Optrel panoramaxx welding helmet review and my thoughts on it compared to the 3M Speedglas 9100 XXI. Going on an adventure today as well as talking about the "new" Optrel Panoramaxx welding helmet and how I like it. This Optrel hood is cheaper than the 3M speedglas but is it offering more? Not going into a whole lot of detail just sharing my thoughts on the difference in hoods as well as what I run as a daily TIG welding helmet. Some Slow motion B Roll as well as a couple drone shots to make a little more interesting. I am going to incorporate my style into the channel and do what makes me happy, hopefully you will follow along on the ride!

These videos are basically the hottest mixtape dropped on the internet ever. Seriously so good. I have the 3M one and its alright. I get the lense issues so now you’ve got me thinking about that Optrel. Keep up the good work, helping me out a ton.

Doing a great job Brad. I have been using a fixed 11 shade Jackson for over 10+ years now. I have been contemplating getting an auto shade because I have been doing a lot more small parts that require tig welding. The optrel panoramix was my second choice to the new Miller t94i but after watching this I’ll be ordering the optrel. Keep the content coming man, remember always do what makes you happy👍🏻👍🏻

I have your videos playing while I'm at my shop working on a Saturday night.... this caught my attention and I just bought a Optrel Panoramaxx after seeing this. Its easy to over look simple things to help put out better welds. I've had miller elites now and can't wait for the new hood. Its also so easy to get caught up in work flow and never upgrade or stay in the loop with whats up and coming when you own a business and stay busy.

I have been using the Speedglas 9000 for 11 years and just upgraded to the Optrel Panoramaxx after i had such issues when I was at Justin's shop (TheFabricator). The hood has served me well but technology has advanced a lot in that decade plus. The field of view, the color perception, and even the auto settings based on amperage your welding at, actually works! The only issue i had, first time putting it on, it wasn't fully adjusted yet and i did the head nod to drop the hood down....if its not adjusted correctly and you make that move, it'll crack the heck out of your bridge...my bad! Anyway, great purchase, love the video.

Im a speedglas guy of 15 years. Just got the 9100xxi coming from a 9100x. If you Weld all day everyday those side windows will last about 2 months before they're cooked. Nice concept if they would actually supply replacements which they don't. Not a breaking point for me though. If it lasts as long as my 9100x then I will be 100% satisfied.

The Miller headgear I always felt like I needed to adjust it. Went to Lincoln 3350. Much more comfortable for me but it was heavy. Got into pipe welding , been using custom pipeliners and they are great and light. But my shop added new lighting causing auto dark issues. Found a used speedglas 9002. Enjoy it , very comfortable and solid. Now looking at 9100xxi but not sure if I want to make the jump.

Always like a real review from a brother... Bought a LOT of hoods over my thirty years, and there's one thing straight off the bat... Analogue controls suck when they get shit in them. Give me the sealed Mylar membrane any day! Never known an analogue pot, or a sliding switch to ever go the distance in a smoke filled, fine grinding dust environment, ever.

Comment and question. Loved the video because I am down to these 2 helmets and the Esab. The Optrel is hands down the one I want but I do currently wear a Miller P100 respirator. You mentioned at the end of the video that a small respirator could be worn with the Optrel Panoramaxx, which one are you referring to?
@hourglassingenuity103
@hourglassingenuity103 6 лет назад
David Hefti awesome. Thank you for chiming in! I appreciate the support. The P100 and most HMR’s will all fit under this hood, your eyes will sit back away from the lens a little farther than if you didn’t use a respirator but it’s not a big deal, the Field of view is still fantastic!

Thank you very much for your review. I have an entry level helmet from 2010 (wanted so save some money) and I alway have trouble do see what I am doing. It seems that I can set it either to bright or to dark. After that disappointing experience I am willing to spend the money for a high quality helmet. Which helmet has the clearer vision during welding?

Tunicht Gut in my opinion, the optrel has the better clarity when under the hood. They are both good helmets.

I was talking about the Purple and blue miller respirator.. All respirators are going to sit on your nose. so you cant fully bring your eyes to the lens.. but i guarantee it has enough room in it to house a wide variety of respirators.

