MH you're a certified Madman now I don't know how you're not doing reviews in a straight jacket yet lol. The black and white, the cigarettes, the risky business sunglasses, the sideways knife in the pocket jokes. Yo I'm speechless. I know one thing, no other knife Channel can even try to copy this insanity lol. Carry-on bro
The Douk-Douk is one of my favorites for its slimness and strong backspring! I also really love the Opinel 8 and especially the 6, which is just phenomenal. Sooooo slicey!
Oh yes! No.06 is my absolute favourite edc blade. Cuts like a demon and disappears in the pocket. A lightsaber it is, uhm. Have a slightly moddified No.08 (carbon steel+walnut handle) too, but nah.
Most of the knife "reviews" I see on RU-vid these days are just sales pitches. Your videos are honest, refreshing, and entertaining. Hell, I didn't give a shit what you thought about an Opinel, but I still watched this video. Very well done. Your work is appreciated.
I use these videos as an excuse to talk about other things, make jokes, and poke fun about the stuff we're interested in. But I also try to include enough info in the reviews that a person can make an educated guess about ergonomics, aesthetics, use and quality and if it works for them.
You laugh, but Opinel actually makes a version with a foot-long blade. It's literally a folding "pocket sword". The locking ring makes it decently strong. Skallagrim did a review of it cutting tatami mats and stuff. It's comically humongous, but still cuts like a laser. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xLkd61qew5g.html
My no.7 and no.9 are two of my favorites and most complimented knives. They make excellent dinner knives because restaurant cutlery is typically shit. The Boker arbolito belt sheath fits the 7 well and I believe I can squeeze the 8 in. I'm sure if you sand down and reshape/slim the handle on 8 it would fit nicely.
Every home should have an Opinel. Most people use their Opinel to eat on the go, do light wood work, etc. It's way enough for most daily cutting tasks. The thin blade makes it a great slicer. Definitely get a number 8 if you don't already own one 👍
It was a sea of "this knife is great!" with that one comment saying something like "the blade is weak and flimsy". I can't gift nothing weak and flimsy.
You should have no trouble building a shelter with an Opinel, I did it. The tip is more likely to snap off than bend. The Douk Douk has pretty soft steel, the Opinel is a much better knife.
thats how my Opinel looks like. it was enclosed in a package of Fein blades for multitool. cause thats what you really need when you need a knife. anyway the handle was painted Orange. After a while in my toolbox it looked like trump: a faded Orange pointless tool , only difference, the Opinel was still sharp.
You lousy beatnik! haha great review man! loved the creativity. I've been messing around with the idea of making a more film noir style video but just haven't found a relevant item to review for it. By the way, what book was that in the background? Kerouac, Burroughs, Ginsberg? cheers.
I bought the No 8 when I was in Leon and carried it all over France in my front pocket , as it's so light it stays upright if next to a small wallet or phone .
Have one at work, have had it for thirty years, open boxes, cut plastic straps, had a stainless n°7 gifted to me by a french cookbook writer but lost it... The tip broke fifteen years ago. Have a number ten, good for food prep etc, good alternative for use in the woods as food knife.
Super cute! Yes, the guy, too. Just received the sandvik version from REI. I really enjoyed using it today to open soy sauce packets. I think it will come in handy and will keep it in my bag. Very light and simple looking with French flair. Abiento!
I have two Opinel knives in my collection. The No.8 is one of them. I probably use it more for kitchen prep than any other knives. Slices through onions like butter.
I had a blast modding a carbon Opinel as a gift, engraved, mustard patina, nail notch groove, brass lined lanyard hole. I want one for myself now. Heck, I can afford four.
I carried this knife in Afghanistan to use to build demo and such. Cutting charges and sheets of c1 and data prime boosters. Anyways long story short still carry it daily. I love it haha
I was immediately awe-struck and impressed by the avant garde knife review approach when I saw you go full-on Marcel Marceau... but then I realized my phone was just on mute... It was still okay with sound, I guess.
Advanced Knife Bro I can see it already... Benchmade Infidel - Silent, but Deadly. ... Except they're not remotely silent. But yeah... who cares, they're oh so tactical....
Revisiting my favourite 'toobers' Opinel reviews. My current collection of Opinels consist of a No7, three 8s (one is the 'Black' version), a 9 (I think), a couple of 10s, and my favourite fun knife, a No 13. I just had to buy the 13 because it makes me smile whenever I look at it.
I'm a Sandvik fan. No rust issues. Oranges, apples, tomatoes all have acidic juice, and if you don't get it thoroughly cleaned off, it'll cause rust or discoloration.
Great review. I have had these all my life. I view them as a "look cool eating cheese at an art show or picnic knife with a sweet lady". They are a classic, and will always love them. I would never want to fight with one, but one looks real cool pulling one out for a social event to eat fine cheese. Opinel are classy. I think i will go buy one from your link right now. There are many art shows and picnics in my near future. Plus, I just subscribed due to the fun nature of your productions. Thumbs up.
