As someone who has been both slender with minimal, mindful effort and morbidly obese, I have mixed feelings about the show. It was interesting that Dr. Jen mentioned obesity not being a character flaw. I have repeatedly tried to convince people of that fact, only to hear the tired, unhelpful "calories in, calories out, just eat less and exercise more" chant from those who simply don't understand what's now coined food noise. Clearly, there is a disconnect for some of us that others don't experience. I understand in that it is difficult for me to fully understand alcoholism since I'm content with a single adult beverage every month or two. I took phen-fen years ago and recall how weird it felt to be satisfied with a small meal and not have a desire to eat again for hours. The effect faded within a few days so it wasn't worth the health risks for me. With the newer weight loss drugs, I understand when patients say the meds quiet the intense compulsion to eat. I was happy for the people who found weight loss drugs helped them escape the prison of obesity. However, I was disappointed that Oprah didn't push back more on doctors being consultants for drug companies. The explanation was rehearsed and inadequate making it sound like the doctors were strictly noble warriors with no financial incentive. I was also displeased by the dismissal of side effects as very rare. I know that people are often more likely to share negative experiences, but I've watched numerous influencers who tried WL drugs and had issues. I'm not confident that the research studies with carefully pre-screened participants are fully reflective of what happens with a large population of patients. The experts (who, again, have a financial interest) made it sound like education is an effective response to every side effect. That won't, however, fix say, the projecttile vomiting or uncontrollable diarrhea some have experienced. The great news is that Oprah's name recognition and lengthy battle with her own weight will help the show reach a wide audience and provoke discussion. Hopefully, some people will revise their thinking about the nature of obesity to see it as a disease and that many will enjoy dramatically improved health with the help of the drugs. On the negative side, I'm concerned that the publicity may whip up additional demand for meds that diabetics are already having trouble finding. Further, will those who can't take the medications find themselves further stigmatized because they remain heavy as those around them shrink? And how can we ensure that those who most need the drugs will get them vs. someone wanting to go from a size 6 to a size 0 or 2?

@@NamaGVida What changed for me was developing polycystic ovarian syndrome. I had never weighed more than 120 pounds in my life, yet suddenly gained 25 pounds in less than 5 months while eating the same diet, 4+ hours of dance classes and performances, two weekly swim classes and taking 3 flights of stairs throughout the day. @@NamaGVida I didn't see my initial reply appear so this may be a duplicate. What changed for me that started my challenge with obesity was polycystic ovarian syndrome that caused rapid weight gain despite an exceptionally active lifestyle and no change in diet. As the pounds piled on, I became self conscious about being Ina swimsuit or dance leotard and the food noise that others have mentioned began emerging where my rational mind knew my choices weren't healthy, but I wouldn't feel satisfied without a larger quantity of food. There were intense cravings for high-carb foods, particularly when I was stressed or in pain. What ultimately helped me lose 100 pounds was metformin, menopause to quell the PCOS and getting a new job surrounded by people who didn't care how much I weighed. Now my spine is collapsing from. congenital scoliosis and stenosis and herniated discs leave me unable to stand or walk for more than 5 minutes. My shoulder joints were malformed and the arthritis is so bad that they light up at airport security so I can no longer swim laps. I've managed to keep my weight stable so far, but the prospect of regaining it as my mobility deteriorates even more is daunting. I hope that you can find an effective way to deal with your weight!

Take a walk. Everybody is different. It doesn’t have to be about vanity. I went through my changes early and I gained 25 pounds. All the while I was working out, and nothing I did would take the weight off. Then I had two strokes in one day. After that I gained another 15 pounds. I’m lucky to be alive in the first place. When I was able to work out again I dropped maybe 18 pounds but I hit a wall. Then of course my blood work came back that I was prediabetic with an A1c of 6.0, with an under active thyroid. Of course my insurance wouldn’t cover any type of medication after all they wanted me to be a full blown diabetic as was the case with my real grandmother who died at 64 and my mother who’s still alive at 78. So I made the decision to pay out of pocket for Mounjaro. It is the best thing I have done. My blood work is looking great, and I lost 14 pounds in 3 1/2 weeks.

