----- DESCRIPTION -----
Hey everyone Dale here with Pacific Sun Technologies. I feel that I’ve talked a lot on battery storage options and solar panel manufactures in recent weeks, but I haven’t talked about solar inverter options because with that you can’t convert the DC power of your solar panels to AC power that everything in your home runs off of.
So, todays video is an important one and it’ll help you decide which is best for your situation and wallet. But before I get into it, please be sure to subscribe to the channel, it only takes a second to click that button down below and while you’re at it hit that bell icon too. That way you’ll receive notifications on future videos like this one. And if you’re someone that’s in our area of Southern California don’t forget to visit us online to receive a free solar quote, you could be over paying for your energy, and a competing bid never hurts.

Hi Dale, thank you for the informative video. I'm wondering if you could share your thoughts on the latest Solar Edge and Enphase Q3 reports - it appears Solar Edge is citing is headwinds and weakness in Q4, whereas Enphase is citing strength. Solar Edge is citing strength in Europe, but it appears their North American business is facing headwinds. Why do you think this is the case? Also, if you think about your orders over the last 3/next 3 months, is it more weighted towards Solar Edge or Enphase? - thank you!

Great video! however I will take the micro inverter route any day of the week. Easy to upgrade and expand and most of all no central point failure. I love the fact that each panel has its own inverter and if the inverter fails my whole system does not go down. Easy to note is that the micro inverter takes the guess work out of your project for expanding later. Yes I know you can wire string inverters together however I can gain more panels and micro inverters vs the cost of another string inverter and added panel cost.

Pacific Sun Tech - At the end of the video you said "if you have a larger system like an 8kW or 9kW solar system, you'd likely pair it with the 7kW inverter or the 7.6kW inverter from SolarEdge". Why would you pair a larger solar system with a smaller inverter? Is that where the inverter tops out?
@DavinciDME
@DavinciDME 4 года назад
This is usually because the panels don't produce near the full output throughout the full day. The larger output panels produce closer to the full inverter kW for more of the day making the 'actual' output of the panels a better match to inverter.

The IQ7 is good for that module, the extra cost for the IQ7A probably won't be worth. If you were using the NeON R LG Solar panels that offer 365 or 375 watts then I would say absolutely. But the NeON2 will likely never achieve the STC 350 rating and rather hit consistent the NOTC rating 261.

LG350’s and Enphase IQ7+ are a great fit. Each panel can produce up to 2.35kw per day in clear skies in May. Enphase will also help you panels last longer due to the low voltage conversion. No single point of failure! From a 10 yr all brands Solar a field technician Single point of failure systems result in a minimum 4 weeks down time... solar Edge requires a minimum voltage so 2 optimizers down could possibly mean an entire string is down

@@dalerolph Only if the panel side fails (solar panel or optimizer). If the power optimizer fails open-circuit on the high-voltage side, the whole string goes down. Of course, a failure of the main inverter also brings the whole system down. SolarEdge definitely lower cost, but suffers from many potential points of failure that can result in the loss of much more than 1 panel (unlike micro-inverters). Would be good to compare real world failure rates of both, and impact on system when something fails.

Yes, the inverter technology and optimizers for the industry have been flat. This really has to do with competition which Enphase doesn't really have much, there are other micro-inverter companies but they struggle to gain market share from Enphase. As for SolarEdge, they are starting to feel the pinch from other inverter manufactures that have created an alliance to develop cheaper optimizers, so we should see that at least help a little bit.

6:27..."they, meaning Enphase, are not going to keep producing the older inverters." NOT TRUE! We were an early adopter of Enphase MicroInverters. We installed M190 inverters in 2011. Two of them failed last year...actually they didn't fail outright, they just started to make much less AC power. Enphase sent us two NEW M190 MicroInverters and all the hardware and cabling necessary...at no charge...to connect them right back up to our existing system. Enphase does not still offer a 190W inverter to the public. But they supplied their existing users with BRAND NEW replacement inverters for the ones we bought in 2011. And these new ones are STILL correctly matched to the 240W panels we bought to work with the 190W MicroInverters.

Of course they replaced them, they have a 25-year warranty. But what you received while appears to be “new” is refurbished. As technology evolves it’s not economical for a company to continue making products they no longer sell and thus they repair damaged units.

Hey Google User, thanks for the comment. I would agree with you for a traditional solar system that is not using optimizers. The SolarEdge optimizers are as safe as the micro-inverters because of Rapid Shutdown requirements. That means the second the panel is plugged into the optimizer the voltage is less than 1v usually 0.1v. So that makes it very safe compared to the voltage coming straight from the solar panel ranging between 300v to 480v.
@jameswellman7585
@jameswellman7585 4 года назад
@@dalerolph The optimizes and rapid shutdown are a great feature. Nevertheless, the working DC voltage on the string cabling on the roof and leading down to the inverter input typically ranges from 350 Vdc to 850 VDc depending upon configuration. No problem, providing everything is up to snuff and looked after. To me, there's always that exception. Again, just saying and to me worth mentioning - high voltage DC is scary stuff
@dalerolph
@dalerolph 4 года назад
@@jameswellman7585 When the solar system is on and operational Yes DC voltage is scary stuff, I thought you were talking about during the installation process because that's really the only time DC voltage would be accessible since the junction boxes are open and wire is being pulled. @dalerolph
@dalerolph 4 года назад
Hey Matt Thro, not sure were you heard that the efficiency rating is at 50% load in testing. We'll have to check on that, from our understanding it's done to the standards set by UL and the NEC and CPUC. As for optimizers not optimizing a string they do improve power production when compared to a traditional string inverter system. They act just like micro-inverters allowing for a panel that's facing east to begin producing power earlier than a panel facing west and vice versa. This is something both systems had an advantage in, and I thought we did a good job pointing that out. The latest 6th and 7th generation micro-inverters are not backward compatible with any previous generation. They use a completely different communication protocol and require a different Envoy to report data, they also use different cabling than previous generations. The IQ6 and IQ7 micro inverters do not require a neutral wire, where all generations prior did. This is why Enphase created the Enphase Upgrade Program (go.enphase.com/upgrade/installers), for customers to upgrade their older equipment with newer equipment since they discontinued all generations up to IQ6 and the newer equipment does work with the older equipment.

The Solaredge folks are starting to approve RMAs like it's routine. Not a good sign. Enphase 25 year warranty, no single point of failure. SolarEdge 12 year warranty, multiple points of system failure. Maybe acknowledge you get what you pay for? It sounds like you might be mis-understanding DC to AC inverter saturation, "clipping" is often mis-used to confuse or mis-direct people, it can and does happen with ALL solar inverters, there is no harm. It just means that for a few minutes here and there the inverter didn't capture every single watt. (fun analogy- think of a tomato plant in your garden, sometimes a tomato doesn't make it to your meal). Real world performance of solar panels is nowhere near STC ratings, by using higher DC watts you can reduce many other costs. Electrical panel upgrades, less racking, less labor fewer circuits. Enphase micro inverters are happy to run at "full throttle" for decades, other inverters will overheat, de-rate and fail early if run hard. Good solar design should have well loaded, or well utilized solar equipment. (one more fun analogy- Do you run your washing machine half full?)
