Yes! “Mary Did You Know” was the first time I heard them. I was floored! They also have a live version, if I’m remembering correctly. BUT you you HAVE to react to BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY!!
Mary Did You Know was the first video I saw from Pentatonix, and it made me cry and fall in love. Sound of Silence made me fall in love for the 4,000th time
@@maggiereneemusic Yes. I knew you'd love HF harmonies, too. my favorite song of theirs is "In the Blood", a John Mayer cover. The song's meaning is enhanced by the video setting and their performance.
If you watch them sing this live on their Christmas special you will actually see Scott doing the base while Avi is performing his solo. You see Scott for several seconds and the best example you will find. Also you will see that they are just as tight as a group as the production version.
@@maggiereneemusic I'M EXCITED for more PENTATONIX videos I know you talked about vocal ranges but they ALL have AMAZING ranges and use them according to the song! Scott is primarily a baritone but seamlessly takes over the bass when the bass (Avi or Matt) have a lead! A LOT of people miss this! ..Scott also hits GORGEOUS FALSETTOS!! Kevin the beatboxer has a BEAUTIFUL tenor singing voice. ALL THESE PENTATONIX ANGELS ARE SUPER TALENTED and VERY LIKABLE!!❤
@@maggiereneemusic 😄👉PENTATONIX are 3 time Grammy winners PLEASE react to the songs that won them the Grammys: 1. Daft Punk 2. Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy 3. Jolene ft. @@ResilientBiscuit dude don't make fun of her she just didn't know scott can sing bass even i didn't know Scott sang bass until I heard hallelujah and avi kaplan was singing and I heard Scott doing the bass
They actually made a very smart arrangement decision in Matt's verse. You pointed out that he rejoined the harmony at the end. When it get's to the line voices never shared, there is a high note. They knew how risky it would have been to try and get Matt up to that note. So instead of taking that risk, they just put him back into the harmony and gave the high note to Mitch.
If you want to see how they are live, but not a "staged" television version of live, check out their "Pentatonix - Aha!, Singapore, The Star Vista" performance. Since you are classically trained, I believe you would appreciate the choral beginning that transitions into something totally different 😉. Whomever recorded the video really liked Mitch lol, and the ending will leave you stunned with what's he's capable of.
SECONDED, omg. I've seen them do that particular tweaked-for-stage Aha! arrangement (tweaked bc they ADD a bunch, nothing removed) in person, and jfc it's jaw-dropping Mitch and Avi content. And you get to hear Avi's massive classical background in both vocals and arrangement.
This is probably the best example of how they sing live, but if you like that, the entire season of "The Sing Off" where they got their start is on RU-vid. You'll get to see how the kids have grown up. BTW, Kirsten, Mitch, and Scott have been friends and singing together since high school.
Your reaction to this is already my favorite because not too many reactors give Matt his proper due for that bass drop. And I love how you stopped and gave every soloist their chance to shine and explain why what they did with this song is so brilliant. So for another PTX reaction, I really really really want to see what you have to say about their cover of Mad World.
Thank you for your lovely comment. Don't forget to set your reminder notifications now and hope to see you early in the chats this Friday for my FUN Premiere of a new reaction video?
Matt fits the group nicely. Different than Avi, not necessarily better or worse, just different. If you want to hear Kevin sing, check out Imagine (John Lennon cover). It’s spectacular. Also as Christmas approaches, do Mary Did You Know. Both are in the Avi period.
Thank you for your suggestion! 😍 I appreciate your support and hope that you will set your reminder and invite your friends to join me tomorrow morning for the Premiere of a NEW reaction video to Home Free?
They're all obviously great, but I agree that Kirsten is the one who has improved the most by far since the group came together. It's really cool to see it.
@@maggiereneemusic I fully agree with Shadyguy- I think Kirsten has lost a little bit of range as a trade for an over-all stronger voice. I noticed it in their first performances after she left Broadway's "Kinky Boots". While I miss her higher notes in the harmonies, I enjoy her solos more now than previously; sometimes it seemed like she was reaching for those notes and was bordering on pitchy. 🤫
A previous commenter on a reactor stated the three versions are three different perspectives - the original, warning of what's coming, the Disturbed version upset we didn't heed the warning, and Pentatonix says there's hope we can still get it right. Loved the reaction!
@Robertson Thirdly matt fill pentatonix with his own uniqueness,, and im not even dissapointed at all, so far all the song they release is awesome and loveable,
I second the idea of listening to their cover of Kiiara’s _Gold_ as it’s a live recording. To really appreciate what they do there you may want to listen to the original first to understand the crazy thing that Mitch accomplishes in this cover. Your emoji was 🤫
Thank you for your suggestion and for watching my video until the end. I appreciate it. 😁💖🤫 Did you also like my other Pentatonix reaction video and one to Home Free?
@@maggiereneemusic I love all of your PTX and HF reactions because you are able to pick up on and appreciate all the techniques and creativity in their arrangements that so many other reactors miss. Their use of dynamics, counter melodies, dissonance, and transitions are all masterful. To get a really good example of PTX's skill at transitions look into their mashups 'La La Latch' w/ Avi and 'New Rules X Are You The Somebody' w/ Matt. I agree 'Gold' is a perfect live video to see their "raw" talents. Another would be their Popspring performance from 2016, featuring three originals 'Cracked', 'Can't Sleep Love', and 'Water' along with their 'Evolution of Micheal Jackson' medley. It was recorded from the soundboard by MTV and kudos belong to the person running the sound because the live mic balances are perfect ( I suspect it was PTX's personal engineer).
Kirstin's focus was musical theater and it shows in her singing. She doesn't simply do a vocal interpretation of the song, she preforms it as if it is a character that she needs to bring to life. When she sings she brings out all the emotions of that character and allows the song to tell it's story. One of the best examples of this is their cover of "Shallow". Watch her eyes and face as she sings. She embodies all the pain and desperation of the song and brings it to life.
I appreciate how you only pause at the end of a verse and how you use the captions and pauses to limit how much you talk and sing over them. Some people pause the video every 10 seconds. I very much prefer your use of captions. I think it's a good technique.
@@maggiereneemusic um . . . I wasn't going to mention it but since you asked . . . no, not so much. One of my pet peeves is reactors singing over the band in the video.
True. An excellent cover. But.....if you want an EPIC cover of Mr. Grinch, you absolutely must hear the Small Town Titans version. Not even kidding. Its another rabbit hole to drop into!
Actually, you did hear Scott's low voice in _Hallelujah,_ you just didn't know it. Scott is a lyric baritone. His voice extends upward into the tenor range and downward into the bass range. When Avi took a solo in _Hallelujah,_ Scott was doing the bass notes in the accompaniment.
I just love how they all vocally support each other when one of them solos.. the transition before Kirstie comes in was magical...the key change was so subtle... Thanks Maggie - love your reactions.
Totally agree about Kirstin-I always say she has shown the most growth of all of them. I think she kept at it, getting additional vocal training/coaching.
@@Aviana137 And that's the way I feel also. The harmonies are literally (V)A.S.M.R (Vocal A.S.M.R). And you just don't get that with the Disturbed version (at least not me). But I have been destroyed for my opinion on it lol.
I’ve been a huge fan of PTX for years but my goodness it is so awesome to see their talent through the lens of a professionally trained singer who knows technical terms and can appreciate how good they really really are! Thank you for this!! 😍

