How to Screen Yourself for Oral Cancer
Oral cancers develop on the tongue, on the tissue lining the mouth and gums, under the tongue, at the base of the tongue, and the area of the throat at the back of the mouth. Oral cancer accounts for roughly three percent of all cancers diagnosed annually in the United States, or about 54,000 new cases in 2022.
Mouth cancer signs and symptoms
a lump in your neck.
loose teeth.
swelling or a sore on your lip that won't heal.
difficult or painful swallowing.
changes in speech.
bleeding or numbness in the mouth.
white or red patches on the mouth, tongue or gums.
unexplained weight loss.
What does Stage 1 mouth cancer look like?
Early signs of mouth cancer one should look out for include: Mouth sores that easily bleed and do not heal. Loose teeth. Red or white patches on the tonsils, gums, tongue, or the mouth lining.
Can oral cancer be cured?
Oral cancer is fairly common. It can be cured if found and treated at an early stage (when it's small and has not spread). A healthcare provider or dentist often finds oral cancer in its early stages because the mouth and lips are easy to examine. Almost all oral cancers are squamous cell carcinomas.
