In this video we show how to trim a Genoa and set the car lead position.
Genoa trim is particularly important on Genoa-driven masthead boats, but the same principles also apply to trimming jib sails on fractional mainsail-driven boats.
The cars shown in this video are from Garhauer Marine (www.garhauermarine.com) but similar models are also available from other manufacturers including but not limited to Barton (www.bartonmarine.com), Harken (www.harken.com), Lewmar (www.lewmar.com), Ronstan (www.ronstan.com). and Selden (www.seldenmast.com).

Good explanation. I hope you can expand on the different reaching angles in light and heavy wind and show the effect in perhaps a next video? But the basics seem to be: tighter angle to the wind, car goes aft (less twist). Wider angle (beam or broad reach), car goes forward (more twist). Oh, and one more thing, your cart is excellently placed, but on some boats, where it is closer to the side, it helps to use a barber hauler on tacking courses to get a little closer upwind.

Good suggestion! I would recommend marking your track (e.g. with numbers) and creating reference points in moderate conditions with a relatively un-twisted sail. For the most part in point mode (i.e. beating) the car is somewhat aft and inboard to get a good tight sheeting angle, while as the wind goes aft and you start to reach the car goes forward to keep the leach closed. If you have outboard tracks or floating leads you can also move the car outboard by the same amount in a reach. In higher winds you can keep the car a bit aft of the moderate wind settings to twist off and depower a bit. Does this make sense?

Love this. I've always explained telltales by saying that side can't 'see' the wind

That’s a great way to think about it - the side with the lifting telltales is “hungry” and looking for more wind!

Great video. This is the best one I’ve seen so far on the topic. Thanks.

Thanks so much!!! I wish I could have demonstrated the transition to the outboard lead for reaching, but this particular boat wasn't set up for it. Mine was but I sold it before I shot the video!

All well and good for a full a full size rig, but what about fractional rig??

Same principles apply to a fractional rig, however a masthead rig is more tweakable in this manner for reaching.
