You know you’re old when a documentary of something you were old enough to watch on tv & understand, looks like what teachers would wheel into class.. VCR’s & box TV’s, dimmed the lights, & make everyone watch but the voices would put you to sleep in 5 mins 😂🥺
It is crazy how old this footage looks, though it seems even crazier to me that it's been 20yrs since this event. You think this footage looks old, go back another 12yrs and watch some footage from the first gulf war. Looks like it was from 100yrs ago.

I feel extremely old. My ex deployed to Iraq in 2005, and my best friends husband was KIA in Mosul in February 2005.. some days it feels like it’s only been a few years. Insane that this started twenty years ago this upcoming year.
"They [Iraqi children] suffered but they looked happier than most children in toys r us" really hit me. We take everything for granted here in America.
For anyone curious.. Shoshana Johnson survived. She was rescued by the Marines on April 13, 2003 after 22 days in captivity along with the other 5 members of her unit. She was Awarded A Purple heart, Bronze star, and Prisoner of War Medal. She suffered bullet wounds on bolth ankles, she was the first black female Prisoner of War in the military history of the United States.
good to hear, i was wondering what happend to them, she was only making food for the lads, then get taken as prisoner by the Iraqy, glad she and the other with her got saved... all the best from Liverpool England
1:08:18 That's me up next to the loudspeaker. Was Army psyop with 3/5 Marines. I could never forget that funeral service and the 3/5 choir singing. They covered Maj Nave but also being remembered was a corpsman named Michael Johnson who had been a member of the 3/5 choir. He died by enemy fire in an ambush early Mar 25 a few hours before the sandstorm hit.
I am from Iraq. The war is very miserable. I was 8 years old at that time. It was a very terrifying day. My father was a Su-24 fighter pilot. At that time, he told me that the American warplanes had completely controlled the skies of Iraq. I asked my father, “Dad, where is your plane?” He told me, “When you grow up, you will know very well where my plane is.” He continued, “If I had a fully equipped warplane, I would shoot down the American planes.”
My boyfriend was shot twice... Had to jump from helicopter that had been shot down and busted his knee. He was hit by shrapnel from a bomb to witch is still in his spine and legs ... He went back till he was to injured.. watching this makes me so emotional..
Hearing "Target Iraq" with that tune takes me back to the dinner table eating dinner with my parents and brother when I was only in the 3rd grade. I will never forget that tune.
I remember hearing about David Bloom's death. One of the few that honestly wanted to portray the events of the war as clearly as possible. Always in high spirits, always smiling even as bombs were going off around him. He was one of the soldiers. RIP you absolute legend.
Edit: nevermind, he WAS with the army. Got some wires crossed. Didn't realize he was with 3rd ID at first. I wasn't paying good enough attention. He was with Marines though. Not Soldiers.

Time flys bro.. I remember being in my 7th grade social studies class watching the planes his the buildings. I was so confused but when I saw 3 of my teachers crying I knew this was serious! After that, the whole country changed. The city I live in has a Army recruitment office right next to the high school. They would come to the school during lunch time and get people to sign up. I thought about it but I was too busy chasing girls and smoking weed to really make a big decision like that. I probably would’ve joined the Navy though so I could travel like my dad did when he worked in a cargo ship. He probably been to 50 or 60 different countries. I always looked up to him for doing that. He was born in Africa, lived in Netherlands for like 20 years and than moved to Boston Ma. I didn’t meet my dad until I was 4, he left my mom in Portugal but quickly regretted it and brought me my brother and my mom over to Boston. I remember the day I got here but I can’t remember a day in Portugal it’s so weird. I even remember the flight over to Boston from Lisbon Portugal. When I went back to Portugal I remembered smells from when I was a baby. It was like the smell hit me and I thought to myself “this is my home”. One day I will retire in Portugal, such a beautiful peaceful country. Just eating by the beach out there feels so special to me. Lisbon is ranked top 5 in the most beautiful cities in the world and I agree. When you see the view of Lisbon from a rooftop at night you’ll get goosebumps because it’s so beautiful. I tell everyone I know to travel around the world if they can. It really opens your mind up and you realize how young and small the US is.
You can be proud of him and of Bush and of America to have slaughtered a wretched people, reduced to poor devils that had been sent back to a middle-ages state of existence. You are the bravest that attack only the weakest, like Grenada, Somalia, Afganistan and a country under blockade for 13 years. That's a pity, a goliath that effects his power only with ants. I should add, however, that Americans are not all bad guys, but victims themselves of their far-right leadership. So, you'd rather ask you father this question: "why, dad, have you attacked and slaughtered a people that has never harmed us?"
Djaziri Hakim like goddamn who asked you? How long did it take to type that? How does it feel knowing that you wasted your time? Did you not have a dad or something? Jesus

