wow! ashley is a GREAT host! GREAT questions. watched maybe 40 videos of hayden (this channel and his other channel) and she got more out of him in one video than alot of them combined. you should get ashley to interview jordan and have her rotate with jordan and hayden in the future. great work!
I'm really glad you mentioned the importance of sfx and music. Cutting up a song to fit timing or adding some sound effects manually to give some depth is something I do often in the stuff I work on. Sound design can't make the cut but it can absolutely legitimize it.
Love the way you guys addressed the Twitter questions! Ashley made it perfectly be part of the conversation Great podcast guys!! Also love how Ashley was not introduced as ‘Hayden’s girlfriend’. Really enjoyed how you both set up this podcast!
Glad you liked the interview. Ashley is our producer...and I suppose she is now also technically Jordan's understudy. It was fun having her on the other side of the camera. 👍🏻
This is my favorite episode so far! Part of it is Ashley's interviewing and deep diving questions! And part of it is getting to learn more of your story and influences!! Awesome episode :)
I think it's important to not only have someone who believes in you, but also is supportive in what you do. Hayden's message to those who may not have that was encouraging.
Hillier's advice and perspective is as always gold. I love the idea of juxtaposing a funny visual with serious music and vice versa. This channel has been super helpful for understanding what high quality editing should be. However, some tips are more applicable to vlog-travel-style content. I would love to hear more on editing educational or video essay-style videos. How do you tell a story about, for example, the history of something or someone's biography. Thanks 😊
Pro Tips: There IS a "RU-vid Cut style." 0) Watch this twice. Blessings to Ashley and Hillier. 1) Audience is looking for Efficiency. Audience is looking to click off from the start. It's not "retention", it's efficiency. Be efficient in the edit. Efficiency = No friction. Easy to engage in. Respecting your audience. Don't Beg the audience to stay. "Is this Easy watch?" 2) The Editor is a character in the video. Self-awareness. New Editors/Creators don't get this until later. 3) The "RU-vid Cut style." Make fun of it, them. Let others/memes speak for you. Efficiency Editing, retention editing but what are we doing? 4) Express your humor. Being it British and/or otherwise. 5) Spend More time on sound than you think. Silence is important too. Let events speak for themselves. Musical/Sound choices make feeling. Editing Music, make it shorter, finding important parts. Sound and Music tells you how to feel. 6) Process. a) Cut to the usable material. b) choose the cuts on the timeline. c) arrange. d) get a feel. e) sound. f) bang it out. g) finalize, the draft. h) wait. then do version 2. 7) Stylistic Editing: Jokes by editing. Dialog to motivate cuts. Pacing. Feeling. 8) Triangle: x) Emotion is a priority in every cut. Emotionally available. Story telling is from the heart. How does the cut feel? Getting an emotional response. Emotional intelligence. Discover what this is for you. Emotional maturity to express it. How do you feel? Let it effect you. y) z) 9) Get out of your own way. Nothing is as it seems. The way you think it is, It's not. The Taoist Flow.
There is a brilliant point, which I can't pin down, where this goes from being an interview with formal back and forth, to just becoming a flowing conversation. And I'm all here for it, because it gives this one its own distinct flavor which I cherish.
This dude has been my editing inspiration since I joined the folks at "Creator Now" at the start of this year. Granted I have not practiced as much as him in the field, mostly due to my focus on developing my journey through motorsports. But that said, I love learning from him any sort of way I can to improve my content and my understanding of what the best edit I can make for the stories I want to tell. It's been amazing learning from him and I hope to learn more from him this next year.
@@LegendaryLife Dude, "Creator Now" is the best! We work with other creators throughout the world and get some wonderful lessons from some of the top creators on RU-vid and TikTok. I first came in when they focused on shorts and it's been the biggest strength of my fairly new channel today. Although my long form has much to be desired, I know I have a ton of recourses and like minded people to connect with and help improve my stuff as much as possible. Many of them will become lifelong friends and do wonders in sharing a passion for content creation. Now is really the best time to get in because they're now doing an annual service at the same cost as 1, 6 week bootcamp. You'll save more while learning and earning much more than before. If you're on the fence about "Creator Now," don't be! Go and get signed up! You'll absolutely love it!
@@LegendaryLife Don't fret. If you have a means of saving around $300 throughout the year, I'd suggest that you do that. If not, then see if you and any other creator friends can pool your resources together to pay for it. If those aren't an option, "Creator Now" has a RU-vid channel and seven plus seminars you can see on their channel. All of which are absolutely free.
thank you for posting this. i actually started crying from the nostalgic bits of window's movie maker, first memories, and falling in love with the editing process.
Another home run. Can't get enough of this podcast. Feeling validated in editing technique, while being shown applicable ways of improving, is just so impactful! When Hayden talked about the *click* in his mind when he was going through Logan's Pokemon card buying spree, thinking, "OH! Logan is part of high society now with his millions, boom, and I'm off to the races" with the classical music to match that (kinda exaggerated) feeling you want. I LOVE WHEN THAT CLICK HAPPENS. It so exciting! Because you know EXACTLY what to do. Love it! Can't wait to check out the course in 2023. 😌 Peace. ✌🏼
I remember Watching NigaHiga's short 30 minute film about being an assassin and it blowing my mind with the quality for a RU-vid video, especially coming from how to be ninja. That's still what I think of when I hear "RU-vid video". Its crazy seeing the quality now on RU-vid.
