if you are using OpenXR, you need the openxr tool kit and you can access the performance meter from inside the menu system. If you are not using Open XR, you need to open the Oculus debug tool, which is in the oculus instal folder, run that, and at the bottom, turn on the setting to display the HUD Performance option. This will overlay inside your headset.

Nice roundup, thanks! Just bought a 4070 super yesterday (comming from a 1070) and using a quest2. My problem now is the "R" in the iRacing monitor, rendering, but if I understand it correctly that is my CPU throtteling. Can't really decide if I want to go full out VR or not. My three issues with VR is that I have a hard time getting a nice and clear focus on more then just the center of the view, the smallish FoV in the Quest 2 and finally that it's more of a hazzle starting things up if I only want to run a few laps. Plus I get so much in my own bubble that it gets a bit weird since I have kids.. I prefer to have some sort of perception of what's happening around me if I'm not alone in the house. But the immersion and how cool it is is great!
@OlderGamersPerspective
@OlderGamersPerspective Месяц назад
The R value is the time it takes for iRacing to render a full frame, according to the write up, a full bar is one second. you can find the full documentation here: support.iracing.com/support/solutions/articles/31000133494-meter-box-f-key-in-game- Having said that, I have seen that activating some settings can cause this R value to display some weird results. My answer was to drop everything to zero, then bring things in one at a time, taking that one value all the way up to max, to see the effect it had. Then I put it back to zero again and tried a different setting. Be aware though, some settings need you to reboot iRacing to take effect, even though they are not in orange or with any indication that you need to do this. Some don't, like pretty much all the settings on the far left. The Quest 2 does have a small FOV that is in focus, I noticed this straight away when I moved to the Quest 3, which can make sim racing harder. I can understand that in your circumstances VR may not be the perfect choice, and I am the wrong one to ask about that as I have only ever raced in VR, although I hope to install a 4k TV to my rig and some point in the coming weeks. If you didn't know, I have a discord channel up and running (new this week), lots of knowledgeable minds there if you want to jump over and ask a few questions. discord.gg/vnVxQj3Wqb

I'm getting the same card this week. It was a birthday present, and I was very exited to finally upgrade my old Rift S to the Quest 3. After your last video, I was a bit consecrated that I won't be able to run iRacing at 90hz, since I'm really not happy with the framerate of my Rift S. I didn't know that I actually have to overclock the card myself. Thank you for that info!
@OlderGamersPerspective
@OlderGamersPerspective 4 месяца назад
Hi, I am sure you will enjoy your birthday present :) Note though that performance is a sum of all the things I did, not just one. With GPU Tweak III you can get a boost, but I found that it only gave me a performance increase when I optimised the task manager to reduce load there, stopped anything in the task tray for eating computer power, and also, this was probably the most important part, did a CLEAN install of the latest Nvidia driver for that card. Do these in combination, and you should be happy. Let me know how you get on.

@@OlderGamersPerspective Thank you. Will do! My PC is a pure "iRacing sim rig". I don't run any unnecessary bloatware. Not even Steam. Is there something windows related that I need to optimize via task manager?
@OlderGamersPerspective
@OlderGamersPerspective 3 месяца назад
Not so much taskmanager, if you have a dedicated sim race system, but you could make sure that Nvidia is not bloated by doing a clean install of the driver, and only the driver, and also take a look at HAGS in windows, or any gaming windows settings, which can cause issues. otherwise, in the task manager, just look for stuff that maybe you installed and forgot about, or stuff that you ran but don't need anymore. Always a surprise what's lurking in there.

I use a 3090 FE. My IRacing fps counter shows a constant 90fps on 90hz. However I do feel like stutter sometimes. Bitrate also at 500. So I’m confused I have slight stutters in the quest 3 although my fps counter says I never drop below 90 fps?
@OlderGamersPerspective
@OlderGamersPerspective 3 месяца назад
it sounds like you have micro stutters, which is not a problem I have seen, but some people on the VR iracing forums have narrowed it down to a bad driver from Nvidia. I would suggest going to the iracing forums, the VR section, and looking up the thread on driver issues with Nvidia cards. It might help you solve this issue.

Got my ram from 3200MHz up to 3800MHz and my i9 9900KF stable at 5GHz, i did everything i can to beef up my rtx2080super but after changing every thermal pad and paste it wasn't enough. Hi, yes, the optimisation of a PC can really be an addictive hobby. I was doing this ALL the time, up until a few years ago, and kind stopped as the programs I was using were not stressing my system. And then I stepped into the land of sim racing with VR and .... well, I am now where I am :) The 50 series does look interesting, but I shudder to think how much they will cost. Every year it's like an extra 200 for another 10 fps. Anyway, best of luck with the 3080ti, that's an awesome card, just make sure you have enough airflow inside your case.

Hi, thank you for the feedback and I am so happy that my video was of some help to you. Most of my videos are this sort of 'journey-man' experience, where I just document the sort of stuff that I had to go through in order for things to work as expected, in the hope that my experiences will help out others in a similar situation. The link cable I use, is I think no longer available in the same specs. The company did bring out a longer version, but that got poor reviews, so I think the rule of thumb here would be to only buy a cable from a company that offers a good returns policy as you will have to try it on your system to figure out if it offers any actual benefit. Could you do another benchmark with and without OC? I'm wondering if the boost came from all various changes you made or if most of it was from the OC alone as 10% is quite a lot for just that.
@OlderGamersPerspective
@OlderGamersPerspective 4 месяца назад
I believe it was a combination of the two, some tweaks, some boosting. The OC probably gave me something like 7%, and the rest was from performance boosts, but.... I think also it's a greater understanding of what each of the settings in iRacing actually do. Once you know what will tank your performance and what will not, and that you have to close down and run the app again to see any change, you can start to make an informed choice. So it's a combination of performance boosts and knowledge. Also, the new driver from Nvidia and the clean install I think really made a difference. Once I get the 120Hz testing underway, I will look at this again and run the tests again, with and without OC.

