Operation Charnwood - Normandy July 1944
With Ben Mayne
Part of Tommies Week on WW2TV
• Tommies Week
Operation Charnwood was an British-Canadian offensive that took place from 8 to 9 July 1944, during the Battleof Normandy. It was also hoped that the attack would seize Caen and forestall the transfer of German armoured units from the DUKE sector to the American sector to the west, where an offensive was being prepared. The British and Canadians advanced on a broad front and by the evening of the second day had taken Caen up to the Orne and Odon rivers.

Thank you for covering operation charnwood .I appreciate the dismantling of the myths from Steven Ambrose, Carlo D'Este and Max Hastings concerning the performance of the Canadian and British army in Normandy.

I was particularly stricken by mention of the stoicism and forgiveness of the French civilians for the "liberating" troops, after so much personal and devastating loss. Thank you for illustrating that

After all I've read about operation Charnwood, I don't think I've ever understood it so well. Ben's intimate knowledge of the terrain and research into the archives has almost presented us with a collection of works of art, paintings really of what actually took place there. Now when I read the dry histories of the battle for Caen, I will have his brilliant brushstrokes in my mind. What a remarkable young man you have brought us Woody. Absolutely brilliant.

The photographs from the Imperial War Museum are just haunting. The fact that you can clearly see M-4's in abundance makes me feel more positive about the eventual outcome than any photographs from the Somme.

I've had "Caen Anvil of Victory" for many years. In 1989 we took my in-laws to Normandy on Holiday and visited Caen but stopped on the outskirts and went no further. There was something in my Father-in-law's manner that stopped us. On the drive from Calais to Domfront he was very quiet and I didn't bother him. I never found out what he was thinking. He was in the Green Howards and landed on Gold Beach on the 6th of June. He returned to the UK and his Batallion re-equiped to go to the Far East. As they were sailing across Biscay news came through that Japan had surrendered. I believe the ship was diverted to Italy and he stayed there until he returned to England to be demobbed in 1946.

Excellent research and visual representation. I don't remember ever studying this battle except for the bombing of Caen and that was more about the problematic usage of strategic bombers in a battlefield situation. This operation falls into the forgotten battles of WWII column. Unfortunately for us too many great conflicts in Normandy fall into the forgotten battles grouping and it just makes you wonder how many titanic struggles of WWII we have just glossed over and not paid enough attention to, I mean it seems in the popular imagination there is D-Day, the fighting in the hedgerows, and then Goodwood followed by Cobra, and finally the Falaise Gap.

Comprehensive overview of Charnwood by Ben. Great use of war-time aerial photos with modern photos give a great view of the land and hazards. Agree with David O'Keefe in comments, that the Ted Danson history on Caen needs to be dispelled with. Bradley laid the foundations of the myth, then Ambrose & Hastings built the walls and Spielberg put the roof on it.

@marks_sparks1 Yes, the focus on Monty taking Caen on D+1 is ridiculous. Luckily in recent years though, a lot of the comments from the people above are becoming more and more redundant and outdated with new facts and research coming to light.

I'm just started watching, but folks seem to forget "the enemy has a vote too". As I learned over the years is Monty's plan was always to draw in the panzer units and grind them down. I'll let Ben finish his presentation. Good maps, so I'm hooked!

June 6 to Mar 6 45, tell me what was slow? Nothing prior to Kuwait was so comprehensive a beat down. Look at Italy, the Balkans, China,, any theatre- no application of force in the modern era acheieved so much in 9 months. Amazing accomplishment considering the general lack of experience in every phase considering the task and it involving humans. Simply awestruck by the whole thing considering all things since 1937.

I would love to do this as a job. As i recall Ben told me he used to be a police officer and decided to learn and dedicate his life to learning about history and in particular normandy. What a wonderful thing to pass your knowledge onto others and be employed to do it. Fantastic channel, love all the D-day chats. Until you go to normandy, i dont think you can totally understand how difficult it must have been foe the allies.

Ben does a masterful presentation, it would be an experience to walk the ground with him and Paul. I was struck by how flat the terrain is and only a small hill or ridgeline would have been a bitch to clear. I understand the bocage has been mostly cleared in Normandy, but it's such major part of story. Fantastic presentation Ben. As an aside to your future modeling career, maybe consider being a Chris O'Dowd double.

@stevengerard576 Interestingly, Ambrose actually air brushed the events of what happened during the Battle of Nuenen in Operation Market Garden in the tv show Band of Brothers. Liveth For Evermore covers this in his video *"Forgotten Heroes of Band of Brothers: The Battle of Nuenen | September 1944"*
@executivedirector7467

Well, as a US citizen, may I just say Ambrose is anti-reality and anti-honesty. He was a talented storyteller, but his research and analysis are silly. I never take him seriously.
@marks_sparks1
@marks_sparks1 8 месяцев назад
@executivedirector7467 Ambrose even denigrated the ATC pilots over the miss drops over Normandy, and even though there were huge potholes in his narrative, it got accepted by Hollywood. Thankfully, Mike Bechtolds' research has restored the pilots reputation, and they were doing everything possible to get the paratroopers on target.
