Opera Singer Reacts to Post Modern Jukebox feat Morgan James Dream On | Performance Analysis | 

I recommend PMJ feat Haley Reinhart cover of Radiohead’s, “Creep”. Any PMJ, with any singer, is worth your attention. Many call it vintage jazz, but for me all good jazz is timeless.

Miss Jess - As you probably know by now, there are nearly a dozen reaction videos to Dream On by PMJ and Morgan. But for me, a retired woodwind ("twig sucker") player, your reaction, along with Elizabeth Zharoff's (The Charismatic Voice), stand out over all the others because you take the time (even tho you're fangirling) to break down what's what - such as the time signature change from 4/4 to 6/8, to her excellent diction, her breath control, Scott's arrangement, the crescendos and decrescendos, not to mention the correct terminology for what the cello player was doing during his solo! Those and other technical details that most reactors don't pick up on are part of what makes this reaction video stand out, primarily because so few of the others are actually trained musicians - mostly just music fans that have found a niche doing reaction videos to build their channels. You KNOW what she's doing, how she's doing it, and why she's doing it because you've had similar training and understand the techniques she's using. Plus you're not afraid to come out and say it, even if some of your audience doesn't understand what you mean. Give them time! So thank you for your reaction. For me, you've done an excellent job, and you get a standing "O" for it!

Jess, one more tidbit about Morgan. Aside from being known as a genuinely sweet person, she absolutely refuses to be "tuned" for anything she works on. She will refuse projects, before she'd allow a tuned performance. 💕😋

There is a whole lot to love about Morgan James, She is a Masterclass in Vocal Performance and a perfectionist. In an interview with "The Charismatic Voice" She abhors any pitch correction and prefers to use no compression on her microphones and says she Self Compresses.

Morgan James, when you just reacted to went to Juilliart and trained in Opera, she is also done musical theater and has been on Broadway. She had to take extra training to learn how to belt, as you should know opera singers don't train in belting

Amongst everything else, she really uses the microphone well. The sound of the "s" consonant used, for instance, to begin the phrase "Sing with me...", the breathy quality to it really adds to the intimacy of her performance. Jazz is really in her wheelhouse and it was nice how they adapted this great Aerosmith song for her. Her performance is unbelievable.

Thank you for your reaction and comments to "Dream On". Scott Bradlee is a genius at orchestration and giving a new feel to the "Oldies". I also recommend "Creep". The orchestration, and singing are equal to "Dream On". I'll also recommend you view "Royals" featuring Puddles the clown. He's much better than you'd expect and the arrangement has some surprises.

Morgan is the girl with a 100 party gifts and she still will have a 100 more hiding in plain sight, she's phenomenal. You did notice her breath control, that too is something i noticed the first time i heard her sing and found out.. its not a one-off action, she does this all the time. A cover she did with PMJ that still has my mind blown is the Maroon 5 song "Maps", Morgan builds up the song nice and slow (its a soul version btw) and when she finally gets to the power notes, she stretches them for, whats seems like, eternity and when she's done with the long high note... she carries on with a full line of text after that, without taking even the tiniest breath. I strongly urge you to check out more of her songs, with and without PMJ (and ofc the songs she did with Haley Reinhart) Haley and Morgan are two outstanding performers, both too good for the pop charts, neither follows the "popular demand" style of music making, these ladies are in the game for real music. (not saying pop music isnt real music, it is.. but most modern day pop is filled with average vocalists who sing songs that the producers already made and have shelfs full of, just waiting for the next mediocre pop starlet to make it a hit) These ladies dont play that game, and i highly respect them for that, they chose the hard route to success, and they put in all the hard work needed to earn that success. But because they are not supported by the big music companies, they hardly get any airtime on radio/tv. (but their popularity grows each day.... they both have a massive fanbase) Thnx for this react Jess :D PS Morgan also managed the impossible, she got Prince to give her permission to cover "Call my name" in person, Prince was famous for never giving permission to cover any of his songs, he occasionally gave one of his songs to someone else, but he never gave permission for a real cover... but he gave Morgan permission. That... that is food for thought i'd say.. prince was notorious in that regard, the answer was always no, no matter who you are/were.

PMJ and Ms. Reinhart's version of Creep is a masterpiece of performance and arrangement and you should definitely react to it. However.. I'd like to draw your attention to the PMJ cover of the Cranberries song Zombie, with Maiya Sykes delivering a devastatingly powerful and soulful rendition of the quintessential anti-violence anthem. It never fails to send chills down my spine. For something lighter, PMJ - Hannah Gill - Casey Abrams doing Crazy by Gnarls Barkley is a lot of fun and an analysis of Hannah's voice (mezzo? alto?) would no doubt be highly enlightening.
