I am 70 and have sung on and off since I was 18. Learning a language is like singing. A language has a rhythm, a pitch, a certain approach to intonation, phrasing, and tempo. True there are differences between speaking and singing a language. A singer in whatever language will "bend" the words to the feel and technique involved in singing that language. Lately, I have been listening to a lot of Dutch pop/rock music. The most popular singers will sing in English. Still there are others who sing exclusively in Dutch or alternate between the two languages. Subsequently, I am learning to speak Dutch. There are some songs such as Anouk's "Wen D'r Maar Ann" = Get Used To It, that speak to me. Being functionally fluent in French, the contrast is of night and day. Dutch has hard gutteral Gs and soft gutteral chs. Native speakers are very good at pulling back on the harsh sounds of the language when singing it. But, first I must crawl before I can fly. For an American English speaker, the temptation is to approach the hard G like clearing your throat. But upon doing that you wind up speaking Dutch like an Arabic person might approach the G. The technique is easy once you wrap your American head around the concept. To approach sounding like a Dutch speaking person, start to say the letter H, as an English speaker would say it. But, then you quickly slide the back of your tongue toward the back of your throat...without choking or swallowing your tongue. For English speakers, especially we Americans this is very challenging but not impossible. Adding to the challenge are the Dutch / English cognate words. They are spelled the same and mean the same as their English cousins. Dutch people say them according to Dutch conventions of pronunciation. It takes some focus at first, not to say the words as you would while speaking English.

I know it’s difficult to catch all the emotions when listening to a foreign language, but you did! To me, the part that strikes me the most is when she sings “c’est ça, je suis malade”, with a mix of laughter and sorrow, it really conveys the distress and despair, bordering to insanity, of the character.
@stuarttusspot4769
@stuarttusspot4769 7 месяцев назад
Also, the word "malade" can also mean "insane" in some contexts, usually when you're angry at someone who does something very dangerous, as in: "Il est malade, ce type !" = "This is guy crazy!".
@victoriagossani8523
@victoriagossani8523 7 месяцев назад
I'm French and I've no doubt that when she sing "c'est ça, je suis malade", she answer back to her lover, in a memory of an argument where he was says her "tu es malade" and she was answers "for sur, I'm sick", and this "malade" in French means "insane" (like Stuart says in the other comment). You can feel a mix of anger and despair in it with a little bit of sarcasm, or like you said laugher and sorrow. This show how prodigious she is in interpretation, not to speak of her wonderful voice.

I've just watched three other reactions to this song, where the 'reactors' were only repeating how beautiful Lara is and how emotional the song is, while wiping away imaginary tears. They were not even looking at the video and reading the lyrics and were obviously more interested in the number of views. So in contrast, I find your reaction very refreshing and enlightened with so much expertise. Your emotion is not fake because you realize that her performance is, literally, extra-ordinary. Thank you for this great analysis of it.

@@jessicasopranonotes yay! There is little talk of WHY the music affects any of us - and its different elements for everyone - but at any moment, so many things are available for the artist to use - people talk about Lara Fabian or Dimash using everything. They are remarkable, but the truth is that all of those things are available but few singers are either aware, or choose to focus on something else. Integration of all those available things...rhythm , stage movement/energy, timbre, note length, register choices (yes, choice - you reviewers who just say ITS IMPOSSIBLE!)...use it all.

The original singer of this song is Serge Lama. “Je suis Malade” was composed by Serge Lama himself and his friend Alice Dona and is based on an “impossible” love. The song I am sick is inspired by a true heartache by Serge Lama, the story of a long secret relationship. In 1969, the singer met Michèle Potier in Chamonix. Love imposes itself as a certainty, but they are neither free: he married in 1968 Daisy Brun his press officer, she is married and the mother of a little boy. They love each other in secret for several years and promise to recover their freedoms, but Michele hesitates and finally flees and settles in Morocco for professional reasons. Lama is desperate, he wants to put his pain into words without succeeding, until the day he confides in his friend Alice Dona: "this story hurts me, it makes me sick". Back home, at the piano, Alice Dona composes a melody in a few hours, which very quickly, she plays the singer. It's a revelation and Serge Lama writes almost all of the text in 20 minutes. But his record company does not approve of this song, they thought people weren't going to like it so Serge Lama threatened to leave the record company and finally they agreed to release it in 1973. And it's THIS music who made it known. Then Dalida took over this song in 1978.

Agreed 61K seeing this is not enough. Do we want an entire generation of singers to learn not to suppress emotion or not? The French have always been magnificent at this. Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Serge Lana, Johnny Halliday. Only a few Americans ever learned to sing like this. But if you want to hear it, try Nina Simone "Wild is the Wind".

