Hello Jess [Soprano Notes] ! Nightwish fans here, your reaction just appeared on our radar.. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in 2013 at Wacken Open Air festival, in front of a 82k+ audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. You really understood what Floor Jansen did there, and thank you for explaining it to us all! Instant subscribe for that. You appreciate all the key elements of a Nightwish show: the intricate classical-structured "cinematic score" composition, the high level of musicianship of all band members, the stellar vocals and charisma of Floor Jansen, our Dutch metal queen. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " Hope you'll continue this journey with us, so I'll drop here a list of songs with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory): "Romanticide" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zz_7OCCQlXs.html "Storytime" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pvkYwOJZONU.html "Ever Dream" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1Xi4n8dJcF8.html "Song Of Myself" live at Wacken 2013 (dark/metal) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lQu5QjidHWg.html "Dead Boy's Poem" - live Buenos Aires 2018 (soulful ballad) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S8E3L7ggLMM.html "Ghost River" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-05eitd-EA6I.html "Dark Chest Of Wonders" live at Wacken 2013 (metal, the greatest show opener ever) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OvOD6xecph4.html "My Walden" live at Wembley 2015 (celtic / folk) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-knqeI807ZlY.html "Sleeping Sun" live at Tampere 2015 (ballad) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rsotlzr9wNw.html "Stargazer" live at Tampere 2015 (operatic vocals / metal) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NhEuAPYm_Ug.html "Slaying The Dreamer" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wA44tjaP5n0.html "I Want My Tears Back" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (celtic / folk vibe) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TBOdgxjb0kM.html "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" live In Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t26r_vAYQ0Q.html "Weak Fantasy" live at Tampere 2015 (dark metal) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AN239Pbqbjo.html "7 Days To The Wolves" live at Wembley 2015 (dark metal) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XvsfwAPbWXc.html And if you want to hear Floor growling :) then try "Yours Is An Empty Hope" live at Mexico City in 2015 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DuwY1d-KIss.html Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: ru-vid.com/group/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg You can also react to Floor Jansen "tapping" other musical genres in Beste Zangers 2019 (TV show from Netherlands) here is a playlist made by Floor herself (start listen it in reverse order..): ru-vid.com/group/PL8iSYWeQhlimgUnWw1FDdiJN0msPzqpLo To understand better the context of this show you should visit also Jenniezelf's YT channel (En subtitled materials): ru-vid.com For entire episodes of the show with En translation, you should check Denise Hofs's DM channel: www.dailymotion.com/xpinkeu/videos In these pandemic times, Floor Jansen has decided to make covers for us, which you can find on her YT channel ru-vid.com/show-UCxy4Ijz2QKXXJaREs-isxwA - there are already 2 covers there, the first is "Let It Go" from "Frozen" (2 weeks ago, already over 1M views) and the second - "Alone" from "Heart" (released just a few hours ago) .. It's wonderful hearing someone, with such a beautiful and trained voice herself, confident enough to compliment and admire another talented vocalist. I recommend two Nightwish/Floor Jansen songs that I think will appeal to you. "Shoemaker" is a song about the NASA scientist Eugene Shoemaker, whose ashes are scattered on the moon. In this song, Floor moves through some very technically difficult singing and finishes with a display of her opera capabilities: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Rjp_DfvJimg.html The second song, "Yours Is An Empty Hope" puts the opposite end of the Floor vocal spectrum on display as she goes into death metal mode. Pay close attention to Floor in the chorus as most reactors completely miss it as they don't think that a woman can sound like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DuwY1d-KIss.html Here are their tour dates with three shows in the U.S. nightwish.com/#tour

@adecentdelinquent8986

I think in "Yours is An Empty Hope" the problem is the sound mixing, her growls are so low in the mix both studio version and live version. The bassist's vocals is overshowding her because his voice is more high pitched in this case and so is louder than her lower pitched growls.
@billattercliffe8655
@billattercliffe8655 3 года назад
@@adecentdelinquent8986 Another explanation is that she is simply holding back and letting Marko's voice lead. We hear her crank up the volume at the end of the song. It's really noticeable in the Rock in Rio concert how loud her growl can actually be.
@Temujim
@Temujim 3 года назад
@@billattercliffe8655 I think youre right there (I didnt even know she was the one growling, never had seen the live version). She lets Marko take the lead intentionelly using the growl to give power to the chorus. I'm 100% not a pro dont even know how to sing, is just my feeling there.