I was attached to 3rd I.D. back in 2003. I was at the memorial, it was rough, but the worse part was pulling guard shift in the same vehicle that killed one of them in. I remember seeing little pieces of the vehicle broken off from where the rpg hit. I haven't been the same since.
Crazy how my dad nearly passed away from the exact same thing David Bloom passed from. RIP Bloom. I remember seeing him on TV back in 03 when I was in 3rd. I remember the tune the news would play at the beginning of a segment on the war. My back was to the tv at the dinner table while eating so I didn't see much but remember a lot of what I heard back then.
I was 8 years old, and I don't remember the events of 2003, but... We are in the south. It is safe. The joint forces were encroaching in the streets. Convoys and armored vehicles. The sound is very strong, and the sound of warplanes is very frightening over our house, causing fear. Thank God, we were not in Baghdad at that time.
Let me give you insight on someone who was in Baghdad when this happened. First of all all electricity was off, we had to light candles in the house. It was little bit cold so we had heaters in the house as well. All shops were closed, we had to bake bread on those heater to spare oil (ironically) As for outside, constant bombings, the feeling of almost earthquake when the humvees rolled around. Choppers all over the place. I was born 1996 so I didn’t understand that we were invaded. I don’t actually remember having fear over this until years later, when things escalated to “street fights” and when u suddenly had to cancel your day plans because word was on the block that a humvee was on its way and one of the resistance was going to hit it. Sometimes it happened, sometimes it didn’t. But everything was so unstable, we had “fighting days” when there were shots firing constantly for days, these were the scariest one. I have a memory of my mother going out in the middle of a gun fight to buy bread. It was in the middle of a 10 minutes cease fire. But while she was away they started running it down. Shit was scary. Thankfully she sent us to Sweden back in 2010. So we won’t have to live in the consequences of that war. I have a child and a job here and made a great life. Sadly she is still in Baghdad, updating me daily on what’s happening. It’s ugly.

I remember laying in bed with my wife watching the war on TV around March of 2003 and I was glued to the TV and news on the war. One night they were covering a fire fight and there were several enemy fighters dug in and then tanks rolled in and fired on the enemy positions and you could see in the explosion of the rounds bodies and body parts fly. I thought at first I was seeing things, but nope. I wasn't the only one who saw it. Crazy times.
It never fails to amaze me, how bad things can be. War is hell. For anyone interested, the most realistic portrayal of this you could watch would be "Generation Kill". Seriously, watch that, 7 part mini-series, shows what soldiers have to deal with, from locals, to the stupidity of command, etc. One hand does not know what the other is doing. War crimes, civilians being killed by mistake. All the horrors that become the normality of war.
War is hell. That’s why it’s called war. And what Bush should’ve done was not been a pussy. On Minute 1 Day 1, fly over there with thermonuclear bombs and carpet bomb the whole country. Level it. Then they can worry about fixing it themselves. Fuck em

Or as most people who aren't petty will call an M-88, "a tank." It's about as pointless as correcting someone in the Navy corrects people over the difference between a boat and a ship.
Tracks? Check. Armor? Check. Its a tank. It's not a main battle tank, you may even call it a utility tank, but it is as much of a tank as a Bradley, Sherman, or Abrams.

@@charlesanthony4693 Okay, first of all, calm down. Second of all, a tank does not have to be a *main battle tank* such as you just described. Many armored recovery vehicles are built on the same chassis as their main battle tank counterparts (I do not know if the M88 conforms to this, but I wouldn't be surprised), with utility additions rather than heavy weapon systems. Long story short, it's a utility/recovery tank.

I was 39 years old in Ramad at rifles base when President Bush announced end of hostilities. in my 3 deployments to Iraq I had been asked what I thought about the war. Sorry that Trump betrayed your people in Syria though, we love the brave Kurds. President Biden will hopefully correct Trump's dumb mistake and bring our trust back together.
I was in Iraq in 2003-04, we had a Kurdish man in the new Iraqi Army, his name was Haytham, I probably misspelled his name but he was a great man. The first day when the new recruits arrived, I was standing near them and a friend and I saw Haytham and we said “that one is not new to battle and he’s very intelligent” soon after we learned he was the only Kurd in the group of around 100 men. He taught me a lot about the Kurds and whenever we worked with a Kurdish civilian, they were very trustworthy and intelligent, I can’t say enough good things about them, I wish they were in charge of the country. The Iraqi recruits all had very low IQ’s, they behaved like children and couldn’t grasp basic skills. In my experience, the only thing the Iraqi army was good at was running away and removing their uniforms.
I thought the same thing. American mainstream media is state run now. These are the good ol days when journalism was a real career. Now, it's all for "likes", "clicks" and is all politically driven.
I was with Task Force Ripper 1st Marine Division, 1st Tank Battalion. ‘03. When I got home my mom told me she was a mess watching the news looking for me and praying that I was ok.
The fear.. that the innocent men, women, and children had to go through. Is what bothers me. All of this, without finding any weapons of mass destruction!
That’s just what the media told you. Marines who were there actually took pictures of some, with their disposable cameras, and they are on social media sites. Crazy how the media lied about it and the Marines have openly talked about seeing them.
Most buffoon blue on blue American assassinating clearly marked British troops with a vengeance, like they were enemy, is what I remember. US were maniacs in those days.
If they wanted to find weapons of mass destruction, they had their own. Why to look for it from Iraq when there thousands of nuclear war heads in the US ? If Iraq was punished like that ,because they were suspected to have it ;what's the punishment of US having the second largest nuclear arsenal?
I’m watching this in 2022 with the benefit of time - we didn’t know it was based on bad evidence and would soon turn into an insurgent battle lasting more than a decade. I’m not discounting the soldier’s on the front nor the journalists risking into the unknown - but - what a time capsule!
And I thought reporters were NOT to be part of the story, but rather report on what was happening around them - not to them. A more accurate title might have been, "How NBC Reporters Covered Iraqi Freedom." I salute the reporters - the editors - not so much!

