Very rare to see an opossum behave like this but I've witnessed something like it in the country. I heard one chasing another, growling with every trot through the woods, probably only about 40' distant. I also witnessed a large male attack and kill a young male that was in a dog house near my porch, might have been a male-to-male thing but so upsetting to see. They get along well with cats, have had ones as guests who eat side-by-side with the cats. I've been watching them since about 1988 and have raised a few batches of orphaned ones. They are not fighters and will lose to the quicker dog every time. Fella in the video would have done better to pick up the dog.

@@galacticcactus5530 Yep! Used to have 2 outdoor cats I'd feed on the front porch. one night caught a possum chowing on their food-also explained what was happening to the dead mouse heads my cats would leave me there. Few nights later, I watched through the window, the possum walked up right between the two cats to eat. he didn't care, just strutted up like he owned the place :) One cat just looked at him like what the heck are you, and swatted at him. Possum ignored him and went to eating. Cat just figured whatever and started eating too. Cats are now inside cats, but still put food out for possum-not sure if same one, or how long they live, think it is same one though. So other night, noticed a raccoon eating out there. So put extra bowl out, and was thinking wonder what would happen if raccoon comes up when possums eating. Literally few mins later, it happened. Raccoon is rather skittish, he slowly sauntered up, looking around. Possum looked at him, shoved his bowl away from it, kept eating. Raccoon finally got the nerve and started in on his bowl. Funny too, they don't chow down every bit of food, it's like they leave a bit for the other one. And, they don't care for tomatoes or green peppers-those got tossed out of the bowl lol.

Also, don't know if you by chance noticed this, but the shakier and more out of focus a UFO video is, the more popular it becomes. It adds to the excitement and mystery. I've lost count of how many shaky-cam "I don't know how to focus" UFO videos I've seen where the focus is blowing in and out massively and the camera person is saying stupid s*** like "Wow, look, it keeps changing shape!" Opossums are not normally that aggressive (except with other possums). I think that the similarity in size between the dog and opossum, as well as the dog's inquisitive behavior triggered the possum's territorial instincts. The opossum is a solitary animal. I have seen similar behavior in encounters between female opossums.

Opossums are amazing animals. I had the pleasure of rescuing a very small infant Opossum. It was the sweetest creature I have ever known. When I found her she was covered in fleas (which can kill a infant opposum) and very dehydrated. Once she was recovered and feeling better, we really bonded. She would slobber my arm or my neck and then rub her face on wherever she had slobbered. Marking me with her scent. It is called "slubbing" slobbering/rubbing. She smelled like fritos. She had a tiny lil pouch. She would sleep with me. I would put a hoodie on backwards and she would sleep in the hood on my chest. My Pomeranian loved her too. They would lay together and wrestle a bit and my pup would even lick her. I had named her Ellie. I didn't know that it was illegal to have them as pets (in my state), so when someone finally told me I was already so attached to her, but turned her over to a man that is liscensed. It was so difficult.. I cried for probably a good month. She was too tame to ever be in the wild, so they use her as a mascot for their rescue foundation. They will take her to the park on certain dates so that people can pet her and so they can be told how valuable and amazing these creatures are. She really touched my heart. I did end up rescuing another baby, a male about the same age, but turned him over about a week after finding him and getting him back on his lil paws with the special diet. You have to do a lot of research before trying to care for one because their diet is VERY important to follow or they can develop MBD (metabolic bone disorder) same disease bearded dragons can get, where their bones get soft and will deform their arms legs and face. So please if you find one, do not try to feed them catfood or hotdogs and think they will be fine. They need someone educated in caring for Opossums to feed them the correct diet. They have very short life spans. On average 6 months to a year in the wild. And up to about 3 maybe 4 if lucky in captivity. So please let them be. They don't dig holes, ⛔THEY DO NOT CARRY RABIES⛔ (their blood runs too cool) and they eat so many bugs and ticks. They are more afraid of you than you are of them. Miss you Ellie ❤❤❤

Possums don't carry rabies or any other diseases. The dog and possum here were just curious of one another and only sniffed and ran after each other. If there was something really wrong with this possum, he may have acted differently. No one was bitten or hurt here. It was just a cute little banter of different species.

Why on earth would you think opossum cannot get rabies?!? Please use caution when making public claims, because when they are incorrect, as yours was....that spreads ignorance and might end up getting a child or novice to wild animals seriously hurt or killed if they believe what you post as fact. I love opossum and think they are marvelous animals that get a plagued reputation from most people just because they commonly don't know very much about them....like the fact their version of chocolate is slugs...so if we didn't have these lil nocturnal helpers....people would likely be complaining over the tons of slugs on their property, gardens, et al. Plus, if you've ever done a necropsy on them, then you'd see how very polluted they tend to be from an array of parasites...because of cleaning up carrion. The bacteria levels in the mouth alone are outstanding....so if you do get bitten, you have other worries added onto possible rabies. I don't mention these facts to make anyone fear them in the sense to eradicate them...i say it in the sense of caution...they are wild animals and have their place next to ours....just give them space. While this video may seem cute, what happens if that opossum takes this behavior into practice while some child or elderly person is walking their dog who may not be as fast or ready to deal with a chasing opossum?---not real considerate to others, opossum included.

