Question: If index is not used as part of query execution, how to make index query should use index?

Hi Brother i have i created normal index on department_column in EMPLOYEE TABLE When i execute query this select ename,sal,deptno from employee where deptno = 10 ; still This showing like table access full how to sove this plz tell me

Hi Manju, Even if we create the index, incase if optimizer feels, that the cost of accessing the data through index path is costlier than accessing the full table, then it will prefer to do full table scan, rather than going through index path., sometimes, if the table is very very small, then accessing the full table is efficient than accessing through index path. Hence cost based optimizer decides based on the size & statistics of table to decide accessing through index or not., however we can enforce the index through hints.