The operators who actually went in and rescued Jessica were Air Force pj's the navy SEALs were the ones who the pj's handed her off to and the Rangers were the ones attacking a near by area. You can see that in the actual rescue video because you can clearly see a pj patch on rescuers and the navy SEALS were not wearing any patches and dressed differently and you really couldn't see their faces which was probably intended because they are a very secretive unit. And the helicopters that the SEALS put themselves and Jessica on were the tier special aviation the 160th knight stalkers.

In these operations, it’s very typical to attach PJs to a SEAL team rescue operation. It’s also extremely typical to have Rangers in charge of perimeter defense and security. It’s also typical to have the nightstalkers in charge of troop movement through helicopters.
There's this guy I used to work with that had the most gruesome war stories. One I remember, he told me how they were running checkpoint. This family got stopped & the wife kept screaming, complaining about being stopped etc. Then, she kicked the door open, hitting one of the soldiers. So, they opened fire, killing the husband, wife and their 3 kids; the whole family.
The story you describe actually did occur in OIF 1. The check point ( I heard) was operated by a FA Battery and yes, the entire family; husband, wife and at least two children died from a U.S. Soldier's own gunfire. Very sad when I heard it back then. Another tragedy from cross cultures during this campaign.
@@christopher5585 ye, this guy had just got out if Iraq. So, long ago I don't remember the details. His time there ruined him. He died from obesity a while back.

@sparrow360 Really?! THAT’S what struck you about this? Sentence structure?! Not the horror and trauma that happened to both civs and troops in that clusterf***? If you’re not one, i suggest you become an English teacher.
Judge Lazar.....my thing and I could be wrong....is how arrogant they are....like just because they sleep in dirt and eat shit MRE's they act like they're a solider too.....but I could be wrong
Anybody else notice at 1:30:57 the found Iraqi munitions boxes? They all had English writing on them. Some said "320 IGNITERS SAFETY FUSE PERCUSSION LOT SPE" then another set said "TRIP CONTRACT NO.74/AS/49 WOOD ROSE C/0 A.S.O BOMBAY"
Thank you for your service and for willing to sacrifice yourself for our country, it takes a brave person to be willing to do that. Your contribution was not in vein, your fallen brothers and sisters did not die in vein. Thank you, I will be eternally grateful for men and women like you.

Yea. When I went to helmand Afghanistan is 2012 all I was worried about was ieds . It's all we really trained for cause that's all it was. A mind war . Potshots and ieds .
I crossed over with 2/7 Infantry 3rd Infantry Division[March 23,2003}, and yes it was crazy. None of us knew what to expect. When I went back for the surge, it was a totally different type of situation.
I'm trying to study this war, and yet this video is more about how NBC loves NBC reporters. I think that one could say that 1) the media got played hard by the Pentagon, 2) it's revealing how much the corporations were part of the military, 3) discriminating perspective is totally lacking, 4) what the heck was going on in Brokaw's mouth, 5) propaganda totally sucks, 6) Americans seemed to grow even more stupid between 1990 and 2003, and 7) the Fedayin were a total surprise to the US forces, so kudos to Uday or Qusay or whoever dreamed that up. I remember at the time getting so sick of the news coverage which really offered no analysis at all. I don't remember how much I watched, as we had already detached from cable tv by 2003. I was very busy as an intel soldier way behind the lines in "cushy" strategic intel jobs.
I'm glad I can see my dad after he left me when I was 5 to go to Operation Iraqi Freedom it's been so long since he been to war but he's been I b the military for 23 years and every time I ask him about how was Operation Iraqi Freedom he says you wouldn't believe what happened
Ye man Iraqi Freedom man. We killed them all now they are free! =P Your dad is a hero fighting people with no technology and weapons. Good job man. Like hunting... but hunting humans. I mean they ain't ever seen bullet proof vests or similar... but ye fighting them must have been really hard work. Very honorabu
