#Opeth #TheWildeFlowers #ToBidYouFarewell
In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to two different songs by Opeth. It's #DJDan week here, and he couldn't pick between two Opeth songs...so we're doing them both. These were released by the bands in 2016 and 1999. I really loved this tracks, even though they deal with pretty heavy emotional turmoil.

To Bid You Farewell has one of my all time favorite bass lines. The small touches in it, harmonics and slides, help add so much to the atmosphere. Plus... that entire song build up! Powerful stuff when added to the lyrics. Absolute banger of an Opeth tune. 🤘

Man I can't find a single person talking about Still Life. It's the point at which they leaned heavily into their progressive flirtings from earlier works. It's the album that concretely solidified them as "not just another melodic/blackened death metal band." Face of Melinda, Benighted, Serenity Painted Death, man, all of the songs off of it are so amazing.

If _To bid you farewell_ gave you "medieval" vibes, the early albums had *a lot* of counterpoint, where both guitars, and sometimes the bass, played different melodies on top of each other. It's what made me love them.

@user-po9sd8nq8v
@user-po9sd8nq8v 2 года назад
@Fangalatic Sure, that’s why Opeth kept appearing on black metal compilations up until 1999. Black metal is a wide genre, it’s not only about blast beats and tremolo picking, even vocals are not necessary, the whole genre doesn’t sound like Dark Funeral or some similar bands. Some bands don’t even use real instruments except guitar and they are still black metal as hell. There is no death metal in early Opeth. Okay, MAYH has some strong death metal vibes at times, but it’s still black metal most of the time. Do you really gonna sit there, listen to April Ethereal or Karma and think “yep, this is totally death metal”?Early Opeth fit black metal perfectly, even with all the folky and proggy elements. Not that it was that much of an argument since Opeth were blending a lot of genres together since the beginning, but calling early Opeth death metal is like calling their latest albums blues. Just no.

My recommendation would be Ants of the Sky, a real fun rollercoaster. Not a bad song on the album, but as I delved deeper into their discography it became clear that these guys are absolutely brilliant. Unique as fuck and intensely diverse. Been around a minute, but hit the ground running. One of their songs start playing, that's it. I'm feel hypnotized and helpless to not listen to it. Yesss (making a victory fist), another Opeth double feature. #TheDailyDoug - I hope we get more like this. If I could dream I'd wish for a full album reaction and ESPECIALLY an analyis of their latest album "In Cauda Venenum" from 2019 since there's so much stuff on that album that I'd like to learn more about from someone who really knows what he's talking about. It's Mikael's most advanced and experimental writing out of all the modern era albums mixing so many styles: less 70'ies inspired prog rock, hints of psychedelic rock (pink floyd) and jazz elements, some dramatic classical inspired stuff and so on. I believe you'd really find something to bite into with that album. His vocals is at the highest level on the album. The album is slightly more dense to get into than the rest simply because of some songs with more experimental/complex time signatures. Cheers

Love this 'buy-one-get-one-free' special offer on the Helverings this week. Maybe your bro would do a spin-off series? Great choice, I'm now hooked on Opeth too.

Love their earlier material…Orchid, My Arms, Your Hearse, Morningrise…Something about raw sound that just grabs me…Would like to see reaction to April Ethereal or When or Under The Weeping Moon…JINGER adopted much of their sound & structural designs…Tatiana copies Mikael’s vocal style & the band clearly incorporates much of Opeth’s sound into their material…

You definitely need to review Credence by Opeth. It's the song that Demon of the Fall starts playing into and, might I say, it is their acoustic masterpiece in my opinion. Especially when that tri-tone hits 😍

I have already mentioned it once, the album "In cauda venenum" from 2019, a masterpiece, choose what you want but it's really worth it. For me, the first two pieces in a row - (First is a tribute to the music of J. Carpenter, according to my amateur ear) Thx

That’s an interesting observation about his use of scales - I definitely think he writes largely intuitively, but he does seem to have a great natural ear for harmony. You did an early and a late song - perhaps a mid at some point? “Hope Leaves” from the Damnation record has some great examples of what you were talking about.

Why not Amorphis “The Bee” for a metal Monday? Doesn’t that sound like great fun?

A couple (well a bit more than couple) of suggestions: Villagers of Ioannina City (maybe Dance of Night or Millenium Blues), more Camel (Lady Fantasy, Stationary Traveller or really anything), Riverside (Second Life Syndrome or really anything for me), Comus (something from the First Utterance album), Ne Obliviscaris (Forget Not, And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope or maybe Eyrie?), Eloy (Poseidon's Creation or Reflections from the Sphere Beyond), Wilderun (Far From Where Dream Unfurl or The Tyranny of Imagination), Orphaned Land (Cave or maybe Halo Dies (The Wrath of God)). Would love some of them

I noticed you hadn’t done anything off ‘Still Life’. If you’re not too burned out on Opeth, or want to save if for the future, The Moor is a really good one to cover. Ghost of Perdition is another one off of ‘Ghost Reveries’ that is a great track! Keep doing what you’re doing, Doug!

I'm curious if your brother has tried to push you to listen to the song "Black Rose Immortal" from the same album as "To Bid You Farewell". I am pretty sure you would really appreciate it. It is a 20 minute song, but it really is pretty epic and amazing. It's comprised of so many different parts, and each one is unique. There is even a short acoustic section that they recorded, now I don't know if it was actually recorded beside a running stream or if the running stream was added in but it's unique sections like this that make the song "Black Rose Immortal" so very awesome.

If you ever react to an entire Opeth album, absolutely do Damnation, it's a clean, easy-going album with acoustic guitars all over the place. Or at least do the song Windowpane from it!