Thanks for the video Brad. These types of videos help people make decisions on what might work best for their situation. I recently purchased both helmets and took them to work for a week to give them both a fair shot in my welding world. I came to the conclusion that the 9100xxi was a better helmet for me. The Panoramaxx had a few negatives that were easily overcome by the 9100. I agree about the headgear, kind of cheap and stiff, but lighter which helps in the overall weight of the helmet. The auto shade adjustment is awesome but this feature is only linked to one of the sensors per Optrel. This is a bad design and I regularly get flashed when welding in tight areas or have parts on front of my face. When this happens I have to stop and switch it to manual mode. Another downfall is the price for the front lens. A pack of 5 is like 30 bucks. (If you only tig weld you wont go thru lenses that fast) The grind button is much better on the pannoramaxx vs the 9100, very easy to press where the on the 9100 you almost have to use both hands because the button is hard to depress and you need the other hand to hold the helmet in place. AS for the 9100 the clarity is superior. One of the few helmets on the market with a 1/1/1/1 rating. The arc color is more of a clear/blue color vs the standard green. The 9100 also has the headgear that wont fall down over your face if you look down. Hope this help others as well.
@DumahTheSeeker
@DumahTheSeeker 3 года назад
xxi doesn't have a 1111 rating. It's still the same 1112 rating regular 9100 has. There is only one speedglas adf with 1111 - it's a variation of g5-01. Also, I'm pretty sure you can use side pivots to adjust the optrel so it wouldn't fall down when you look down. But I'm not sure about this, since I've never really worked in it, just wore it a bit.

I started with miller digital performance, typical 2x4 lens. After a year or two went to miller digital elite, same exact one you have. God dang it was heavy. So heavy that I had to crank down on the headgear so it wouldn’t fall off, gave me headaches for 2 years. Then I went to optrel E584… holy cow! Fantastic. Once you have auto shading (not to be confused with auto darkening) it’s a game changer! When that broke to a drop, I upgraded to the crystal 2.0. Even better! Took some getting used to the 2x4 size lens again but it wasn’t terrible since the elites are bigger vertically, not much benefit IMHO. I tried the digital infinity before buying an optrel and that thing is a boat anchor on your head. I’ve welded with ESAB sentinel A50 for a few days too and that isn’t a bad hood either but I wasn’t a fan of the small grind button and smudges on the internal buttons. I now have a 9100xxi and it’s every bit as good as the optrel in clarity, the wider view is amazing. I do appreciate the speedglas doesn’t need constant adjustment of the headgear flip. But… it still doesn’t have auto shading. Also have isofit headgear on my crystal which is way more comfortable than the stand headgear but I used the stand headgear with optrel for 4 years and didn’t mind it personally, but the isofit shows you what you’ve been missing. I’d love to test out a panoramaxx at some point tho.

I'm currently using a Miller Elite Digital. I've had a older speedglas 9000 model hood. My question about both of these hoods, how much light do they let in behind your head? Hope that makes sense. That a problem for me causing eye strain. Seems to me the miller lets in a lot of light compared to my old speedglas. How do these compare to each other. Great video by the way. Keep up the work
@hourglassingenuity103
@hourglassingenuity103 6 лет назад
You know what.. I honestly haven’t paid attention too much. The newer these welding hoods get the more dynamic they are when it comes to wrapping around your head nicely. I haven’t had a problem with either one letting too much light in the back of the hood. Every once in a while it will come up from the bottom depending how my head is turned. I’ll have to pay attention and get back to you on that. Thank you!