I've heard her sing in English, Dutch, German, Finnish, Spanish, Italian and Latin. I've heard her do deathgrowls and hold a D6 for 8 seconds. And I've heard her do all those things live on stage. Sure, there are singers who can do any of the things she does better than her, but there's only one who can do all of them and sound great and convincing doing it all. Beautiful analysis, Jess. The Drummer on this is Jukka Nevalainen. He's a human metronome. Floor is a vocal teacher herself and has exquisite understanding and control of those gold plated pipes of hers. It also helps that she's 6 feet tall or so. She has a large chest cavity for resonance and air storage. Throw in the insane amount of work she's put into her craft, and I bet she could take in enough air to swim to the bottom of the ocean if she holds her breath. They are all amazing musicians. By the time this song turned up in the set, they had been going for a while already and they still make a live performance sound like it was done in studio.

WHY "GHOST LOVE SCORE" BY NIGHTWISH COULD BE THE BEST MUSICAL COMPOSITION IN THE PAST 50 YEARS I should begin by stating my music credentials, which do not include much in the way of professional training. I can read music. I took classical piano lessons in my elementary years. Started with the trumpet in high school band, but spent the last three years in the percussion section. I have been a part of a church choir from 1st grade until now. Most of the choir directors were good and a few of them were true vocal coaches. My early music appreciation was steeped in the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods from ensembles and concertos to opera and symphonies. So there's that. When I could afford to purchase my own musical selections, they were by and large rock and roll. Then the likes of Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, and Rush came along to create a new genre called Progressive Rock. This class is defined by longer songs that usually tell a story, complex scores influenced by classical and jazz, and (usually) a bigger variety of instruments. I have been stuck in the early '70s, enjoying 50 year old favorites until about a month ago, when I discovered the next morph of Prog Rock... Symphonic Metal, which had been a thing for almost 20 years, now. I never knew this because radio stations rarely air any piece that goes beyond the average length of 2 minutes and 49 seconds. I was poking through RU-vid one day, and came across Elizabeth Zharoff's channel, where she gave her first reaction and critique of a band that she (and I) had never heard of. Nightwish! As an opera singer and voice coach, her viewers had repeatedly requested her review of "Ghost Love Score" for the superb voice quality of their lead singer, Floor Jansen. Well, both of our mouths were agape throughout the performance. (2013 live at Wacken, Germany, pronounced VAH-ken, with 82,000 fans.) I listened to Zharoff's critique with intensity, all the while feeling like I had been on a roller coaster. In order to shorten this story, I must have watched 15 or more other "first reactions" featuring this same performance of "Ghost Love Score". They ranged from nobodies, to other vocal coaches, choir directors, opera singers, metal bands, and guitarists. Either these people were great pretenders, or they were all genuinely flabbergasted with both Floor and the band. I will let each one speak for themselves. I, on the other hand, will provide my reasons for why I think this piece is so outstanding. Nightwish is a six piece band founded in 1996 in Finland. There is a bass guitar (and singer), lead guitar, synth/keyboardist (composer of most of their works), drummer, an Englishman for pipes, recorder, and oboe, and a female lead singer. Since the Fall of 2012, that has been Floor Jansen, a genuine Dutch Viking of 6' 2" with lots of classical training. One might think that this would be average except for excellent training and skill of each member playing as one, plus coordinated background recordings by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Boys' Choir. Although these great attributes apply to a majority of Nightwish scores, it is perfectly displayed in "Ghost Love Score." Remember the genre Symphonic Metal? A symphony is divided into four movements; the first movement is usually fast (allegro) and introduces the main theme, the second one is slow (adagio) and tells a story, the third is medium and louder (scherzo) and brings the story up to the point of resolution, and the fourth movement is another fast allegro or rondo, bringing back the first theme to a crescendo for the finale. "Ghost Love Score" does all of this in less than 11 minutes. The first movement opens with