Subscribed! I carry my Opinel Number 6 every day. I went through a bunch of more modern ones, but this just works well enough for me. It's so light, I have often felt to see if it's actually there. Maybe a very small bit over an ounce.
Recently picked up a No.6 with an olive wood handle, they're a quirky little design, but so much more "friendly" looking than the typical tactical style. The super thin blade and nice comfortable handle makes for a lovely knife for carving wood with too!
I have one of these in carbon steel. Bought last year in Chatellerault, France. Wickedly sharp as bought, very nice slicer. The carbon steel does mark tremendously quickly, so take the sandvik if you prefer your knife in "silver" colour. The carbon model quickly sharpens on a regular kitchen steel though. I expect the stainless would also, but have but tried.
Got to be the stainless version with olive wood handle, thats a very tasty picknicker. They still got the most useful blade shape when you actually use them.
I use mine even at home to cut thin delicate slices of meats and cheeses, it's the best picknick knife ever. Plus, the unique shape of the tip is so very handy.
I have an Opinel No 6. Guess mine is not as big as yours. Handy little blade in the kitchen, but you are right they are not suitable for pocket carry. Great video! Thanks, Knife Bro!
You're such a cool dude! Had the Opinel 8 in both carbon and inox, and I'll take the inox when on the road, just easier to keep clean when cutting citrus fruits. Don't like the funny taste carbon steel leaves. Also, I modified the blade to a drop point. It's now one of my favorite all around use knives. Keep up the cool reviews.
I might pick up a bigger one in the future. The blade rusts fast... I left some moisture on it last night for an hour and it had rusted. I actually bought it so I could get a patina on the blade.
Advanced Knife Bro cutting oranges and grapefruit will give a nice patina in short order. Just wipe the blade off and let nature take its course. I used a cold blue gun touch up pen on my No.8. Gave a rich black color, although a little streaky. Not food friendly. Needs to be oiled afterwards. Dipping it in a bottle of cold bluing should give a nice effect.
Excuse me, I take my knife reviews akin to Seven Samurai, 3 hours long, and complete masterpieces! You missed your chance with the Higo no Kami, but I'm sure that making a three-hour video for that would have been torturous. Great job as always, and way to make use of that film (?) degree!
I thought your anomie was a bit lacking, and the filter on the cigs was just wrong (!!!) but hey, it worked for me, and I like my #8. I like my K55, too. No Maginot line between 'em, either.
I plan on doing a video about this in a month or two. Here's a few recommendations to get you started... My favorites over $100... Spyderco Para Military 2 and Benchmade 940. Under $100... Spyderco Endura 4, Opinel no. 8.
Can confirm that the Opinel No. 13. AKA probably the most ridiculously oversized folder you've ever seen, can baton lot of wood decently well. It has a foot-long blade.
I spent 30 minutes today googling how to translate those measurements... and 45 minutes last night cruising RU-vid’s music library looking for the right French new wave jazz bullshit for this video
Great review dude! Good to see the classics in with the campground commando knives. Maybe one day I can be a tactical forest ninja! You ever use svord peasants? I haven't tried them yet but they look like they'd be fun like the opinel.
I carry a n°6 (I like smaller knifes and cops are more forgiving with it in here in France) I just pierced the bottom of the handle to put a lanyard and the absence of pocket clip doesn't botehr anymore
Eating an apple with a knife like that reminds me of that evil hobo in "Dennis the menace". Please watch that scene and recreate it in a future knifereview :D On the review itself, i liked it! I`ve always considered Opinel to be knives carried exclusively by extremely old people, but after watching this video i might have to get one for myself, (a knife, not an old person). Keep up the good work!:)
7:00 Collector's Knives makes leather slips with a pocket clip but they are sized for Great Eastern Cutlery knives. I doubt even the largest would hold a smaller Opinel.
I blued my Opinel blade, to avoid corrosion, and sanded the rear top of the knife off, to create a cool, rounded profile, then stained the handle. Che Chic, Monsieur.
I would've been really impressed if you got Jean-Luc Picard to direct your film. I just got the number 9 this week so your review was timely. I got it just to add to the collection, not for any real use. If you haven't, take a look at Antonini Pattada knives from Italy. They look very interesting.
I was going to get one... since they are similar- but I have a MAM, a Case Sodbuster, and a Svord on the way. I plan on getting one in the future, but I’ve blown my budget on cheap stuff for the month.
I ordered a no 6 . I Just want a nice little well made knife to have in my backpack . Biking . Hiking. The beach . Cutting food . Small wood for a camp fire . I have bigger hunting knives that can kill a zombie. 😂
