Opinel, Old Hickory, and Mora. Three super high quality but inexpensive knives that every blade head needs to own.
@michalurbanful
@michalurbanful 4 года назад
And Victorinox. :) I know there are some expensive models but Mora has some expensive models as well. For me a Vic Camper, Vic Spartan or Vic Walker ... goes in the same category as Mora Companion, Mora 510 or Mora Classic 1 or 2 ... or as Opinels ... or Old Hickory Butcher knife. Great inexpensive stock. :) PS: When going old school I love to pair up Mora Classic #1 with Opinel #9. GO CARBON!!! :D

Great video. Thank you. I purchased my first Opinel knife about 7 days ago. So, I know nothing. But I do know this: Mine is a #7 stainless. It’s now my EDC, replacing a little red Swiss Army. I love it, makes me feel satisfied. It’s very adequate for carving. I liked this knife so much, 2 days ago I ordered a #8 SS with Walnut handle. Can’t wait to open that package.
@travistackett9359

I carry my NO 8 EVERY DAY. I have done everything shy of batoning this knife. In the three years I've carried it, it has become as synonymous with me as my personality. For an edc folder it can't be beat. I also know what's coming. "It requires two hands to open" No. It does not. If you're a knife guy, the you probably like to fidget with your blade. After about 3 days I could efficiently unlock, deploy, lock, unlock, close and then relock this tool. In fact I'm fairly certain that I have not touched my opinel with my left hand in months. It's tactically not tactical and an awesome piece of kit IMHO.
@DeanMD77

I agree. While I can't open it one handed lightening quick, it can definitely be done. This is probably my most used EDC knife. Does everything I ask of it.

Love the 9, perfect size for a pocket knife imo. And that's what it is, a pocket knife. I'd keep it simple, wouldn't buy no sheath. Most of the mods are personal preference, but one is really functional: wax the grip by standing it upright into a hot, molten (not burning) tea light, to seal the wood. I'm sure there's videos here on YT. If you don't do it and it gets wet, it might get very hard to open.

Thank you for your nice video and review! I have a few Opinels #6, #8, #9 (as a Dutchman I have a French family so I had to haha). Nowadays everything has to be quick and easy.....exactly what you said in your video about taking your knife out of your pocket quickly, opening it quickly with one hand etc, bothers me in this fast time. My experience is that you grab an Opinel much more consciously, you open the knife much more consciously, because if you do this quickly, you can cut yourself more easily ... with that conscious opening (and locking) you are therefore more aware of what you does and that is a plus for me .

I have the 9 great knife. sheath is an issue they don't really make one for the 9. Mine is a special knife to me it was the first Father's Day gift I got after we lost our son just before his birth my wife had his name engraved on it with his birthday and the phrase always with daddy. I would like to find a sheath that would protect the engraving and allow me to carry it everyday. If folk don't have a opinel knife get one. Very nice knife and the engrave the blade and handle so great for a gift idea.

Some objects have such an emotional weight we wish to protect them. I would suggest making your own sheath to protect it, leather working is a rewarding and cheap way to make a sheath for any knife.

Love my Opinel #8. I do have the modded handle from one of our brothers from the Netherlands. It is my backpacking/mushroom knife. I think it is just a wonderful pocket or backpack pocket knife just the way it is. No sheath necessary, although a beautiful leather belt sheath would not hurt. Or maybe a Birch Bark tube/leather combo. Let's see what you can do.

I've found the biggest set back with these knives is that the belly of the sharpened edge is sometimes allowed to contact the timber which is enough to noticably dull the edge, you might also notice this when using the spine while the blade is closed fero rod striking etc other than that there pretty awesome for the money

This has always been my exclusive use for my Opinels. My buddy brought an entire leg of ham to work one day several years back and I carved it up with I think it was a #7. I lost it that same week if not that very day; I think it flew out of my pocket while I was riding my motorcycle from work to our satellite office. I got a #8 right now but I don't keep it in my blazer pocket while I'm terror-assing around town anymore. It's got a nice bit of patina from some manchego I had recently, but oddly enough the mustard I spread with it doesn't seem to add any color. These things will run train on any meat or cheese you throw them at.

