Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt reveals that buying vinyl records for cheap, looking for bands who looked like Black Sabbath, introduced him to Yes, Van de Graaf Generator and King Crimson, opening his eyes to possibilities beyond death metal. He calls that "the beginning of the end, you could say, of my interest in death metal." He also reveals that when they were recording 'Still Life,' all they were listening to was Stevie Wonder as just one example of how outside influences can subtly colour music and recommends others find their own musical identity too. Opeth has always been Opeth and still is. The Opeth feeling within the music is more than growls or distortion

He's always telling this anecdote live. When they were recording Still Life and some interviewer asked them, what records they are listening to at the moment, he would always say "the latest Emperor and Mayhem". But him and Martin Mendez were only listening to Stevie Wonder actually :D

I agree completely. While I don't like his last few albums as much, I think diversity is great and he has had a lot of influences over the years.

Like Mikael, I started buying vinyl in the early '90s because I was able to find amazing vinyl for cheap in those days (since no one wanted vinyl then) and I didn't have money. I'm still not made of money but sadly vinyl is no longer the cheaper alternative, unless you're looking for used James Taylor or Linda Ronstadt vinyl, which can still be had for next to nothing. Many great prog rock vinyl titles have gotten expensive lately.

I hear ya. I'm a musician (half assed). I hate county music, but I listen to Jerry Reed and Leo Kottke. Leo can make one guitar sound like two and Jerry's is just funny AF.
