You got it - Morbid Angel is Mikael's favourite band/influence. This song and the whole Deliverance album is the heaviest/darkest shit ever recorded in E standard tuning in my opinion and it just never gets old 😍
The cymbal work in this tune is absolutely next level. I remember playing this for my uncle years ago and he said this is what you hear when you arrive at the gates of hell but in a good way LOL 😂
Idk why but I always found the vocals on My Arms, Your Hearse to be so much more visceral. I read somewhere that Åkerfeldt had a cold while recording the vocals on that one which probably made his growls sound so much more hardcore.
Falling inside again This nightmare always the same Still never enough Halting at the brink of discovery Moving into the darkness Leaking inside to cover up Dragging me down and under Entangled and undone at once Old memories I'm not in need but wish to know What are the tragedies The history behind the walls Pacing further down Familiar children's laughter Dissonant and out of time And their eyes are dead Watching myself in a pool of water Wearing the mask of a ghost Smeared all across my skin Rotten earth and insects Endless night Always preserving the calm Movement behind Bleeding animals in a field of fire There is no absolution Death is but a fairytale They are mere visions They are afraid of me A smoke is rising nearby Dust covering my coat Blend together to spell my name Pale, covered me with sweat There are no words left Sole provider of death Distorted faith in myself Human harvest burning Blackest pages turning Twisted perception come true Captured in dreams connected Staring right back Spiritual decay - Still seeking Frozen in time Mourn this departure - All watching Calling me back Closure to bleak matters - I'm leaving End of a search Coming of morning Calling me back Closure to bleak matters - I'm leaving End of a search Coming of morning - Returning
Thanks John! The Mighty Opeth. I know if I make it to 80 or 90 years old I will still be tapping my foot and breaking my neck while strumming my walking stick to Opeth! Lol.
Definitely my fav album from Opeth. And yeah remix version is even better. They played this song in Royal Albert Hall for Pete's sake! Mikael's a friggin genius! Rock 👊
This is actually the song that got me hooked with Opeth. I heard it on the radio (stream) a couple of times and after that I began explore their other stuff and the rest is history.
As a fan of Opeth, thank you for having them on your 'show'! Been following the channel ever since the dashboard reactions! Since I can see you like the 'death metal' songs more than normal, check out Year of the Cadaver Race - 'Bloodbath'. It had M.A. as a vocalist for 2 albums. You'd love it since it is a mix of USA/Swedish death kinda old school mix.
By the Pain I See in Others from the same album is a MUST ! It's everything you want with unbelievable brutal riffs and vocals and of course dark atmospheric space
If you listen to the remastered Deliverance & Damnation, the sound quality is so much better and you can hear everything so much clearer. Definitely worth checking out when you do more from these albums!
Mike said the making of Deliverance and Damnation was the worst part of his career with Opeth. He was angry with a particular guitarist who wasn't pulling his own weight at the time in the song writing dept. Deliverance is still their heaviest album. Good stuff guys. Thanks!
Been waiting for this one! It's up there with all of the other heavy ones. Unfortunately, I think you guys have basically heard all of Opeth's heavy stuff by this point. Maybe a couple songs left, but you've hit all the big ones. I think the remixed version has clearer vocals, so I think I prefer it. But that riff that starts at 6:32 is my favorite section of the song, and both solos are sick. If the heavy Opeth stuff is done now, maybe you guys can replace them with Periphery! Plenty of stuff there for you guys to get to!
The rabbit hole continues and there's a few more left. Name another band that has as many songs as they do and are as good if not better than the one before?
The only pro-shot live version I know of is the Royal Albert Hall, and it isn’t good, entirely because of Mikael’s vocals. The album version was the way to go for this one.
