Useful video. Thanks. I’m a Makita fan but without the budget to buy everything I want when I want it. The glue gun looks fab. I’ll take a look at the links as I’m in the market for a replacement impact driver. Oh, and I’ve caught up. You have been watched, weighed and found… excellent! Thx 4 sharing. I definitely don't leave batteries in chargers too. I like the tools, however I prefer corded tools, they're more powerful, last longer and are cheaper too. I wouldn't worry about the smoke on the heat gun, my hair dryer does that too sometimes when using it to dry things.

Thanks for sharing! I own a number of tools from Makita, Ryobi and HItachi/Hikoki. I did consider the cordless Makita sander, but balked at the price, and, having used one belonging to a workmate, was not impressed by the runtime or comfort of use. That said, I am lucky enough to have purchased the excellent, corded Bosch orbital sander - considerably more than £40 - and it is a pleasure to use for extended periods. With great dust collection, and anti-vibration isolation, you don't have to hold it in a death grip, and very little of the vibration travels up your arm. I'd say, if you are planning on doing very little in the way of sanding, The Makita or knock off would suffice. Bang for buck, though, you'd be better off with a corded tool, both in terms of price and performance.
@startmaking1
@startmaking1 10 месяцев назад
I agree on the comfort. It is ok but just ok. Would prefer the Festool shape seems a little better ergonomically. I think that the Bosch is also a good shape. You need more at the back to hold rather than directly over the disc. Great summary too. Agreed.

I had the random orbital sander, but it broke after about 3 months of light use. I pulled it apart to see why and the spindle inside the motor had snapped, which was impossible to fix. The build quality seemed alright otherwise so I could have gotten a dodgy one, but from now on I'll probably just buy matika and hopefully save space in the landfill.
@startmaking1
@startmaking1 10 месяцев назад
This is really good feedback to have as I have not had time to long term test. What a pain that you could not at least fix yours. But I am happy to hear that the rest of the build was ok. I will test mine similar to how you used yours and see if it lasts the year. the landfill;; thing does worry me too and that is why I want to report back on longevity to some extent as I am not about buying disposable tools, more good value for users who dont need work horses. ie beginners and hobbyists.

hi Richard, You are absolutely in the majority here and I dont think that leaving the battery on the tool is the worst thing. I dont like the idea of charging overnight if I am honest but a lot depends on so many factors about your set up that I dont know. I am on the over cautious side with these type of things and have gotten into a habit now otherwise I would definitely forget.

The smoking is most likely the oil residue burning off. Many tools that have metal on them are greased or oiled to prevent corrosion while being stored. As long as it stops after a few uses, it's not the motor.

The light on the power bank looks as if it could be used as a raking light. That to me would be more useful than that battery charging for checking swirl patterns while sanding. However the glue gun is almost exactly what I’ve been looking for. So I’ve ordered that I’ll get it on Monday and hopefully it lives up to my own expectations. 😂 Thank you for showing that in particular.
@startmaking1
@startmaking1 10 месяцев назад
I considered this but wondered if it would have the width to make it useful. Very good point though. And so long as you have the battery to sand, you have the battery to check for swirls. Good point. the Glue gun is my best in show here. I didn't want to video to sound like a click the link video but I should have said that it is one that most could use. Hope yours functions as well as mine and that you got the discount.

@@startmaking1 I got a headlamp that has a stretchy adjustable strap and attach it to my whatever sander I am using. But I have used pen lights all the way up to my actual lamps using the lampshade to get a good view😂I don’t think it’s width so much as getting a good angle with whatever light. Got the glue gun today and in testing it I am over the moon. I think I can finally put away the 4 different plug in ones around my shop. It did kind of freak me out at first as I put the glue stick in, waited about 4 minutes, went to try on my first piece and probably pulled the trigger a dozen times (with little tiny puffs of smoke ) before wondering if it was somehow eating and digesting the glue when I finally got some out 😂 Maybe it has just been a long while since I put a stick into a completely empty gun. Very, very exciting for me as I use a lot of glue especially when planing wonky boards. And, yes, thank you, in the US I did get a $2.00 coupon. 🤗🤗🤗

A little surprised that you didn't look at similar kit from Lidl or Aldi, although I realise that they aren't compatible with Makita batteries. I actually just bought one from black and decker granted corded but it was 20 although a looked at einhell which is the battery platform of my drill and driver and they do cordless for 27 although was out stock hense why didn't. The blower seems really handy and the charger light think you'll be surprised how much u use the light think routing Extra light sanding give u light to see sanding swirls. Important question for any battery tool- is it brushless? Costs more, but longer life and more power for less battery. Cheapees never are. Makita orbital may not be, DeWalt certainly is. Not buying brushless means you are going to end up replacing it... Glue gun is good; will be buying one. Especially as the DeWalt version is £1 cheaper! The heat gun is advertized as 1200W- which means a 4Ah battery (~80W) will last less than 4 minutes...

