Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt reveals that buying vinyl records for cheap, looking for bands who looked like Black Sabbath, introduced him to Yes, Van de Graaf Generator and King Crimson, opening his eyes to possibilities beyond death metal. He calls that "the beginning of the end, you could say, of my interest in death metal." He also reveals that when they were recording 'Still Life,' all they were listening to was Stevie Wonder as just one example of how outside influences can subtly colour music and recommends others find their own musical identity too.