+Heather Lockard they very rarely get it it's a very large misconception
@heatherlockard9049
@heatherlockard9049 8 лет назад
+megan Mena ,my point wasn't how often it occurs, but the fact that it can and sometimes does....opossum are not immune to rabies...so somebody stating that they cannot get rabies is incorrect and since this is public and read by all age groups...didn't think it was right having incorrect information out there. So, the only misconception really was the fact the person i replied to said opossum cannot get rabies...which, is an absolutely false statement. They have an incredible immune system, also why they can withstand so much exposure (like parasites galore and various bacterial strains) which would otherwise very much shorten or kill most other mammals speedily....much like some of the bacteria found amongst the teeth/gum area of snakes and the komodo dragon...it is more dangerous than the physical bite....but, they get along fine with it...it aids them. I think you misunderstood me though....i'm not saying it is rampant....just stating that they can get rabies....i'd hate for a little kid to have read what that other person said and took it for truth, that they cannot get rabies...because we dont have radar for it in living animals besides some onset behaviors....so what if some kid got bit by one who was rabid and therefore did not get medical attention right away...thinking, cant get rabies...its a opossum!----then that's somebody's life is very tragically and painfully gone. People getting rabies and not being aware enough to get treatment is not unheard of these days and its an awful way to go..it is more controlled now, but still present. Same as bubonic plague....there are lots of people who think that's been gone AGES ago....it isn't...there are population outbreaks throughout the world....here in the U.S, it is prevalent in pockets of the south western part of the country....some parks having to shut down to control outbreaks. I just dislike incorrect information being advertised in sorts...it would be relatable to me stating here for all to read and maybe believe, that humans can live off ANY water source....then somebody would go chugging some good ole amoeba infested water, get some in their lungs and clickity clack they got some new neighbors renovating their brain....misinformation sucks. ;)
@meganmena377
@meganmena377 8 лет назад

Way too cute, I was walking my little Chihuahua mix about 2:30 this morning he saw something and went after it. He ran under a car and I couldn't see what he was chasing. Very relieved to see a opossum come out the other side and this time not a skunk! The last critter he chased got him a bath at 1:00 in the morning. The opossum didn't seem to concerned and just waddled away. The dog didn't bark or try to attack he was just having some fun with the critter he found. I'd never allow my dog to harm any other animal. He has no interest in chasing cat's for some reason. He never chases them. So far 3 opossums two skunks! The skunks always win!

I don't care what the majority has to say. This was too cute. If they weren't playing the dog would have been bloody in the beginning interactions. Both were just curious and playful. The opossum merely jogged around. It never appeared to be a threat. Animals have a way of communicating we will never understand. Rabies becomes apparent in animals fairly quickly, this one appeared perfectly healthy. In this particular environment, I'm sure this isn't his/her first encounter with a curious dog. Just cute play

That is an oddly aggressive opossum, but not overtly so, so it's not like it has rabies, but I've never seen an opossum chase after another animal before, and don't usually see them during the day. Almost seems like it was a pet at some point.
@janglur
@janglur 8 лет назад
+Tom Leeds It's not being aggressive at all, as it's not making any of the proper aggressive behaviors. Also pretty sure i've seen this opossum and neighborhood by a local breeder. Lastly, opossums cannot have rabies- their body temperature is too low and they have a specific antibody against it. There has not been a single verifiable case confirming rabies in an opossum in world history.
@TomLeedsTheAtheist
@TomLeedsTheAtheist 8 лет назад
Sin Vraal Well, since you focused on it, I did not say it had rabies, in fact I was pretty clear that was unlikely. I have seen a lot of opossum and the only ones I have seen in daylight have been woken up or domesticated since they are pretty much strictly nocturnal. But even the domesticated ones were far more likely to run away rather than take chase. AND YES, taking chase is being aggressive, unless it is intended as play and that animal did not look like it was looking to play.
@janglur
@janglur 8 лет назад
Chasing is not aggressive behavior for opossums because they do not do that when being aggressive. They sidle and sway their heads, open their mouths wide without closing, hiss and growl, and feign lunges. None of this was being done by the above pet opossum, so it is overwhelmingly clear that there was no danger here.

And you saw that the possum didn’t necessarily try to bite the dog towards the beginning of the video when the dog was within striking distance so I really think the possum may have been playing with this dog. People are saying possums do not carry rabies, however any mammal can get rabies. However, the chance of rabies in an opossum is EXTREMELY RARE. This may have something to do with the opossum’s low body temperature (94-97. F) making it difficult for the virus to survive in an opossum’s body. I find this particular animals lack of fear to be a huge red flag, besides the fact it's daylight, and opossums are nocturnal.

I'm a wildlife rehabber. I live on a farm with wooded areas and we have a lot of opossum and therefore I'm able to witness much of their behavior...This opossum is just fine. Fact: while opossums are essentially nocturnal, there are instances where you will see them out in the day and it's perfectly normal. Momma opossums forage for food during daylight hours because it is safer for them than at dusk or during the night when most predators are out hunting. So, if you see an opossum out foraging for food during the day, leave it alone, there is a 99.99999999% likelihood it does NOT have rabies and may be a pregnant female or one with babies. Other reasons you'll see them during the day- during cold weather (like winter months) when their foraging habits will change from night to day so they can forage in the warmer daytime hours. They'll also forage during the night well into the day when food is scarce. Generally speaking, when threatened, they will show aggressive behavior (growling, hissing, charging etc) and stand their ground, if that fails they play dead, but while some do fight, it's not considered the norm. However, the fact this one was trying to scare off the dog may just be more proof she is either pregnant or has joeys in her pouch. Other facts: Not only are opossum nearly impervious to the rabies virus, but have near total immunity to the venom of poisonous snakes. Surprisingly, they also are quite intelligent and can figure their way out through a maze quicker than other animals. They are very beneficial and a single opossum can kill as many as 4,000 deer ticks per week
