Snarky Puppy is comprised of around 20 people at any given performance, though commonly touring with slightly smaller, around 13. They have a large roster that comes in and out to help with timing issues with the individual's other projects. They do occasionally bring in things like strings for album recordings, but for the most part, if you tour or record with Snarky, you're considered "family". Their last album brought in many of the members: they were using 3 kit drummers and 3 auxiliary percussionists at one time.

The thing she did with her voice at the end was actually her! No engineering. She’s able to sing two notes at the same time.

@@tilz5299 It is one way to do it but not at all what Lalah is doing in this video ; the timbres of the two techniques do not match. There's one guy with a tutorial on what she's doing (and reproduction of the sound) but I still don't know what's happening and I can't find what he's doing either, it's definitely super hard to reproduce.

SInce you liked Snarky Puppy, and this live format, you'll enjoy this: [ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L_XJ_s5IsQc.html ] live studio session of "Lingus". No vocals in it, but wow, it's special. Of note #1: Guest drummer (Larnell Lewis) subbing for their regular drummer - Larnell learned the song that day while on the flight over. Of note #2: Guest keyboard player (Cory Henry) who does the big solo... think of him as the Lalah Hathaway focal point of the performance, and just as mindblowing. A must-watch/listen.

New sub here, "Soprano Notes"... and I'm not going anywhere, lol! I appreciate the way that you dissect, if you will, the universal elements of great music (. _ .), aside from your own classical background of music! The nose knows... and (in your case, the "ears hear" clearly), those elements of art and music which matter)! 👏🏾👏🏾 Thank you for your "reaction offerings" to us... in the expansion of our own musical tastes and acumen! 🎼 🎵 😁

You should check out the Family Dinners albums! Snarky Puppy brings in friends and collaborators to sing and/or play covers with them. This song is from Family Dinner Vol. 1.

Oh, Jess! HI!! Nice video... but Lalah Hathaway can do polyphonic singing, which would have allowed you to double the length of this video trying to explain it... lol. Okay, edited to correct: Fairy Voice Mother is the one who reacted to this and replicated it somewhat... but Elizabeth at TCV breaks down another video and explains exactly what's happening... Also, Snarky Puppy is great, I sometimes put their whole concerts here on youtube on for background music... Great reaction, though!

I also play Snarky Puppy's "Lingus" album from time to time but I can't have it in the background when I'm watching on RU-vid. I follow so many of the mannerisms and interactions between the players and the reactions of the audience that I always end up watching virtually everything, every time!

Wikipedia says: "Snarky Puppy is sometimes referred to as a "collective." The band's current roster boasts about 19 members, and well over 40 musicians have performed with the group over the years and through the group's 14 albums." The group was originally a 10 person band, but expanded over the years. Basically they'd play with someone, and if they vibed, they'd keep in touch.

Damn, I'd never noticed the very faint drum hits during the first few seconds! Amazing catch. So, yeah, this song is a cover, but it's also heavily reworked. Snarky Puppy usually rehearses their songs, then play them a few times to a studio audience, improvising every solo, and then choosing one take to put on the album. If I remember correctly, when they're about to record a new album, they sell tickets to the recording sessions, but those are very few in comparison to an actual concert, by nature of the relatively small rooms they record in, and usually sell pretty fast. Their last album was released in late 2022, so maybe they'll start working on recording a new one soon-ish.

The latest Snarky Puppy album (Empire Central) won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album 2023. They call themselves a "collective" not a"Band." There are 23 or so members of Snarky Puppy and 19 of them play on this particular album: 3 (yes 3) drum sets (yes at the same time), 3 guitarists, 4 keyboard players, 3 percussionists, 4 horn and woodwind players, a jazz violinist and the leader who plays electric bass and bass synth.