@vhopine3776
@vhopine3776 2 месяца назад
Every drug has side effects and, in dealing with chronic conditions, may have to be taken for a lifetime. My former boyfriend, a very slender man, developed Type II diabetes from being exposed to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. During our time together, he had a number of scary low blood sugar incidents. Still, the benefits of the drug outweighed the risks of a drug he had to take for the rest of his life. What is very disconcerting is when people who aren't overweight take the drugs to be even thinner. They not only disrupted the supply chain for diabetics and those whose health is in jeopardy from bring overweight, but not diabetic, but they exposed themselves to a significant risk solely for vanity. I understand to some extent. I've always had resting b***h face and as severe spinal issues have greatly restricted my mobility, my face seems to be melting downward despite keeping my weight stable. (Ironically, some report a similar effect from Ozempic, but I've not taken the drug.) If I had the money, I would probably risk a facelift because I hate looking like an angry shrew and having to constantly remind myself to smile every minute I'm with other humans so that I don't look grouchy and intimidating.

For so long, obesity has been viewed as a character flaw rather than a treatable disease. Imagine that you had an undiagnosed brain tumor that impacted your ability to control your anger. People keep telling you to get a grip & chill out. Your previously happy marriage and fantastic job are in jeopardy and you've tried meditation and counseling to no avail. Now imagine that the tumor was properly identified and that a drug can give you an opportunity to live a full, normal life. Any medication can have side effects. I’m on mounjaro and have had little to no side effects. Probably because I’m taking it for the reason it was designed for. The people who suffer from ill side effects are the people who don’t need the medicinal treatment it was actually designed fir. They’re taking it strictly for the weight loss which is actually just a side effect of the drug. It’s not actually designed for weight loss. Do the research before critiquing people. There’s a large sector of the population with disorders that perpetuate obesity and these medications can actually cure and or normalize them. Of course there will always be people who may not need it and just want to lose a few pounds, but that’s on them.

Actually outside of the US, these and other first generation drugs of this class were used for weight loss over 10 years ago. Bypass surgery was very rare outside of the US but they always included diet and exercise as you gain weight, you are at risk of insulin resistance and insulin resistance makes it hard as hell to lose weight. Insulin resistance is a precursor to diabetes which can take decades to develop. And folks need to stop acting like having diabetes type 2, which is highly related to obesity is somehow a more noble than the condition that causes it! The hype is targeting one single drug when there are several others that work just as well are on the market but not paying for celebrity endorsements and are not for use by folks that just need to lose 10 pounds for an event. FYI, the more you stop and start, even these drugs lose effectiveness IMHO. You have to keep using it to maintain the wight loss. The average weight loss they were originally used for was around 30+ pounds and medical conditions due to obesity like Hypertension and even Polycystic ovarian syndrome and the associated weight. And the reality is that some folks will not have obesity related issues until they pass 100lbs, others will experience them at 30 pounds. Prevention is better than the clean up.

I was bullied for being overweight when I was younger and when I look back, I see how lovely I was and not even overweight! It's like the media bullying Kate Winslet when she was a young girl just because she wasn't a size zero. Unfortunately celebrities get caught up in it - I wish we would focus on fitness instead of "fatness" - health and nutrition instead of calories! I was diagnosed with genetic insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Struggled with up and down weight since I turned 30. Cravings for carbs or sugar and if I gave in just a little my weight and cravings would skyrocket. Now that I’m on medication that prompts my stomach to create the hormones needed to digest foodstuffs appropriately I’m finally able to stay at a balanced weight. Cravings are normal. I have been keto since 2016, before it was a household name, yet maintaining a healthier stable weight was always a struggle especially as I got older. My doctor recently recommended mounjaro saying that genetic insulin resistance is likely the culprit and reason for my decades long struggle with food and weight. My father os type 2 diabetic and his father died from type 2 diabetes and kidney failure. They both likely have genetic insulin resistance which led to diabetes but the science didn’t exist back then to help them eat and digest food properly. It’s the worst feeling in the world to try to eat well, constantly restricting your food, never being able to eat like a normal person yet still struggle with your weight and subsequently your health. I do still eat a modified low/no sugar, high protein modified keto diet. I can also occasionally have something sweet without falling prey to out of control cravings. I finally feel normal again. I wish people had a better understanding and empathy for people who struggle with food and/or their weight, oftentimes it’s not within your control and your body needs help to control cravings, digest and breakdown foods the way it’s designed to.

