Eh... they're just young idiots who caught Opeth at a different time of their career. I saw these guys back in 04 when they were putting out Deliverance and Damnation (about seven times total, I've seen Opeth live) and they had quite a nice setlist each time with individual good songs. The other thing that you guys should know is that THIS setlist was during a festival. Opeth has to take whatever songs off their ten or so record catalog and squeeze it all into less than an hour of live set time. So... whereas I've seen them seven times, FIVE of those times were headlining shows. When headlining, Opeth usually will do at least two hours of setlist stuff. Even when they did their clean live set back in '11, they still have a very diverse list of clean songs that they did, spanning most or all of their albums. I think I just got lucky to catch a band at their prime. If you're under 30 and complain about Opeth not being so death metal, then you should probably find a new favorite band.
Nothing to add! Opeth = Opeth which is equal to Opeth = Death Metal. Who calls himself fan must accept that bands need freedom in creativity. I follow Opeth as I love the band. No matter which direction they will go!
i've seen them not very long time ago in a show like 5 monthes i think they the growling were really good. i might also add that this is rock em ring and no one come to this show for opeth. usually for the main ones which are i guess metallica and idk the known one so opeth didnt take this show seriously i guess. but i do think mikal or michael not sure how to write his name. should consider working on his growling again. it might have something to do with steven too.
fafafak6 Well, that makes sense. But I think porcupine tree is a great prog rock band. And Mikael has always had a great infatuation with progressive rock anyway. I think it would have turned out similarly without Steven.
Everyone is moaning about his loss of growls, but no one notice how his clean vocals have improved throught the years. When you compare cleans for Still Life or My Arms to something from Storm Corrosion or Heritage there is enormous diffrence. I also miss a bit this dreary atmosphere of older albums, but new stuff is also great piece of music.
Girl with the yellow hat: 24:05 "ooh yeah, Welcome to the Jungle!" 24:25 "well, that's a rare version of Welcome to the Jungle, but I love GnR so I will dance anyway!" hahahahahah
Ryan O'Toole There are actually five songs and two of them are the names of two past albums. Their songs are quite long so four songs realize a fifty minute show ;)
+Ryan O'Toole Sadly, this festivals are like that. About 1 hour per band. But well, you can see a lot of other band, and hunt for Opeth's (or any band) solo concerts.
Aside from the death growls not being as powerful as they used to, I think the preformance was extremely tight and outstanding. Opeth always puts on a greaaaat live show.
What is with all of the "My god Opeth sucks now! What happened to Mikael's growling!?" comments. Opeth have always evolved. If bands don't evolve and change their sound over the time it becomes stale, shitty, and forgotten. Their ability to progress and explore different ideas while maintaining that melancholy vibe they have always had is why we are still talking about them. Bands like Ulver/Samael/Emperor all get the same wrap when they do something new that doesn't sound exactly like the old. Open your minds and challenge yourselves a bit.
There, someone who understands :) I hate it when people say this : ' If opeth changes so much they should make a different band and not continue under the name Opeth' The fuck? They are still the same band, but they grow, and i am glad that they dare to grow :) i will always be a fan.
What's with the "I will swallow everything they release"-attitude of yours? If you are surprised by the fan reaction after the last two albums you better stop being so stupid. See, I like Prog Rock. And l like Opeth, but I want them to do METAL, because that's what I liked about the band: The blend of heavy music with acoustic and jazzy stuff, the dynamics and diversity. They totally lost it with Heritage... well at least the new one isn't half-assed.
I love Opeth. I grew up with 60's as 70's progressive rock (my late father was born in 1950 and had good taste) and starting 5th grade I started listening to death metal. Honestly, whatever direction Opeth goes in, its really just great. I'm not sure if most people realize this, but Opeth's biggest accomplishment is that they manage to do progressive rock without the nonsense improv and failed experiment bullshit (believe me there is some weird shit that just did not work). They make almost 100% quality shit, and I think people should just appreciate that above all else despite if they have death growls or not.
d3tach3d You are absolutely correct. Growling is basically abusing your vocal folds. Growling absolutely damages the folds and will make it harder the longer you do it. He has such a beautiful voice when not growling that he shouldn't continue force growling.
d3tach3d Just saw them live at Brisbane (Australia) last night. Happy to report that Mikael was in full form, sounded great on both the cleans and the growls. Shame about all the amplifier breakdowns! ****ing Marshalls!
I love the way I can enjoy all eras of there career. I got there first album as a young lad and loved that epic style. Love them even more now, and man if I could sing clean vocals as well as him, no fucking wonder they do that more now.............as the man can sing for shit. Still as EPIC as ever, and still bloody brilliant live.
My number 1 band always !!! So many years and so many great concerts.. what's with the negative comments ?? Try it and see what you can do or shut up....
I think Akerfeldt's growl is objectively not what it used to be, but that doesn't diminish the great instrumental performances or the songs themselves. And the Opeth discography is gem after gem.
Being a deathmetal vocalist myself i can say that live growling and clean vocals bite each other sometimes. Sometimes my clean vocals are good, the growls bad and visa versa. And when i have a good day, both are great. On this concert Mikael's growls are not great, but at least he is still doing them in the songs where they are used and Opeth is still playing those songs!