Most of my hand tools are corded, but I do have 9.6 V Makita drill that needs a new battery. Prior to this video. I was not aware of Mellif or its concept. The US Amazon does carry Mellif tools. I think it's a great concept if someone has several batteries of the same company, particularly in a home hobbyist or part time shop. I might caution that the tools may look similar to a branded tools, but maybe there are some cost savings taken in their manufacturer. This may not even be an issue in the home shop. So i say put them all to work for a while & see how they perform. On the sanders, the Makita motor armature may be better balanced than the Mellif or ride in better bearings/bushings. If you get similar scratch patterns from both don't be concerned about one having more movement than the other. You don't need branded tools to enjoy this hobby. I have quite an assortment of tool brands, not many of which are major brands. I do like major brands for saw blades, router bits, & layout tools. But like many, I don't have a ton of money to invest in the hobby. I did enjoy this video's format & subject, even though they'll probably never be used in my own shop.
@startmaking1
@startmaking1 10 месяцев назад
Yes, It seems that the glue gun is the only one available in the US. Shame really. And I agree that looks should only be taken as that. The sander is just not the same. Ok for a hobbyist but not for longer term use. I plan to keep using where possible and see. Not sure the heat gun will get massive use but all of the others will. And thank you for the open mind. Like in the last video, I dont expect most to go out and buy a 5k laser but hopefully the content is at least interesting.

I have the glue gun, really useful for temporary holds as I never think these are a really permanent fix on timber. With regards to the sander my only concern is when you say using a R/O sander for around an hour, take regular breaks when using these type of sanders and if you need to spend that amount of time maybe think you are using the wrong type of sander; there are far better types that will remove stock quicker and better. After a lifetime in the trade trust me you need to limit the time using a vibrating tool.
@lutherburgsvik6849
@lutherburgsvik6849 10 месяцев назад
Indeed. Nerve damage from long term use of vibrating tools isn't fun.
@startmaking1
@startmaking1 10 месяцев назад
100% agree. I hope that I got the point across that I dont really recommend this type for pros. In honesty I dont see a pro using one of these as, like you say, a corded sander and one of the bigger ones, maybe a Festool, Bosch or mirka will do a better job quicker. But for a hobbyist, rounding edges and making smaller pieces, this could be a cheap option. I can't imagine how anyone could use one of these for 3-4 hours a day.

Great question. The sander I dont use. Interesting experiment and I'm sure if money is tight then it could serve a purpose. Okay... I consider this topic a nasty one... Speaking from experience, the name of the brand (Maliff or whatever) does not matter at all. The product almost always comes from china, and to china the money will flow. Hence "the nasty" part of the topic... Apart from the obvious IP Theft...These chinese companies, does not care about their reputation when they're selling cheap product, hence, they does not care much about OUR safety. If their product blow up, hurts or kills people... they just have to declare bankrupcy, pin the blame on someone, and then make THE EXACT SAME PRODUCTS on a new brand. The big brand cannot let their name tarnished like that. That is the main part... --- The second (of three) part is... I believe this is a slippery slope... cheap products get sold easily, and the big brand are losing some of their sales from it. What happens next is... what I like to call "mediocrity ascend to normalcy and innovation belongs to the thieves instead of the innovator". Some may say that this is an exxageration... But I dare say I have learned from experience... not in woodworking tools... but in Video games. Chinese video games makes the most money in this planet... and all of their games are either mediocre, or steals almost everything except the visuals from someone else (example : Genshin Impact, stole the entire ideas from Zelda, and then add in the sexual elements dan the gambling addiction element. The same will happen to tool industry if we keep buying the cheap knock off of the "advanced technology" tools. in the near future, I believe that many woodworking tools will have its digital counterpart (automatic/digital table saw fence, laser cut with easy interface, digital router, etc)... and china will make the unsafer ones while the original innovators won't be able to sell as much. And then.... when all the dust settled... injury to faulty tools and mediocre tools becomes the mainstream (just like Genshin Impact becomes the highest revenue making online video game in the planet) --- The third and final act... I really hope you will fix the audio soon... It's kinda jarring to have it imbalance towards the left ear :)