the drummer as the feature, pounding out an odd rhythm. It took me awhile to figure out that it was alternating measures of 6/8 time and 5/8 time, giving 11 beats to the cadence. I won't even focus on the accompanying backdrop screens and pyrotechnics going on. Not an easy trick to keep up. After a few bars, the tones are modulated up and the band settles into 4/4 time as Floor takes the microphone. The tune is soft and the voice is ethereal as the topic is introduced. This is a love that has been lost, but memories abound and a piece of the lover's heart will go forever missing. The second movement blends right in, as a change is noted in the overall broader sound structure. The music is still in 4/4 but Floor's presentation is slower, more deliberate, and adds meaningful insight to the first. In fact, she stays mostly in a chest voice, declaring the things that were and might have been. As in many symphonic pieces where one instrument copies another, the lead guitar repeats the melody that Floor sings, ending in two slide riffs, high to low. Following this adagio, there is a brief interlude (over two minutes) as Floor leaves the stage. The orchestra continues and the melody becomes more somber, adding tension as the audience holds its breath. The third movement (scherzo) blasts everyone's attention with the prominent drummer switching to 6/8 time along with keyboard, guitars and what sounds like 50 strings. Floor returns to the microphone and belts out what sounds like a sea shanty song, followed by a series of perfect pitch operatic shouts and 80,000 voices join in. Chest voice equals more power. At this point, the instruments mirror the strange 11 beat syncopation as in the beginning. A brief drum solo bridges this to the final movement. The fourth movement (allegro) by no surprise, follows suit. Dropping back to 4/4 time, the finale begins with the repeat of the opening theme, only it is more robust and it quickly builds in volume. The vocalist becomes the focal power who pushes the finale to its conclusion, nailing a long A-flat #6 for the crescendo and resolve. After reviewing what I just wrote, I realize that a synopsis of this work proves nothing of its being a masterpiece. At least, I focused more on the symphonic purity more than anyone else that I have watched. Some of the reaction people started to comment about it, until Floor started to sing and she, rightly so, became the only topic. I can only recommend that you watch and listen to "Ghost Love Score" at least three or four times. The eyes and ears will pick up on something overlooked each time. I am convinced that each member of the band not only knows their instruments, but understands music theory and could hold their own above the crowd as solo artists. I have listened to bassist Marco Hietala sing solos and he has a magnificent voice. I have listened to Floor Jansen sing the cover for the country song "Shallow," proving her multi-style talent. This specific composition, however, brings them all to the perfection of a well-oiled machine, becoming a sum much greater than the parts. To arrange and perform the multiple time signatures and stay in perfect synch with instruments, vocals, and even the insertion of prerecorded philharmonics at the appropriate places is nothing but masterful. Floor Jansen happens to be the third vocal lead for Nightwish and is the perfect fit. She sings with confidence, without trying to overshadow the other members. She exudes passion and energy, mixing her vocal styles from, lullaby, to folk, to metal growl and shouts, to opera. She engages with the fans dramatically, like she is singing to one listener. Quite frankly, I have never heard a voice like hers, and switching between angelic and blowing the roof off the stage in perfect tune has left me, along with all of the "first reaction" RU-vidrs, just speechless. Several have displayed the goose bumps on their arms, while others have been moved to tears. In conclusion, I can only say that "Ghost Love Score" pulls the listener into the story. It is the culmination of a 40-minute symphonic piece and a 3-hour opera that must be consumed in 10-1/2 minutes. It is both beautiful and exhausting, but definitely an experience. If Beethoven were alive today, would he have composed something like this? I think "Ghost Love Score" will stand the test of time as the best of this era.

I have noticed that classical structure, too, although I am not as knowledgeable in music as you seem to be. Already the richness of rythm and instrumentation, not to mention extensive use of a full classical orchestra PLUS choir AND boy sopranos, all with the band that plays live as tight and precise as a mastered recording, make Nightwish a band in its own league.