There’s a lot more that plays into weight gain than excess calories. I was always very fit and firm and slender. As an avid runner, I could eat and grays all day long and not gain weight. But as soon as I went through a huge trauma in my life, and wasn’t able to run or exercise the amount that I used to, I started fasting. At least one 24 -36 hour fast per week. Followed by daily 17 to 20 hour fasts. And eating clean. But instead of losing weight, I was gaining weight. Cortisol, stress, trauma, lack of sleep, different hormones, fluctuating at different times of the month all play a huge part in your weight. If your body doesn’t have a way to dump that cortisol, the extra estrogen, the toxins, and all the stress hormones in your body… It will hold onto weight no matter what kind of diet air feeding it.

Did you even watch the show? One of the main points is that for some people, there is a relentless compulsion to eat badly and obsess over food, even knowing it's self-destructive. The drugs quiet that "food noise." I'm fine enjoying a single adult beverage every month or two. Yet some people battle a horrific compulsion to drink alcohol. Me saying "Nothing new here. Just don't drink" is dismissive of the challenge they face. Interesting, some taking these weight loss drugs note that not only do they lose the drive to overeat, they also notice a change in other compulsive behaviors.

Surely there's a happy medium ... especially we women KNOW when we need to lose weight to look better, and our doctors do and must continue to encourage healthier eating and exercise habits for a longer and better quality of life. But I do think the "fat shaming" is mostly because now people can hide behind a pseudonym online and say the nastiest things and the recipient "will never know" who said it. Let me tell you, as a Christian and Bible believer, I know we are all going to stand before Jesus Christ, the Judge of the Universe, and give an account for every word we've spoken (and typed), and that's a scary thing. "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32). As someone has said, in a world where you can be anything, BE KIND.

For some reason, only compulsive overeating is viewed as a character flaw. I'm not talking about someone using the drugs to Ho from a size 6-8nto a 0-2. She admitted that she hated working out. I personally can tell when Oprah walks, that although she's lost weight, her mobility is showing that she didn't do it by properly caring for her body. You can tell the difference. As someone who has been overweight and worked out, changed diet and got results, I understand plateau frustrations but wouldn't choose this drug. People need to consult with nutritionist, get the proper blood work done to gain an understanding of why some results are harder to achieve.

My only concern is they only spoke to one person who had adverse side effects. They did not reinforce what you must say on these meds for life, they did not address how these drug companies are making a fortune. There are many more poor people who need these meds but can't afford them. Like the opioid meds that were touted as a miracle and turned out a nightmare for many, but made the drug companies billions.

I agree that the presentation should have been far more balanced. I do think that obesity is a disease and I say that as someone who lost 100 pounds without drugs or surgery and has kept it off for several years. I have severe congenital scoliosis, severe spinal stenosis, neuropathy from cancer treatment, osteoarthritis from congenital shoulder dysplasia and have battled Fibromyalgia for 35 years. As my pain increases and my mobility decreases, the food noise is getting worse. I've kept my weight stable, but any loss stalled and I can understand the appeal of a drug that can quiet the intense cravings for unhealthy foods. It's daunting.

Sadly, people are dying from using these drugs. I've done quite a lot of research on diabetes and underlying research shows that what changes our insulin response is exercise - very little improvement is to do with change to diet or weight loss. The amount of exercise recommended in the UK is far too little to have the impact needed to change someone's insulin response - but when we do increase insulin sensitivity and our ability to manage blood sugar, it also really helps us in not needed to snack to maintain a healthy blood sugar. This is so important when we are pre-diabetic or heading in that direction, because it becomes increasingly difficult to exercise the less able we are to manage our blood sugar. In the UK we have a lot of foods that are not helpful, but in the US, processed foods are just much more damaging - from high fructose corn syrup to powdered sugar on doughnuts. We also need to exercise to keep our bodies healthy - our hearts particularly. Exercise is about so much more than weight loss.