That's not to say that the 'big' brands are not made in China (for a while, there were 3 laptop manufacturers - in the world - in Taiwan - they just produced different 'makes' for different brands/labels - same happens with supermarket 'house-brands' - the A-brand produces the same product (with slight variations) for the 'competition'). But yes, China is stealing left and right - we allowed them for decades and now 'we pay the price' (no pun) as they compete the Western brands out of the market (whereas we brought our factories there to begin with). (EV) Cars are next - and, they built their first jet-liner... Point is, we want cheap(er) - and governments destroying middle-classes, people have less money to spend... It's a race to the bottom and even China is becoming too expensive - moving production to Cambodia and Vietnam (two other great examples of Communism-turned-capitalist). So, nice if you can afford the brands (with their mark-ups, marketing and overhead), but more and more people can not - and paying triple for a machine that might not last three times longer (trying to find parts that are not almost the price of a new tool....), it is not hard to see why more and more knockoffs will come (and go). Rough times for sure.

Hi. Wow, that was a long comment. Thank you for posting it. Let me address the sound first. I think that in videos that have not already been recorded it should be fixed as I have spoken to Rode and put in a work around. Not my thing all this tech. I cna see the issue with the China part. The reputation. It's funny, my contact at Meliff emailed me today to reassure people that they offer a year after purchase where they offer some kind of assistance. I didn't ask details but was surprised to hear that. As for injuries and such, I have to disagree to a small extent on some points as I have tried to contact Makita as a customer and have had multiple emails replied with the same copy and paste reply that didn't even address my initial question. Their customer service is as poor as a lot of others. Shame as I have invested a lot in them and advertise them often and for free. As for the other points, I can see your point of view and you clearly have more experience that myself. All I can say is that in most cases, and you will see this in a future Temu related video, I am becoming more cautious about buying injury producing tools on the cheap, rather more accessories. Marking equipment and such. One reason why I am yet to test the Meliff Jigsaw or circular saw. Thank you for taking the time to comment and it is much appreciated.

@@startmaking1 Thanx for reading that long comment of mine, really appreciate it. Yeah, I heard that Makita service center can be hard to deal with. I'm really looking forward to the Temu video and eventual Audio fix Oh I forgot to mention in my previous comment that... for highly overpriced cordless tools, like the cordless glue gun, cordless torch, and cordless soldering iron... I think we should just buy the cheap chinese ones. And some people in my country sell a...uhh... battery adapter ? It's a plastic with some metal strip that goes between a brand of cordless tool, and another brand of battery (so you can use a Makita Battery on a Bosch Cordless Drill, for example) Some even 3D print it (in 2 parts, and you can put a thin bended metal strip that acts as a conductor)

Fingers crossed on the Audio., Its driving me nuts. The Temu purchases were a real eye opener. As many other videos have shown. Some good thought. Fun nonetheless. I agree with your comment too. the glue gun is brilliant and for around £20 it is so much cheaper than others. Worth a shot for sure. I would quite like some adapters as Meliff make a fair amount more for dewalt than Makita. You are right from your original post too. I have already had one person say they got the sander and it broke. So maybe the best ones are the simple cheaper ones like the glue gun and USB torch.

@BobMuir100 hi Bob. First off please don't take this relpy as anything other than factual. No insult has been taken my your message and I hope this is only read as a reply to someone offering advice. I understand that you know what makes a good video. Sadly, I know too. It is what frustrates me when I am making videos that i know aren't quite there. But what you don't know us why. And why would you. The fact is the tool test video was made when I had all my tools locked away and inaccessible . As are my tripods and lots of other items I need in order to make an acceptable video by perfectionist standards. All I can do.is my beat. And please remember this when watching. I make these basically for free with the aim of helping beginner and intermediate woodworkers. I'm not chasing the big channels. If it comes then great. I'll deal with that as and when. Also please remember when criticising my results and performance. You also don't know my constraints. I have just built my workshop. That took a lot physically and mentally. I also have a full time job. I have 2 young kids. My wife is battling long covid. I suffer from ME or chronic fatigue as it is also known. And yet I am still happily making the videos to my best standards. It's all I cam do and I will not apologise if they are not good enough. I just wanted to give it a try. Now, if you are still reading then you haven't been offended by my honesty and that is good. Please do feel free to offer assistance but if you re read your first comment, maybe offer it kindly as so many it others do. Simply insulting a video helps no one. And rest assured I do intend to plan as much as I can in future videos, like I have in ones prior to these. Take care and thank you
