Optimus Crux Lite Micro Stove: Snow Review

Competition to the proven and HOF micro stove here in TNP, the MSR Pocket Rocket? You bet. We showshoe into a high elevation to test the Optimus Crux Lite micro stove in 18ºF. You will see this stove is a performer. Philosophy with butane/propare cartridges included. The Crux Lite is indeed light as well: only 2.8 oz TOTAL carry weight for the stove alone. This is lighter than even the MSR Pocket Rocket but with the same capability. It does not feature self lighting however at this light weight. Choose the size cartridge you need on your expedition. Perfect for all types of camping, hiking, and Bug Out Kits, the Crux Lite is excellent and cost’s less than $35 too. Don’t waste your time with component stoves, heavier options (almost all), and sometimes unreliable, unadjustable homemade options; this Crux Lite works awesome and is cheap.

Crux is awesome. Been using it for years and i love it. It worked in minus 18C without a hickup.(at some point every gas cardridge will perform worse in those conditions but stove itself is excellent).Also if you're bored you can fold it and pretend it;s a miniature starship Enerprise

Thanks for Sharing the new stove Nutn. I still love the MSR Pocket Rocket its been around for a while, I remember getting my first couple back in the early 2000 time frame for like $20.00 each & that was paying REI prices. They have climbed a ton over the years in price. I will definitely take a look at that Primus. Take Care.

A Trangia alcohol stoves outpus a third of what the optimus does. It's enough in certain conditions, and has a simmer ring you can pop on and later burn yourself trying to adjust it. Use ethanol only.

it's nice but I am partial to my pocket rocket, the case is great and the way the arms are built protects it very well. it great to see the possible competition though. I had a buddy take out with me on my last overnight. he brought a cheap Chinese stove to try out and it worked well but we don't think it would make it if put to a lot of use.

The crux is a good stove. There's a cookset that has a heat exchanger and comes with the crux light for $80ish. The pot set is WAAAYYYYY fast in boiling water and you can go the other extreme and do popcorn or regular rice without burning. Only bad part to the crux or crux lite is fuel consumption, it's not awful but the pocket rocket is better on fuel and easier to simmer.

Doesn't the head of your Crux Lite tilt 90 degrees for storage? That's the best part of the stove. It allows you store the stove in the hollow of your canister. You can then shove both in your pot and then all of your cook supplies are together.

I have boiled water during negative temperatures, Fahrenheit, and the Pocket Rocket has done just fine on multiple occasions. I was going to pick up a another, one for my truck one for my bag, but I may have to try out this little Optimus Crux. Big points go to MSR, for shipping the Pocket Rocket in a hard container of its own. I know people with the JetBoil, and while I like that it packs into one system, it just seems too bulky and cumbersome for me. They absolutely love their JB's but it's just too $$ for me when I'm already not enjoying the shape of its system.
@saltydiarrhea386

I'll add that the Jetboil is much faster than my Pocket Rocket. But in the end that doesn't factor into my particularly -casual- POU.

Nutn, you'll appreciate this (I think). I have that same Fenix headband (based off your recommendation, and the outside plastic part that you tighten down on the light broke. So what did I do? me and 2 other friends used to pack in to deer hunt. for dinner we would take mountain houses and stash them at a camp area and hunt all day. when we got back we were tired, wore out and hungry. both my buddies had pocket rockets. they worked ok, until on one trip I showed up with a jet boil. We found the jet boil despite being heavier as a system to work ALOT better. It boils water alot faster if there is any breeze. The cup is insulated so you can grab it. The lid you can leave on and pour through. push button ignition. its just easier and simpler for us to use. So much so they both bought jet boils after using mine on a couple trips, the pocket rockets have been gathering dust every since. The other thing is everything is sized to store neatly inside the jet boil cup. everything from the fuel to the stove breaks down and stores inside.

I have the Optimus Crux and I really like it. I think the only difference between the standard Crux and the Crux Lite is that the standard crux has a pivoting neck for better storage. I've been really impressed with it so far. It boils water incredibly quickly and the fuel canisters last a long time.

I've got the regular Crux not the crux lite and I love it. it kinda folds and it fits folded in the concave portion of the fuel canister. it all fits perfectly in my Toaks titanium pot and its my backpacking cook setup. i don't know the weight difference between the crux and the crux lite but it's minimal. I'd prefer the stowing capability of the crux regular and they share the the same burner which i think is excellent. better than the pocket rocket. I found it was more evenly spaced heat and easy to regulate the heat.