@Fedor Ivanov Just an aside; when Jackie Evancho was 10 years old, her producer David Foster was searching for songs for Jackie to sing at her first Public Broadcast Special. He contacted Lara about her song 'Broken Vow' and asked her if she would rewrite it for Jackie because he said it was "too mature" for her. Lara wrote it in French about environmental decline because that was Jackie's big thing back then(she is 20 years old now and STILL into it). Needless to say, 'Imaginer' went over big with the audience that night.

I find this woman to outshine some of the biggest current musical voices. Her ability outshines Mariah with her running up and down the scales yet emotionless. Barbra Striesand who has an exquisite way of phrasing, Celine the woman with the incredible pitch and arrive at notes very high effortlessly. Lara is a magnificent vocalist, a one of a kind story teller as if we are hearing her pain and passion for the very first time. She's known for masterful technique. I've come to think of her as something of a vocal chameleon. She is ALL about the story. (Calls herself a songwriter with a voice.) You haven't heard one of her originals yet - this is a cover she tweeked significantly to famously make her own - but I think you'd love exploring her work/skills. 🖖🏽 She's fluent and writes in French Italian English and Spanish. Sings very very competently in 12 according to native speakers. Just a brilliant artist. Not her originals, but her covers of Caruso and Pedere L'Amore are sublime.

For all the times I’ve listened to this song/watched other people react to it, I’d never heard or considered your stunning revelation about the descending scale as a descent into despair and heartbreak. Like, I had to pause a second and just bask in that assessment. And then the combination of your gut-punching emotion and beautifully explained musical elements truly makes this one of the best reactions I’ve ever watched, not just of this song, but ever. Brava, and thank you.

I've been SO FREKING LUCKY in my life, to have enjoyed this talented ARTIST named Lara Fabian, live in concert three times in Athens, Greece where I do live. Everytime she performs this very one song, is like taking her soul outside of her own body and putting in on the stage, like it's an object or what and sharing it with the audience. It's PHENOMENONAL!

Lara is actually an idol of Dimash and your analysis describes why that is. He tries to bring some of the same emotion and passion to his singing that she does... Also, another reactor noticed that after she finished singing, she was still emotionally into the song for another 30 seconds or so because she wasn't able to even acknowledge the crowd. I can't imagine putting that much into a whole night of singing without being totally exhausted just from the pure emotions she is feeling to give those performances...

yes that´s correct she lives everyting she sings .. she believes in all the lyrics , that the reason it resonates so much with us listeners ,not to mention her beautiful voice and tone ! it´s like story telling ! I cry too everytime i watch it and i thought it will be more impactful for french people like me but i can see that music is so universal and you don´t need to understand all the words to feel the emotion ... music is indeed universal !

I would have to say that this is one of the most amazing performances I have ever seen. Such vocal talent. Such an arrangement. Your reaction is beyond spot on. Lara Fabian should have been and should be held as one of the best singers in history. It is no wonder that Dimash and Josh Groban want to emulate her. I don't even understand French although I have seen the subtitles with translation, but I didn't even need to see them to understand the complete desperation and passion and pain given in this performance. It is universal and yet I do not think that there are many other artists that could have done this to express the pure emotion. You can see it at the end of this video and the original video where you see her trying to recover from such an impactful and immersive performance - drawing from something that some of us can draw from but hopefully most cannot. Watch the ending to see how much that cost her. I do not think at all that it was faked. She performed this song at the risk of her health and personal safety and had to take a minute to dissociate herself from this. I do not think that was an act at all. That is not a bad thing I am saying, only to understand that she is portraying something that many could never understand. Pain, rejection, hope, denial, fear, love, expectation, (so many other emotions), all at once, summed up by her 17 second held ending vocal letting us all know these feelings all at once. Masterpiece is such a simple term to this as this will go above so many heads. Love you all.

For me, one of the most masterful parts is round 14:30. When she's been showing how this love makes her physically ill since the beginning of the song (the drinking, the body language), there's a shift at that moment where she shows how it also made her mentally ill (« malade » in French has both meanings) with the smile, the laugh, the wonderful « C'est ça, je suis malade! ». It's heartbreaking. Lara Fabian is both one of the greatest singers in the world, but she is also a very genuinely kind and loving being. Clearly an empath that we all should cherish. Good analysis on your part, very interesting.

I agree, Lara is uniquely good at conveying emotion by varying her own volume but keeping overall perceived volume more even by varying microphone position. Meanwhile forcing you to listen as if to a whisper. Few are getting into such actual useful instruction to singers who wish to follow Lara's path. This breakdown on both the musical intro and the first phrases of vocal is expert - a director not just a singer perspective.

Lara Fabian is by a long way the best conveyor of emotions; her technique is flawless, her execution of that technique is flawless, her tone is flawless, her range is flawless, her breath control is flawless, and her belting is beyond compare.