I typically go on RU-vid to watch a video here and there without even being logged in, so I never subscribed to any channels. I kept telling myself some day I would log in and subscribe to some channels, but months and years kept going by without me doing so. Well, today is that day. I logged in and subscribed immediately after the video finished! Your review was incredible and I look forward to spending time on your channel and watching more of them -- especially if you review more from Floor Jansen and Nightwish!

Wow, amazing review! The expert explanations about her voice were really cool, and it was very funny to see your reactions to the different parts of the song ( and I did had my fair share of reviews of this song in the quarantene! lol ) Fun fact.. This year I got back in the Nightwish spiral after some years apart and the guys were like.. "floorgasm" this and floorgasm that.. and I was like.. dude, gross! But you know what, that last part of this performance is totally a floorgasm. She's a total badass! The dudes are totally flooding your channel, welcome to the Nightwish army! :)

I've seen them. It's like a roller coaster lifetime... loving, hurting, crying, screaming, swooning, peace and punching the air like an idiot. I've seen a LOT of 'legends', many in their prime, but nothing, nothing like Nightwish live.

I was there in 2013 , and i saw the godess for the first time , this is only a part of she can do , the most versatile singer in the world, her voice and breathing control is insane , if you want a crazy belting try" everdream " same concert , for her versatility and for now , she released today a cover of " alone " from heart , and you can check also her prestation on dutch show " best zangers" she did 7 or 8 songs but "phantom of the opera" with henk poort is the highlight of the show. Greetings from Portugal.

Please continue the Nightwish journey. It’s a life changing experience! Floor can sing anything from opera to death growls. She is super versatile! About a year ago she was on a Dutch Tv show called Beste Zangers and she did 6 solo songs and 2 duets. She sang in 4 different languages. She did a German opera song called Vilja Lied and she did Phantom of the Opera with the original Dutch Phantom Henk Poort. It recently hit 10 million views. The night it was aired it broke the internet. Also check out her personal YT channel. She has been releasing covers cause she misses singing so much. 1st cover was Let it Go (Frozen) and today she released Alone (Heart). And yes her breath control is ridiculous. According to Floor she has the lungs of a diver. Looking at your reaction you just experienced your first Floorgasm 🤘🏻❤️

Your'e breakdown was fascinating from an opera singers point of view on how things she did that fascinated you throughout the song. Gabriel from nightwish has no doubly responded with a great list of song and prder from nightwish, but also check out her performances on the besta zangers show(she does a duet with Henk Poort with phantom of the opera, Henk also does the sounds of silence for Floor). Another great one song is Sancta Terra from the Band Epica with Floor doing a duet with Simone

I've heard several vocal coaches, singers, a few operasinges reacting to Nightwish and your reaction was one of the most informative, appreciating the whole band, not just the female vocalist Floor Jansen. I want you to know that Marko Hietala, the bassist, is a great vocalist too, and Floor and Marko on vocals together complement each other perfectly. If you want to dive in deep to Nightwish live performances you might want save the other two big ones for later. If you're going to react to only a couple of other songs by Nightwish they shoud be "The Poet and the Pendulum" Wembley Arena 2015 (14 minutes), and "The Greatest Show on Earth" Tampere 2015 (20+ minutes). Please find out what these songs are about before reacting to them so you can make the most of them. If you decide to take the longer route, then here are my suggestions to your next Nightwish reaction: "7 Days to the Wolves" Wembley 2015, "Weak Fantasy" Tampere 2015, "I Want My Tears Back" Buenos Aires 2018 (The title of the video may say 2019) If you want to stick to Wacken 2013 then "Ever Dream" Official Live. In all of the performances mentioned vocals by Floor and Marko. Tuomas Holopainen a.k.a Metal Mozart, is the main man, mastermind, the band founder in 1996, leader, main composer, lyrics writer and arranger. Greetings from Helsinki Finland! Looking forward to more Nightwish reactions!
