The Operation Mincemeat true story is compared to the movie's romance between Ewen Montagu and Jean Leslie, portrayed by Colin Firth and Kelly Macdonald. We reveal what the real Jean Leslie had to say about the Operation Mincemeat romance, including the extent to which she and Ewen Montagu had a romantic relationship. The Jean Leslie swimsuit photo is also shown, which British Intelligence used to help create the identity of Major William Martin's fictional fiancée, Pam. The Operation Mincemeat love triangle is also briefly touched on, revealing whether Charles Cholmondeley (portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen in the movie) was also interested in Jean Leslie.

Ewen is my great grandfather, I wanted to say the reason his wife came home early from the war was his mother sent her a letter after she saw a the photo of Leslie on his desk and became worried. I was really looking foward to the film and got to see them shoot a few of the opening scenes but the embellished love triangle story element really felt unnded for me when you already have enough drama with the operation as a whole. For that reason I much prefer the musical adpation that is currently on in the west end in London

I found the whole romantic bit uneccssary and distracting at best. Uncomfortable at worst. It was too much of a central focus for my liking, it'd be one thing if it was as intense as portrayed in the movie but from what you're telling us it was grossly exaggerated

Thank you. Interesting to hear your perspective. Although I was aware of this plot and story, on watching the film this love triangle really felt wrong and distracting. Turned out it was very wrong. The reality of Ewan being so submerged into this made up character I think is more interesting on a humanity level, though I suppose would be trickier to work and easy to misinterpret. An opportunity missed perhaps, but the main point was the intricacy and brilliance behind what was a self admittedly macabre idea. There’s a danger that the misplaced love triangle element brings doubt to some of the general plot elements too. In fact reality is just as strange (or even stranger) than fiction. I hadn’t realised for example that they really did have a pretty carefree racing driver take them up to Scotland, and in fact drove over a roundabout and might have crashed catastrophically. The intrigue in the Nazi chain of command and how it could be influenced was another area that I suppose is challenging to represent properly in the storyline, but fascinating. Wish it could have been attempted as perhaps a Netflix series with a fuller attempt on the whole plot and nuances. What I hadn’t realised is that the identity of the dead man had been revealed in papers and Glyndwr Michael was from only a few miles from where I live. I shall have to see how that is covered in local history too now.

It's on my to-do list. Unfortunately, it's a long list, but that's one I definitely want to cover.

I’m a history buff and I love historical movies and I do understand using “poetic license” to enhance a story. But if you’re going to make a move and use “Based on a true story” or “Inspired by a true story” as your hook you have an obligation to inform the movie goer as they watch the movie which parts of the movie are being enhanced or dramatized. Maybe display a small green dot in the upper left hand corner to inform the viewer when scenes in the movie are authentic and can be documented as to being actual facts and a red dot when scenes are “enhanced poetic license” that cannot be substantiated as true and actual fact or were simply fiction added to make the movie more entertaining.

That's useful idea, but they would never do it for theatrical releases, because in most cases, the red dot would appear so much it would be too distracting. It would be a useful option for streaming or DVD releases, similar to the option of playing a commentary track.