🤫 I knew you would be surprised at Scott's versatility. Welcome to Pentatonix, where even the beatboxer has 4 octaves, seriously. Please react to their rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody, it will blow your mind! In a more techno note, they have a Daft Punk Medley that gave them a Grammy and sounds nothing like a capella, ridiculously good! Avi has some great solo work, actually all of them have (idk about Matt), Scott and Mitch have a band and a channel called Superfruit. Also, could you react to Superfruit Defying Gravity? It's funny and Mitch kills that song! I think you will enjoy. I know you wanted Mitch singing counter-tenor, but all I have to offer is female Broadway parts. HE KILLS IT!! Please, react to it.

Another one that makes you go "that's 100% acapella???!!!" is "Cologne" from their recent EP "At Home". Similar to Daft Punk, you double-take that it's not actually techno happening. 🤫

Matt Sallee graduated from the Berkeley School of Music in Boston. As a Juilliard grad, you must appreciate how impressive his vocal education has been. Of course, the real graduate school is the three years he has been singing with Pentatonix. Kirstie spent the spring of 2018 in the lead role of the musical, Kinky Boots. Singing eight performances a week on Broadway, as well as continuing in her work with Pentatonix from time to time was her very own "gratuate degree." (She had one year at the University of Oklahoma on full scholarship in their musical and dramatic arts program when she was recruited by her long time friends, Scott and Mitch.) And perfect pitch Mitch, well, he's been singing, on key, since he was eighteen months old. They're all great, no?
I've heard it said that Simon and Garfunkel's original was a warning of things to come, Disturbed's version was anger that the warning had gone unheeded, and Pentatonix version expresses the joy and hope for the future,, that perhaps the warning has finally been heard...or something to that effect.
@@maggiereneemusic I loved your reactions to Hallelujah and to Home Free - man of Constant Sorrow. You really should check out Home Free - Ring of Fire with Avi Kaplan, and Misty Mountains with Peter Hollens and Tim Foust. 🥰
They have all grown a lot over the years. Even matt that has only been with them two or three years. Not just in their ranges but also the technical abilities.
Matt is a graduate of the Berkeley School of Music in Boston. As a Julliard grad, you know how impressive that education would be! We're going into Halloween, and this group LOVES that Holiday! My favorite song of the season is TOO TOO CUTE! PTX SINGS on a holiday special, "What is this feeling?" from Wicked, and Kirstie and Matt, both of whom have that distinctive Broadway sound, sing a naughty duet together. Please don't be put off by the fact that there's a band playing somewhere in the background, Pentatonix comes through anyway, but the band is a necessity for all the other singers. Sometimes tv producers don't believe their ears -- that this group is actually better without backup orchestral accompaniment. YOU'LL LOVE IT, REALLY!
Maggie you are the most alive person I've ever seen, Pentatonix stunning, stunning reaction and thanks very much for making my day brighter and happier.
Thank you for your comment. Did you like the new Pentatonix video reaction I recently posted? Will you be there for my 195K Subscriber Celebration Live Stream tomorrow?
The thing I love most about your videos is how you have fun playing at being upper-crust and worldly, yet we can all tell that deep down you’re just as goofy, crazy, and down-to-earth as us random community theater schlubs. That’s Family to me. Great energy!! 🤘🏾