I carry a number 8 and a number 2 regularly and used to own a #5 which I lost while jogging. I have found that the #8 is a bit large in the pocket and it is really easy to maintain that convex edge, i have had no issues with the logo it seems to have been stamped in pretty deep. I personally took the edge off the corners on the spine near the handle to allow me to choke up on the blade without blisters.

I've owned the No.6 Carbon for 2 years now and carry it daily. I feel the same about the knife not being as fast to use as many modern blades. I did find that because of its aesthetics, it let's one maintain Gray Man cover far more effectively than other blades. I tried to use it as much as I could to see how well it held up. It takes an edge well and is still sharp. I even went so far as to carve a small (50mm) heart out of black ebony wood. Did a great job and didn't feel like I was working too hard to get the job done.

Just a note, the Opinel #9 blade length is under 3 3/4", #10 is over, if you want to keep it in your pocket in the USA. The #8 seems to be the most common, and fits in the pocket very well. I am thinking of getting the garden knife, it is #8 and stainless, and has a spear point instead of a clip point, which I think is better for chopping veggies and cutting meat, and maybe easier to sharpen.

I found a No. 8 with a leather pouch online for $11 + shipping of course on Amazon. I think what I am going to do is put 2 holes in the pouch and then add a leather cord through the holes, tie the ends of the cord into a knot and then put it under my belt loop and feed the pouch through it. It may dangle a little but it'll let me know it's still there. Just my 2 cents worth. Hope this idea helps someone. Great video! I subbed.

Onto my 3rd No8 (lost the first 2) paid more for the 2nd because it came with a belt pouch - well worth the extra $, the blade may need very little work to finish it up but considering they can be made super sharp very easily they are well worth the cost, I have paid 3-4x for knives of big name brands that aren't worthy to be called knives when compared to Opinel when it comes to sharpness. Everyone who does outdoor's adventure type stuff need at least 1 of these.

Opinal makes a nice leather sheath that comes with a sharpening steel. Has dangle lope for your belt. They even come in different colors.

I have a no 6 a little smaller but the perfect pocket knife dont notice it lives in my trouser pocket and i can open it one handed after a little loosening and some practice

The N° of the models give the blade length in cm.. N°8 is practical to carry around in your pocket every day N°10 comfortable as a table knife at hone N°12, N°13 is unwieldy to carry in your pocket, it's good for butchering and skinning a boar or hacking through light foliage Just one thing: they don't like to be thrown, that's the one way to snap the blade. Otherwise very reliable. These knives are a real treat, look pretty and so classic, can use in any setting without freaking anyone out, inexpensive so you can really use and abuse without worrying about what ifs....

I have a No 6 and carry it almost every day - it's almost a "dress" knife. I work in London and have to wear a suit but I can pull this out in an office or lend it to someone at a conference, etc and I've never had any raised eyebrows or questions. The only comments I ever get are along the lines of "that's a nice little knife". A No 6 is small but not impractically so and it's ridiculously light and absolutely disappears in a pocket.

I also carry a No6 as a dress knife. With a bit of work, the handle can be made to look very classy. Sand of the varnish, add a nice walnut / cherry stain, then wipe it lightly with linseed oil a few time and it looks wonderful. Never had a negative comment.

Flashlight holsters would be a good carry option if you don't want to make a sheath but case makes cross draw sheath

Ive got the 6.. had it for a while and i can unlock and open it one-handed. Sure u could do the same with the 9 with a little practice.

Regarding sheaths, belt pouch or just a side pocket of rucksack probably most suitable. I doubt it wld be primary belt knife anyway so just throw it in a bag

One handed operation of an Opinel is very simple with practice. You must learn "the knock", method.