Yes. I was emotional eating due to grief and put on so much weight that I am now prediabetic and actually qualify for this drug but I don’t want it because I don’t want to continue the lifestyle choices that are causing this in the first place. I don’t want to eat the food that is unhealthy for me regardless if the drug can counter the effects. I’ve chosen to do a no sugar, low carb, mostly vegetables and proteins lifestyle and get the exercise I need, as well as the fresh air and sunlight that I’ve been missing due to the depression. It’s super hard to make this massive change because of my mental health but it’s also exactly the reason why I have to make this change and not use a drug to solve the problem when the underlying reason is so much bigger than just being overweight and prediabetic. And I’m so excited to be taking this level of power and control over my mental health and physical state that I am actually excited every day when I make ANY level of progress like today !

Wow that's amazing! I totally feel what you are saying because my "slide down" was because of migraine - and now that I am exercising so much the migraines are so much better (although I just had a bad one because I'm fighting a cold and haven't been able to exercise so much!) I am missing all the endorphins of exercise but I feel like I am getting my life back and I'm really appreciative that this is the exception now and not how I feel most of the time. I've also suffered from depression and I was exercising, getting outside and doing therapy for ages before it finally helped - but although it feels slow it is massive work and I'm so glad I was able to get out of depression without resorting to pharmaceuticals (although I was close several times!!)@@MalissiaCreates

Exactly. Instead of telling the world to accept you, how about she start by accepting herself. If we’re all beautiful in all shapes and sizes, then why promote weight loss drug that unnaturally makes you Slim because you’re not hungry and have diarrhea etc. Maybe the whole lesson is in accepting yourself, your natural weight or learning better dietary and nutritional needs for yourself and exercise. Everybody wants a quick fix and then to tell everybody else to stop shaming them for that quick fix. 🤷🏼‍♀️

These meds did not work for me. I have an eating disorder called binge eating disorder and even at the highest dose of these meds, it didn’t work. I did not loose a pound. The side effects were sometimes awful, I said sometimes because sometimes I had mild symptoms and other times I was have extreme nausea and feel miserable for days, and I would typically only have a bowel movement once every 7-8 days. I’d start to feel scared when I had not had a bowel movement for 8 days- even with taking Miralax and colace but it usually came by the 8th day. I am very happy for people who are having success with them. I do have concern for others who have undiagnosed or diagnosed eating disorders who don’t get treatment and just use these meds. I wish everyone the best of luck with their health, and that you find the peace you deserve with yourself and your body regardless of your size. I very much appreciate and wish to echo Oprah’s message to “Stop the shame and blame!” Please stop body shaming and food shaming others. Don’t comment on peoples weight, size or what they eat. I assure you it will not help anyone and it is very hurtful. It is shaming them and shame leads to more harm like binge eating.

Also I wish someone would develop a solution for those of us who GENETICALLY seem to be low on the satiety hormone leptin (and that can be part of the reason obesity can seem to run in families, in addition to generational food choices - breads, cakes, cookies, candies, and other REFINED carbs - that lead to more overeating). It is NOT a joke when I say that it takes a Thanksgiving-sized meal for me to honestly say "I can't eat another bite." On the trimmer side of my family, though, those cousins have a couple of bites of ANY food (healthy or not) and quietly put their forks down and say, "Oh, I'm SO full. I can't even look at the dessert tray" and they're telling the truth. The only way this 75yo who has battled her weight for decades can get any relief from food addiction is to go mostly carnivore ("carnivore-ish") ... eating a diet that is mostly meat and eggs has calmed my desire for food SO MUCH although the weight is not dropping off me like much-younger women who have tried this program. (Search YT for Dr. Ken Berry's medical approach to this "weird" way of eating, and for Kelly Hogan who's been carnivore for over a dozen years, losing well over 100lbs and healing so many issues that had come with her 260lb weight.)

Drinking water throughout the day and before meals helps not to eat more than you should. IF is also great. Only eat balanced meals from 10am-6pm (cheat days 10am-7pm), exercise by walking, hiking, lifting weights (heavy) will help you drop the weight. Meds are not necessary people. You can do it.
