It is, as long as the ferromagnetic shaft doesn't have a notch. If it is axially symmetric (cylindrical) then the field will be reduced a bit but not deformed. The situation where you may have issues is if the shaft is not axially symmetric - then the field can be deformed, and this will have an effect on the linearity.
