I've talked a lot about the different filmmaking elements which make Oppenheimer a great film to me. But I haven't done a video analysing the performance of Cillian Murphy, which I think is one of the best performances in a Christopher Nolan movie. So here's my essay talking about how Cillian Murphy internally and externally does a great job of portraying J. Robert Oppenheimer.
It's hands down one of the best on screen acting I have ever seen. I think it feels that Cillian has a rich experience of working on theatre stage. It's another level. I sincerely hope that critics won't snub him during the awards season.
His acting in the post- Hiroshima and Nagasaki speech scene was both some of the best acting I’ve ever seen but also one of the best scenes I’ve ever seen
Matt Damon and RDJ definitely deserves that Oscar nom, not Cillian Murphy. Hell, Emily Blunt deserves it too for the scene where she testifies despite the fact that Nolan placed her to the side to make room for his boyfriend. Because I'm sorry I got tired of staring at Cillian Murphy for 3hrs!
I have been a fan of Cillian’s ever since Red Eye, in which he was amazing as the villain. He is also brilliant in Red Lights, Peaky Blinders, Breakfast on Pluto, and The Party. Until Oppenheimer I was unimpressed with what Christopher Nolan got from Cillian because the parts weren’t meaty enough. I loved Inception, but there just wasn’t much to Cillian’s role. And then there was the bag on his head…what can I say!!! But Oppenheimer!!! WOW!!! Christopher Nolan made it up to Cillian with this one!!! What a stellar performance by Cillian!!! And I agree completely that it was thanks to the chemistry between Christopher Nolan, Hoyte Van Hoytema and Cillian that yielded such a totally magnificent performance. I also believe that the cast that Christopher Nolan used to surround and support Cillian, and the direction he gave them to support Cillian, helped Cillian to achieve the brilliant performance he gave. I agree with the comment made earlier that RDJ was also brilliant in Oppenheimer. And though on for just a moment, Gary Oldman blew me away and devastated me with what he said to Oppenheimer. It was like a kick in the gut. Oppenheimer is a film for the ages - as you said in an earlier post, clearly a masterpiece!!! Thank you for making a video pointing out some of the high points of Cillian’s portrayal of Oppenheimer. I hope and pray he gets best actor for this one, and that the film wins best picture, Nolan wins best director and writer, and that Hoyte Van Hoytema wins best cinematographer.
What i love so much avout Cillian in this movie is the subtle things, the stuttering, the shaky voice, breathing, the voice tone shifts throughout the movie, hand gestures, body language, its just something i don't think ive seen been done that well, especially in a biopic lead role. I also feel like hes not exagerating anything or goes for that "one" oscar nomination scene, he is completely into it for the whole 3hrs, and that made the character so much more relatable and believable, i honestly couldn't recognize the peaky blinders or scarecrow guy, he completely disappeared into j Robert Oppenheimer, and that fucking fascinates me and is what i think is oscar worthy.
The supporting cast was also excellent…Robert Downey, Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and many more. I so love Cillian Murphy’s movies (and in a way him)! I really loved his character in Peaky Blinders but he was phenomenal in Oppenheimer! While he is superb technically as an actor, I think he is most exceptional because he is able to reach in and grasp the essence of a character and express it outwardly!
This film could have, almost should have been a tedious history lesson for anyone not obsessed with this story(like me.) it takes exceptional skill and commitment to show a character’s inner life. I’ve never seen it done better.
Oppenheimer is an artistic masterpiece! I'll bet it gets Best Picture and Cillian Murphy gets an academy award nomination! Robert Downey Juniors performance was amazing too! I've seen this movie twice! I loved it!
I know we still have Leonardo DiCaprio in Killers of the Flower Moon and Joaquin Phoenix in Napoleon but Cillian Murphy dig deep into his role. It’ll be really interesting to see how it plays out during awards season.
I enjoy your video so much. Your discussion on Cillian Murphy's performance is v accurate & aptly describe how brilliant & realistic his potrayal of Oppenheimer is. We already love his performance in other movies like in Inception & Dunkirk & the unforgetable tv series,Peaky Blinders, now he did an excellent job in Oppenbeimer..! Hopefully he'll get the Best Actor oscar award next year.
I took his amazing performance as almost granted. The performance that stuck with me the most was RDJ, because I just did not expect his performance to be so amazing. Cillian made the whole movie incredible, I just didnt focus on it as much as I shouldve
Thank you for your intelligent analysis! I couldn't agree more regarding Cillian Murphy's subtle performance! I think he is one of greatest actors I've ever seen and I hope and pray that he does win best actor.Other performances may be more flamboyant but his, in my opinion, is the greatest ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Great video. Only one extremely minor point of clarification. Oppenheimer did not wear a fedora. He wore a pork pie hat, though a rather unusual one in that it had a broader brim than most pork pie hats. I know I'm being pedantic, but I like my hats. :)
Will defo do one on it in the future. Preferably before nolans next film. I have done a video on interstellar a few years back if you search it on my channel
Dunno how good of an actor he is and never seen his movies but since he’s Irish and bond is definitely gonna be Nolan’s next film, and that he looks very bondish, that’d be sweet for sure!!!!
Nolan next film will be a horror movie and it will be in IMAX black and white. Just like what Hitchcock did with Psycho, his follow-up to North by Northwest.
With the academy's new criteria for inclusion and representation can this film even be nominated? Im not hating its a serious question i have had since they announced there new criteria do historical movies like this stand a chance ?
The more & more I think about this film, the more I compare it to the Aviator. The way the government goes after Hughes is the same manner they try to pick apart Oppenheimer’s life
I doubt I'll ever watch a movie about one of the biggest psyops of all time, but Cillian Murphy as the lead might be the only thing that could ever influence me to attempt a watch. I am sure it's a well made movie/acted etc, but when this is considered to be biographical, or even true, I almost don't want to risk ruining the appreciation I have for Cillian. If you want to see him as a great character, watch peaky blinders.
@@soulpath1 Fallout, nuclear radiation, essentially nuclear weapons as they are according to the official story. The "test" videos, the fact that Japan was fire bombed in WW2 no atomic weapons were used, basically, the PsyOp is "nukes are fake" in short. But, really, the psyop is that all the powerful nations have the one button capability of mutual destruction, and if played right, they would never even need weapons attached to said buttons. But digging deeper. there's no proof of fallout in any nuclear disaster scenario, there's evidence suggesting the test videos at 3 mile island, or in the NM deserts etc, were all hoaxes. To explain it in a reply makes it sound silly, look into Gaylon Windsor, for starters. Drinking uranium, or any of the test video debunkings. Granted, If the movie is good, it's good, but there's clearly agenda behind it.
Two great acting performances in Murphy and Downey Jr. In an otherwise slow long disjointed boring film. Story was all over the place, and even though it ties up all the threads quite nice at the end, it took so long to get there I stopped caring!
I loved them both myself. But after 4 watches i think cillians is the one that just to me personally stood out the most. Taking nothing away from robert though, it was a fantastic, awards level performance
I like Cillian Murphy but dear. lord.. this movie solidified the fact that Chris Nolan needs to break up with him. He's good in the film but he's NOT as critics, people, etc are saying in reviews! He was way better in A Quiet Place.
