Kevin Porée from Berry Street Studios talks to John Oram about the BEQ Series 24/4T console. This video is dedicated to the late Scott Singer of Singer Productions Who originally owned this special console.
The second anyone says "analog" mic pres I stop listening. There are no other kind. There are analog mic pres with some post mic pre digital emulation software to try and make the amplified signal sound like other analog mic pres but absolutely all mic pres are analog. Get the theme here? The pre- amplifiier amplifies the low level analog signal put out by the microphone so it can be used by following gear which may or may not be digital. If that signal were attempted to be recorded digitally without that analog preamplifier stage first it would be at the very bottom of the bit depth range of the A/D converter. If there is digital anything it is after the mic pre. To say "analog" mic pres implies there are another kind. It's possible the guy is conflating the idea of digital outputs on some mic pres or mic pres on audio interfaces with the concept of what an actual mic pre is. It's fine to be a noob, but don't try and talk like a pro if you're a noob.
All mic pres are analog, that is true. But in this case I think he was talking about the mic pres having an "analog" sound or more colored sound which comes from transformers, tubes, etc. Most digital consoles have sterile tubeless mic pres which are still analog of course but they have no coloration.