Nice vids, your doing an excellent job. Down tone the music though. I've had an Optrel Panoramaxx for the past 10 months and you are correct that it's very lightweight, has an awesome FOV and in general is an awesome helmet. One thing I don't like about it is where the grind mode button is. I kept accidently activating it when putting the helmet on and as a result got flashed repeatedly. The button is VERY SENSITIVE. Easiest way to correct this is to find a plastic cap, place it over the button and a apply a dab of hot glue to secure it. Problem Solved. I was also getting flash under the bottom edge of the helmet so I made a leather bib for it and attached with Velcro so it can be easily removed if desired. Made all the difference in the world. The other problem I've had is the auto darkening on my original helmet stopped functioning. Optrel replaced quickly. The replacement helmet has had the same issue with the auto darkening function. The manual function hasn't had any issues so that's where it stays. The Panoramaxx can also be charged via solar (sun) so it's not necessary to actually charge it via USB unless it's been stuffed away in the closet or a welding cabinet and even then just put it out in the direct sun light for a while to charge. Overall, I like the helmet. Just wish they made 3.0 readers for it. The highest readers available to date are 2.5's.

I'm Australian and we have a brand of welders and accessories sold here called UNIMIG. I bought their latest welding helmet about 2 years ago, (called the RAZORBACK) and it has been THE best helmet I've owned, but it had one problem, that it didn't feel "right", in the headgear, and then one day the headband BROKE. I'ts my third Auto-darkening helmet, the "highest TECH" lens I've had, the Lens is a four sensor setup with very large view area, but the headgear is quite flimsy and that's why it broke. So I went to the welding store and found the VIKING headgear for Lincoln Electric, which felt better and stronger, so I modified the holes in the side of the helmet to take the VIKING and it is now "all GOOD".

Well, I've had my panoramaxx for under a year and it has never worked on pulse tig so have to revert to using my speedglas 9100xx to pulse tig. It works for stick but my company just bought me a synergic pulse mig plant to speed up production the panoramaxx won't work with that either.... And to top it off the ADF filter cracked while I was welding this morning... it is not fit for purpose a total fail... and that's being fair...

westwater73 I’m sorry to hear that. My hood works perfectly fine in every process.. and especially when pulse welding. That would be something I would have discussed with Optrel and tried to find a solution. In my case, the speedglas is faulty. 3 replacement lenses later and a talk with the R&D department resulted in me trying the optrel helmet. anyways, hopefully you figure it out! I still believe it’s a solid good. 👌🏻

My 1st optrel couldn't cope with pulse, the screen cracked... optrel sent me a new lid and it hasn't happened since, I did get 1 of the 1st off the production line, but I was still pissed... I'd stay clear if you need to jam your head I tight spaces....

I’m an iron worker and do Stick welding almost everyday. I purchased the the speedglas 9100xxi and it lasted a little over a year before the lens cracked. They wouldn’t replace so i purchased another one only to have that crack in about a week, I couldn’t believe it. I called 3M and after speaking to 2 people they agreed to send me a one time replacement but I’m too scared to bring it to work now and use whatever my company provides. I couldn’t believe how fragile these lenses are. Great helmet but just doesn’t seem to last long. 3M asked me if I weld in tight places or if I let my helmet warm up before using it lol. Ofocurse I weld in tight places and I don’t have the option of letting my helmet warm up before getting to work. Im considering getting an optrel. Hopefully the lens is more durable.

I am 100% the opposite way on the headgear. I couldn’t stand the headgear on my 9100XXi, seemed way to overly complicated for me. I much enjoy the simplicity of the Optrel, and that cam lobed knob on the side to adjust the stopped position is just too cool.
@tihs87
@tihs87 6 лет назад
just to mention, autodarkening is eliminating overexposure to bright light, but it doesn't protect your eyes from uv, there is a clear coat on the leans which does that all the time. safety reasons.

Optrel would definitely get a chance from me if they had a replacement battery available. But they don't, so it's definitely 3M for the win here! The other benefits are just too minor for me to be stuck with an Optrel paperweight sitting on a shelf. This is a major oversight in my opinion!

Half mask respirators CAN be worn under the Panoramaxx hood. As HGF already mentioned, when wearing a respirator all it will do is won't allow you to get your eyes as close to the lens as if you weren't wearing a HMR.

Jeremiah Mckenna I can say that the small blue and purple miller respirators fit very well under the optrel. I am not sure about the respirator you are talking about. As for Tig vs MiG.. I just have a designated hood strictly for Tig work and a hood for MiG work. It is perfectly fine for MiG.. I’ve used it on some really got push pull aluminum MIG and it did well. 400+ amps.