Months later and I'm here to comment and no one's gonna answer me because this is in the past, and I'm here in the present. Kirstin's vibrato is really fast, and her voice is really high and powerful, yet deep and rich. I just can't help but feel inspired by Kirstin, Matt and Mitch. Tbh Kevin is the one doing most of the work, lol.
I think one of the reasons Pentatonix is so successful is not only because of their great voices and arrangements, but the group always acts as superfans/supporters of each solo as if it were the most important part of the song... and they do that over and over for each part/solo. Always amazing with arrangement and support. Let that be a lesson to all leads about ego, and literally sharing the "solo" as a group performance. (Okay, Maggie made that clear near the end of her video as well. GREAT!!) Respect.
I think you have the best PTX reactions. You offer thoughtful analysis and know what you’re talking about but also don’t spend too much time doing it and you rewind afterwards so viewers can hear what you’re talking about. Love it
I enjoy watching you fall in love with this arrangement and performance. Your enthusiasm is wonderful. I could tell your soul just wanted to sing along. Cheers! 🤫
Maggie Reneé Is the “Hallelujah” new or just a re-released reaction video? I recall seeing one a few months ago from you for that song? I have the Home Free video saved to my “Watch Later” folder...and don’t worry, I will watch it, after all, a few of those guys are fellow Minnesotans!

More Pentatonix please: Bohemian rhapsody, Gold, Run to you, Wizard of ahhhs ( feat. Ptx). For better sounds use large headphones. So you can hear everything, literally. And thank you so much for making these videos, I learned a lot.
Scott's voice is SO versatile. They're all just amazing, and they have such a diverse catalog of genres and arrangements. Mitch's part in "Imagine" kills me every time, BTW. IDK if I heard Kirsten's vibrato until this song ... The fact that they can each solo so well and then blend is--to my mind--part of what makes them so special. As you must know, not every amazing singer can listen well enough to be in this kind of ensemble.
Kirsten grew a lot, vocally, since her time on Broadway. She learned a lot there and found new levels of confidence. And, I agree with Gretchen, below...check out their live performance in Aha! Singapore.
Thank you for another wonderful reaction video. It was very enjoyable and educational. Also, I love watching reactors who enjoy all the nuances of acapella. After Halloween there is their "Making Christmas" from Nightmare before Christmas movie, and Voiceplay has very interesting "Boogie Woogie song" from it.

I think 'Silent Night' would be a really good one for you to react to. Their official video is just them in what looks like a church, singing live in a semi-circle. There's no audience or anything to make noise. It's absolutely beautiful, and I think probably one of the best examples of them singing live with great audio quality. There are fancams out there of some spectacular performances but of course the audio quality is limited.

You're one of my favorite reactors to watch, and I watch a lot of them. Your voice is beautiful and you don't overdo it when you give examples... some singers and coaches go into crazy drawn-out runs to show their ability and it's often just too much. I love your expressions and excitement, it's contagious! I can't say anything about PTX that hasn't been said 100 times before, they're remarkable in everything they do but you, Maggie Renee, are remarkable as well!
OK...you're right on when you noticed that Kevin keeps it going. He's a musical genius...just do a reaction to one of his solo performances of "Down"...it will shock you !! BTW, great reaction !!
There are live videos of both of these. Hallelujah is on their Christmas Special. Sound of Silence is a bit from Jimmy Kimmel. Both are breathtaking. Their "Evolution of" videos are all epic! Also Kiaara's "Gold" is an amazing live session you would melt for🤗🤗
"Run To You" is another PTX favourite of mine plus anything from their original album "Pentatonix" - it's amazing that their own songs are as fantastic as their cover versions
A non-live PTX cover I recommend is a newer one, "When the Party's Over". ❤ Another one I recommend is "Imagine" (an older one) Everyone sings in that one including Kevin!
As with “Hallelujah,” I think this is probably the best cover ever of this song! Kirstin sounds fantastic, better than ever, and I LOVE her dress!! 😍😍 Matt’s voice is beautiful. I miss Avi but Matt is an excellent addition to the group. Did you notice the repetition and Scott & Mitch’s movements on “But my words (words, words) like silent raindrops fell”? (10:29 of your video) Reminded me of some of the Fifties and Sixties groups.

I am so happy you made a reaction for this. I love their version of this and it sounds amazing and I'm always happy to hear the commentary from people on them. Highly recommend their cover for "Shallow". Also if you're impressed with Kevin here with his beatboxing, try listening to his own covers, especially Marion Hill "Down". It's amazing and beautiful. You'll understand why he's marked as "Cello".