I’m still an amateur editor and this is one of my best motivational channels to watch. I’m also a student of storytelling and a fan of Hayden’s method and by no means an expert. As a third party viewer I react with what I experienced from this interview: **If a ring hasn’t already been given it’s 100% coming soon. I totally expected a proposal at the end of the video.** In pure YT fashion I don’t know if that was to prove the point to poke at the creator from the editor being a voice in the final product, but bravo on that aspect. Three strong hints placed through the edit are NEVER happenstance as what makes the Final Cut is calculated. At the end of the day that part of your lives is not my business, but if that was an intended thread in the edit, she totally wants you to ask bro. All the best regardless.
yooo that "hi future Ashley" was so meta I love it HAHA, also wld love if u could have mack on the podcast and talk about the 10 million video, its the best video I've seen on RU-vid in a long while ;)
the goons editors do this very well is being told to make a story or tell a joke and it is very funny and entertaining to see them utilize their editors to tell the story of their gaming sessions
TomSka was a true icon. “Horse” still lives in my head rent free. Also…. ASDF movie. OH MY GOF Also… a little later but… Casey Niestat’s “Bike Lanes” and “Make it Count” videos
When you talked about using humor in editing I thought straight away you must be a Simon Pegg movie fan. You reminded me to rewatch Hot Fuzz but this time analyze it from an editing perspective.
This has come across as a badass video episode idea! Please hopefully get Ashley to interview Jordan like this as well eg in between seasons podcast episodes! Also could interview your channel’s editor Tyson maybe further down the line as well eg once fans had the chance to go through more of his editing efforts as the channel hopefully grows! Ashley and/or other channel members could be interviewed as well hopefully someday! Raza :)
I'm 3 months late but Goddamn this video was a masterclass and a half. So much was running through my mind trying to think of how I want my next video to flow and now, my mind feels somewhat clear
Mr Smith, when I listen to you talk about #editing & #storytelling, is like I'm taking a course... thanks for these informations you share #hilliersmith.... #bettadayztv
Just remember folks, when we were editing on windows movie maker way back when, older editors were thinking "wow the young generation has access to tools that can get there ideas going right away"--huffing and puffing they didn't have those tools when they were younger. I grew up in the dv camera and windows movie maker days as well--and was told constantly how lucky we were to have access to these tools. It's all relative. Yes, people today are showing impressive skills sooner--but i would argue at the end of the day, a tool is a tool. Creativity still has to come into play despite what tool you have. Story still has to come into play. A creator's voice still has to be honed. That just takes time and living a life to fill stories with.
American Beauty, shot by Conrad Hall with such stillness and restraint. One of the GOATs of cinematography. The man shot Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. BEAST!!!
When you say "we need a French new wave for RU-vid," I think you meant we (where 'we' is the world (in all of its wide, webbed glory) need a film/video/media movement based on a manifesto. And the quintessential example of this is Dogme 95.
How many creators rely on editing versus genuine substance...answer ...too many. My opinion is that the best editing goes unnoticed. It's like repairing a broken vase...you don't want to know anything was done
Shout out to Snatch! One of my all time favorite movies. Loving your channel and the two of you make a fantastic couple. Thank you for the excellent content.
Late night talk shows have had a history of showing/interacting with the producers/directors/stage managers/vision switchers/showing backstage workings from very early on. RU-vid draws so much from the dawn of TV without even realizing it, right down to having very forced product placement/sponsorship built into the content.
And also attempting to pass off very pre-meditated and scripted material as "authentic". Authentic to....trying to find a kind word here....morons? Is that a kind word? 😁
When you talk about learning to edit from films like Hot fuzz and snatch, they are some of the movies that I connect with which made me want to make films in the first place. The editing style of Edgar Wright is basically what made me think more about editing in films, it isn't just putting clips together on the timeline, its thinking about story and sound more then just learning after effects. Also with the hardrive full of sound effects. Made me think should I start doing that? Will this save me time in the future? Is this viable? But my real question is. Should I?
LOL great Pod cast. Lost it when it occurs to Hayden realises that having a back up for his 40K hard drive might be a good idea! 🤣🤣. Ashley don't let him play with Bit Coin or you will never get a ring!Stay safe, have fun! 👊🍻🎅🎄
Thank you for saying " give them paris" dude really i am going to deep into learning vfx to make things look flashy add stupid things and i found out that it's not me it's not my style. I don't like videos which goes like we are here jump cut hahah jump cat blah blah man wtf and then i went to watch 1930s movies and i found out that. "THIS IS CINEMA" city lights opened my eyes it's a movie. I got emotional at the end of 33 rd minute. love you haden and editing podcast❣️
For young creators out there, fourth wall breaking where the editor or animator makes fun of a character of a shot has been around for a very long time in cinema. Type in "Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck vs Cartoonist - Funny moments" to check out some clips. In the end we have a laundry list of things we can pull from the past. Don't be afraid to put your own spin on things. Wheels are made to ride on--you don't have to re-invent them all the time.
Love you guys. Lol I have 5+ channels and edit at least one video every day. Hillier has been one of my largest inspirations. Not on this drone channel lol here I just break things.