Welcome to the Snarky Puppy rabbit hole… enjoy your stay. I, too, would LOVE to be a recording guest for one of SP’s recordings… even moreso to go back in time to when Corey Henry (keyboards) was still with the band. As far as other songs, may I humbly introduce you to the Jacob Collier rabbit hole… start with “The Flintstones Theme”… JC has won a grammy for each of his first 5 albums.

Thanks for posting--introduced ME to Snarky Puppy, too! 14:04--opera and classical musicians, take heart! As Barry Harris pointed out, "jazz is just the continuation of classical music". His teaching/workshop videos are mainly from a pianistic point of view, but I think anyone studying improv will be able to take something away. I love the expressions on his students' faces here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G1siDXQ92Nw.html

Hi Jess! It’s been awhile since I commented. Just life. But I still watch all your reactions lol. Wanted to comment that there is a YT interview Lalah did with New York Vocal Coaching 2 wks ago called “Overtones & Polyphonic Singing” where she talks about her ability to do what she did in the Snarky Puppy video. She says she doesn’t call it a skill (says it’s a quirk & that she’s an alien 😂) & doesn’t call it polyphonic or throat singing. It’s something she says she discovered she could do when she was 12 or 13, but couldn’t figure out how to use it or how to practice to make it better. Says there’s no one for her to go to to help her practice it. Only recently for the 1st time can she change the pitches & intervals. Interestingly she says she went to an Ear/Nose/Throat dr who put a camera down her throat & she watched it while she did it. She says while vocal cords vibrate together when u sing tones, part of her chords stay together & the other part moves. So that is how Miss Lalah herself explains what her instrument does. 😊 As always, thoroughly enjoyed this reaction! Looking forward to your next one. You take care.

That was Family Dinner Vol 1 and yes you can purchase ticket to go to the recording session which is usually done over 3 nights, 2 sessions a night where the artists record their songs. There is also a Family Dinner Vol 2 with about 10 to 15 guest artist. The musicians playing are all part of Snarky Puppy with the exception of 1 or 2 musicians. Unfortunately not sure when or if Snarky Puppy will be doing any more Family Dinners, but their last album was also recorded before a live audience, also their earlier albums/CDs were before live audiences in a studio …

Snarky Puppy: There are no vocalists on the song I'm recommending (LINGUS - 35M views) and I'm not concerned with whether you react to it or not. Do it for yourself. It's a 10 minute piece so I'm providing a 2nd opinion - a reaction exclamation by MrLboyd who begins... "Wait, I think this may be too much for me to handle. This is one of the best things I've ever heard in my life. I'm mad that I even listened to it.....I'll never get this experience back...I'm going to listen to this probably 30 more times before I go to bed tonight." His testimonial is directly linked here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ry6TkxgT6nk.htmlfeature=shared&t=823) They keyboard soloist featured in the 2nd half is Corey Henry. The keyboardist sitting beside him who isn't featured but genuinely shows awe and support for Corey's performance is named Shawn Martin. Shawn, who been Kirk Franklin's musical director, has five Grammy wins independent of Snarky Puppy's five Grammy wins. This ensemble's talent pool is so deep, Grammy winners can take a back seat. Or, as did happen on this recording, a replacement drummer (Larnell Lewis) can learn all the music on a transatlantic flight when an emergency kept the scheduled drummer from participating.

No strings,no effects. Just her voice. Many beatboxers use similar techniques. Dont try to understand it, and most of all, don't presume this is done witch some kind of engineered effect from some technision in de back. Have a look at the beatboxer in the link. Stitch is one of the users of a similar technique of singing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UilVHqQxe8Q.htmlfeature=shared

Wow! If I could only pick ONE word to describe that, it would be... dissonant. I have heard OF Snarly Puppy, but I've only listened to one piece, but was not thrilled. This was MUCH better! REALLY nice instrumentals all around! Lalah does a fantastic vocal performance with a very difficult piece! Not everyone (even really GOOD singers) can pull of scat that well! As a former trumpet player, I love the Harmon mutes! Great all around!