People need to learn to keep their opinions to themselves. Sick of reading all the disrespectful comments on every Opeth video I watch that concerns their current musical direction. If you think it sucks so much, keep your shitty fucking comments to yourself and fuck off. Because literally no one, including Mikael gives a fuck if you think their new music sucks, or that his voice isn't good anymore. People are entitled to their own opinions, so its perfectly fine if you don't dig Opeth's new stuff... But that doesn't mean you have to come on here and completely slag Mike off, especially if you once considered yourself a fan... I personally have enjoyed every Opeth release, and I am anxiously awaiting the new one! I'm not trying to be an ass with this comment, just saying that people that were probably once Opeth fans should show Mikael and the others some respect and leave their hateful comments to themselves.
Come on. You obviously don't think that people need to keep their opinions to themselves because if you did you wouldn't have posted a comment on this video. Why don't you keep your "shitty fucking comments to yourself and fuck off"? Because you don't want to and you don't have to. This is a good thing.
Mikeoneus Good point. I can accept that. I just get pissed when 'Opeth' fans constantly slag Mikael off. If you don't like his new direction that's completely fine, I just don't like it when I see disrespectful comments toward Mikael. Everyones allowed an opinion, but it doesn't have to be disrespectful.
Thanks, Hannover Possey ;-) Godlike gig though the croud is kinda pour! Best-of playlist. Best band ever! No one does that crossover between Metal and Hip Hop like they do! Danke fürs Hochladen!
to me, mikael seemed more into the heavier songs than he has in ages! its just his growl cant keep up anymore. 20 years of screaming and growling will do that to the best vocalists. lets be thankful of what we still got from mikael! kickass songwriting and amazing clean vocals
Wow! I really enjoyed that...thank you to all who made possible me watching that this morning. I needed a little boost and my soul feels fresh and clean after seeing that show. While I have seen some incredible Opeth shows, and this one may not have been the greatest, this band always brings it. I read some of the negative comments and they amuse me. I am very much looking forward to Pale Communion, and I hope for a day soon when I can be honored by the presence of these great men. To see many of my German brothers and sisters enjoying this experience makes me happy. Good day to you all.
His voice isn't THAT bad. Not nearly as bad as a lot of you are making it out to be. It could be much worse. Mikael says that his growling technique deteriorated his voice, and that's why he sings on the new Opeth records. At least after hearing what it sounds like it makes more sense as to why he stopped growling.
I think a lot of singers eventually run out of steam doing vocal fry after a while... Also I think Akerfeld had some issue about in-ear monitors, too and wanted to go back to using earplugs... don't know if he did or not
@@jaketaz2848 devin townsend has gone on record saying that he basically screamed until he tastes blood, then afterwards a callus forms and that's how he survives a tour. so yeah, vocal chords of steel
Opeth music it's beyond than brilliant, no fucking matter if they are heavy or not so much. Any of their compositions are pieces of art that any could appreciate at any time. I hope that the people that complains about this video upload one as an answer to this with better own songs and performance. We'll see...
When you consider how Mikael's been stretching his vocals from the most brutal to clean for 20 years, I don't find it suprising that his voice is getting tired. But the previous albums remain masterpieces, and may still be enjoyed for many years. And just because the style is becoming less heavy, it's still great craftsmenship at the core. And Mikael is Opeth. Has always been to me. Great music comes from developing and moving in different directions, not settling. Opeth hasn't lost it for me. The core is still there, it's just the layers on top which are changing.
I like the fact that Opeth has evolved. If you want the same sound from a band year after year, then stick with Slayer. They have been playing the same riffs since the 80s.
I've watched other live videos from 2014 and his growls are much better than a couple of years ago (and especially this video). Maybe he was just off this day.
Great show, great playlist, great performance. The growls are indeed different, but a good performance nonetheless. Such a pity people started including Opeth in "cool to hate" list of stupidity. This is such a great and unique band, some people just like to hate everything that changes...
Love the set up !! Shows most sides of the Greatness THat is Opeth . The fact that they "Play from the Heart" inn genre mixing , Makes Opeth prog/balade/funk - surprisemetal Kings!
Mikael's growls sounds like an old possessed evil priest holding a sermon. It's definitely different, more talkative, and not even close to what he used to muster in terms of power, but it's still pretty interesting. I like it, somehow. But I suspect him not practicing it, or focusing on it, anymore will result in it degrading even more. Then again, I have no problem with clean Opeth. I loved Heritage.
I love his death vocals. They have a unique quality to them, and they seem to come natural. Awesome setlist, I hope I get a chance to see them play live some time. Please come to Maine!
All complains about Mikael's vocals are due to the mix of his voice, which is pretty much raw, without any effect. If you really listen carefully his pitch is good in general.
Really happy they went back to the Deliverance/Damnation sounds. Event though I actually like some of the pure death metal tracks and albums, always thought it was a shame that they weren't living up to their potencial, since Damnation is a true masterpiece. I've been hoping for a new change in Opeth for a while. I'm truly happy with Heritage, even though it is no Damnation. But then again, Damnation is indeed a masterpiece in progressive composition. I really like where this is going. And I honestly prefer Mikael's clean vocals. He has a beautifully haunting voice, that absolutely fuses with the mystic behind Opeth's genre. I support this change. Looking forward to hear more from their upcoming album. This was the first time I caught Opeth live. They actually played one of my favorite songs from Damnation and my uttermost favorite song from Heritage. Even got to hear Deliverance ! Hope to see them again.
Every Opeth release is worth the owning. Fans will have their favorites and non-favorites. We must allow the band experiment. We cannot box them into one sound. They can play songs from Damnation, Heritage, and the new Pale Communion and still kicks ass with songs like Deliverance.
