God's light.

Sorta unrelated but I would recommend checking out the Shin Ultraman ost especially "m87", "original sin", "out of body state" , and "is humanity to die?" since those are the ones with vocals tho if you want you can check out the parts of the ost that are remasters from the original 1966 Ultraman show

Gabes act 1 theme being called "divine intervention" may be refering to the fact as he, a divine being, is intervening on your path through hell Gabes act 2 theme being called "the death of gods will" may be because after the fight, he looses his eill to fight for god, and realizes god himself eill never return, and finds joy once again b3cause he finally met something that could best him, as all he knew was the taste of victory

Hello, huge ultrakill fan here! To give some context: To use the tagline, "MANKIND IS DEAD. BLOOD IS FUEL. HELL IS FULL." You play as V1 and we don't know much about V1 other than it was a prototype warmachine that never hit full production for varying reasons. And yes, blood is fuel. For whatever reason, V1 has gone through several layers of hell and destroyed pretty much everything in its path. Gabriel already fought it once, and lost. Some council in heaven, the rulers (now that God in the setting has been gone for some time), see this as Heresy, and strip 'The Light' from Gabriel. He'll be dead in 24 hours unless he can destroy V1! Gabriel speaking during what 'ye listened to is the second time Gabriel fights V1, and yes. He's furious! He ain't called the "Apostate of Hate" during this fight for no reason, I suppose. I believe that "The Death of God's Will" is a 'redux' (I don't know a better term for it) of his theme Divine Intervention you hear when you first fight him. Funnily enough, during the second phase of the fight Gabriel seems like he's.. enjoying the fight. That he relishes in the fact nothing has made him fight or *feel* the way he does during the fight. At the end when he's defeated, he retreats and ends up on a... 'journey of introspection', of sorts. V1 kicked his butt so hard it lead him to having a massive character arc. "May your days be many.. hah... and your days few." Ironic. Gabriel only has a few hours left to live. And what he decides to do during those final hours is *drastic*

The concept of V1 is actually, genuinely horrifying. It's a cold, soulless, mindless mass of steel that rampages through the depths of hell because the blood of humans is simply no longer available, and even the likes of God's right hand can't bring it even to it's knees.

Now you gotta listen to "Tenebre Rosso Sangue". It's a relatively new development for Ultrakill, and I think you'd really enjoy it.

This theme gives me the impression that we're in a Blasphemous level of fucked, but your opponent is like "me is machine and don't care and will only shoot and parry".