We seem to have followed the same path on opposite ends of the world. I 100% agree with you on all 3 helmets as it would happen. One major plus for the Optrel, which you may not be aware of as you only tig with it, is the curved front lens doesn't collect sparks n stuff when welding overhead and such (mig, stick mainly). Keep up the great vids and good luck from Oz

Damn I have the 9100x no issues. Was thinking about the xxi but now I may just keep mine. Do mainly stick pipe so the hood def gets dirty but has held up through thousands of rods burned, and 2 welding certification test.

I went from a Viking 3350 to a speedglass 9100 xxii, the difference is huge! It's hard to describe it but with my other hood I kept having to guess and hope I was starting at the correct spot in overhead. When I got the speedglass I was able to go into an almost pitch black room and see the corners. Another person described it as wearing sunglasses. With my viking there was more of a green shade. I took a shot in the dark after trying a friends Miller Elite, thinking price would correspond to quality. In that case it did. My friend has a sentinel as well and thinks his miller is better than his sentinel. He described the speedglass as the most amazing hood he's used. I don't know how good the Optrel hood in the video is (I'm sure it's good too) but I do know I'm very happy with my Speedglass. In regards to the headgear I think the speedglass could use more padding.... currently looking for some. The Miller Elite had better padding. I payed about $450 for mine on amazon, my viking was about 220 to 250ish. My friend got his miller for about $300 - $350. I'm not sure about the weight compared to my other hood. The speedglass seems a bit lighter. Awesome review!

Optrel Panoramaxx quality control issues. Amazon buyer reports Dec/2018: " bought 5 helmets and non of them are usable". July/2018 You-tuber davis0331 does a video on issues he's having with the Panoramaxx. I was seriously considering it but here are my issues: 1 - they obviously don't do a quality check before shipment (5 months of reported issues). 2 - the head strap is inferior to all other helmets at a similar price point. 3 - replacement shields are unique shape so can only be bought at Optrels high price. 4 - battery is unproven and not replaceable. 5 - replacement lens cost is almost the same price as the helmet. 6 - Video and other reviews are almost all 'got it for free" from Optrel to do their review of the product. I have to ask myself it it worth 4 times the price of the Striker Supreme XL Auto Darkening Welding Helmet? Or almost twice the price of the Lincoln Welding 3350?

Get mikie 2eatit I didn’t get a helmet for free, I paid 400$ for it. I haven’t had any problems and I just purchased the new crystal 2.0 from optrel also. I’m not sure what the attacking is for but I apologize that you have had such a rough time. I’m not optrel though, so my review shouldn’t anger you when I’m just expressing my honest opinion. Have a nice day.
@getmikie2eatit366
@getmikie2eatit366 5 лет назад
Hi HourGlassFab! Sorry for the confusion. It's unfortunate that you took my words as a personal attack. Let me try to explain. I'm not angry and I haven't had a rough time. I was just expressing my thoughts that the Panoramaxx does have real concerns (like you had with the 9100xxi). In my case, I was moments away from buying the Panoramaxx when I saw a price drop and new 1 star review on Amazon. After reading the Amazon review I made a list of Optrel's issues that I had accumulated from watching and reading all the different reviews. I'm glad I held off buying their product. let me take one example: you and most every other reviewer mentioned that the head gear is poor quality. You called it "floppy". I asked myself why would a company introduce a higher priced helmet and overlook such an essential element to comfort, usability and fit? That's when I realized (in my opinion) Optrel is more a marketing/Points of Differentiation focused company. What credible manufacturer wouldn't consider quality headgear as a basic need?... especially at a $435 MSRP. With no disrespect to you, my posting was to point out to other shoppers to buy carefully, Optrel does have its issues too.

The reason I bought an auto darken lid was when teaching welding to students there were a lot of inadvertent arc strikes in the booths. So the auto allowed me to help them with angles, distance to material etc, but without going home with aching eyes at the end of the day.