I think you will be just fine with the 14900k. I mean, you are on an i9 and I am testing on an i5, plus you have faster ram than me (I am on DDR4). SO I wouldn't worry too much. Mostly you need to figure out the USB connection side of things, make sure your headset is connected to a USB-C port, directly, not through a hub. Plus of course do the optimisations I recommend. Let me know how you get on. I will be really interested to hear what benchmarks you get from this system. Looks like it will be a monster :)

@OlderGamersPerspective Update. Im not using any of the stat overlays (dont even know where to find them) but the stock iRacing overlay never dips below 89fps, and is usually pegged at 90fps. I have every setting turned to max. Have not raced in the rain yet. Your PC might be bottlenecked elsewhere besides gpu.
@OlderGamersPerspective
@OlderGamersPerspective 2 месяца назад
@@Jwmbike14 Sounds like a rocking experience :) For the performance overlays, you can use the one in the Oculus Debug tool, and that can be found by turning on Performance at the bottom of the interface. More details are here in my other video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZO9A39eypbQ.html Currently I am not seeing too much bottlenecking, possibly the DDR4 ram I am using is not the fastest, so that might be an issue, plus the cable connection cord I have is over three meters, which isn't a great idea, but not something I can do anything about just yet. My plan is to eventually build a dedicated sim racing PC, possibly AMD based just to see what all the fuss is about. Glad to hear your system is maxing out :)

its great vid, about that fps drops to 89 you have to check it out if its no 87.2 because i had problem with it even with 7800x3d and 4090, tried lot of games and with headroom at about 80-100% in iracing or in other games there was still those 87.2 spikes dont know why, just reinstalled my pc to win 10, clean nvidia drivers without any additional features and more or less it is stable now, previously i was on win11

I did find myself that a clean install of Nvidia drivers helped a lot, but I have also seen on the forums that some people suffered micro stutters with Nvidia drivers, but I do not and I am on Win 11. What do you use to measure the 87.2 performance ?

Hi, yes I have tried out 120Hz, but I found that it drained my battery far to quickly, even when connected to the PC via a cable. I will look again at performance at 120Hz in the future, but at the moment, it's not something I use on a regular basis.

I am using a cable to connects to a USB C port on my mainboard. I am not using a PSU, with the headset drawing power (very slowly) from the mainboard.

Another question, in your honest view.. did you notice (graphic wise inside the headset) difference between 72hz and 90hz? I can’t seem to see a jump
@OlderGamersPerspective
@OlderGamersPerspective 2 месяца назад
I set the quest link software to 72Hz the other day to do some benchmark testing, and forgot I had done this, then later in the week I was racing along, without a care in the world, and when I looked at the fps counter, I realised it was displaying 72fps, and of course at that point I remembered that I had failed to change the PC app back to the 90Hz setting. So, for me, I can't see a difference. When I was at 72hz, I thought I was at 90, because that's usually what I race at, but I wasn't. Night before last I came second in a formula Vee race while at 72Hz, so I don't think it influences my driving in anyway, but I am old, so if you are younger, it might be that you will benefit from a higher refresh rate. That being said, I do tend to gravitate towards 90Hz, and therefore 90fps, mostly because I can, but if I am in a situation where I need more performance, crowded grid for example, I will flick back to 72fps. I never really bother with 80hz, but your milage may vary. Hope this helps.

I think you are testing on the wrong tracks. I always thought Charlotte was very taxing on GPU, but turns out, Long Beach is even worse. With similar settings to yours (at Long Beach) and SSA High always on I get 70-75 FPS even on dry :D But if I turn SSA off I get 90 easy with around 40% headroom. I use Pico 4 now instead of HP Reverb G2 ;)
@OlderGamersPerspective
@OlderGamersPerspective 3 дня назад
For me, most versions of Charlotte are okay and never give me any issues, but I guess it will also be down to how many cars are on the track at any one time. Not sure I've ever raced at Long Beach, but I will put it on my list of tracks to test. For me the two that always gave me issues with the 3070, were Okayama, and Virginia International. But now, on the 4070Super, with these settings, they look stunning, and are largely free from performance issues (internet connection issues aside).

@@OlderGamersPerspective Interestingly enough I don't remember ever having issues with VIR on my 3080Ti (maybe some small drops at the start/finish line before I started using OpneXR toolkit). With Okayama I had an issue after they updated it, but then I turned foliage off and started to be OK, later iRacing made a patch as turned out they had something rendering at Okayama twice and it was the issue, after that patch no more issues, I think 😅

Thank you so much! I bought a 4070 ti super and q3 (coming from an 2070 and Rift S, Q3 with 2070 was a struggle at newer tracks) and also have an 7800x3d I'm using the settings at 22:48 and it runs like a dream; total game changer. Its so clear and crisp, it feels like I'm just staring at a normal screen! On new tracks like Portimao I do notice that it dips below 90 fps at certain points, but then I just turn off the mirrors and all good Cheers!

I am glad you found this video helpful. When I have a problematic track, I tend to dip the refresh rate to 72Hz, which can solve a lot of issues. On better tracks I can bump it up to 90, although often I forget it's on 72. You might find that a better solution to turning off mirrors.
