This was a really interesting video because Koby clearly has a lot of talent and a great understanding of her own instrument! I think the biggest takeaway for any student is to ensure that you have control over your narrative when you enter an audition.
It can be tempting to try and throw all of your skills at them in the short time you have, but it's often better to just isolate a few of your favorite abilities. That way, the listeners can still make their own interpretations of the many possibilities they have with your voice! Before entering a competition, I recommend knowing your judges, researching the past winners, and practicing techniques that you might see in other genres. Happy singing!

She can clearly sing. I would’ve asked her to sing a ballad. Straight, no runs, and no screaming.

That’s what I thought If she sang another song it would have been good. She has the potential to be a great singer if she sang a normal song.

To quote Simon Cowell in response to the audition, "What the hell was that?!"

I honestly wonder if something went on behind the scenes we don’t know about. Producers on these shows are notorious for exploiting contestants. Of course that doesn’t change the vocals here, but the way she acted in the audition was so awkward and uncomfortable, it seems like something was off with the whole thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was pressured into singing something she didn’t want to sing/have the technique to sing. Like you said, there’s more to the audition process than the song itself.

I have heard through the grape vine about how these kinds of shows are run, so I agree with you. Of course, everything is anecdotal at best from other auditioners, but there seems to be a lot of pressure and expectation to make "good television" at the expense of the smaller artists who want to get a chance to share their skills. It's why I've always had a bit of an axe to grind with AI and AGT etc etc.

Aubrey listen to old Nightwish videos... There you can see how good a classic trained voice goes with heavy metal ;) I love this vibe and many others too, because when their lead singer left, they didn't find a good replacement right away... Until Flo. But also we have to admit one thing, not everyone has the ability to be trained to sing Opera... You need to be kinda born with the voice.

I think one of her biggest problems is emulating a style of singing that is clearly not her natural way of singing. I know there's a market out there of NB singers emulating (or trying to) emulate Black American singers, but it's never as..."successful" as folks think it is. There ARE a lot of good things going on here.
