I was going to comment on your fish & chips video the other day to say you haven't had the best fish & chips until you've had some in the black country they're amazing
I actually visited Majors and was shocked to see the MacMaster in there. Real genuine guy. Nice to meet you in person mate. I was the black guy with glasses speaking to you by your car.
In Australia we have a large variety of fish available in most of our fish and chip shops. Barramundi, Whiting, Flathead, Orange Roughy, Flake (Gummy Shark), Cod, Hake, Blue Grenadier etc. The flake (shark) is especially popular here and is first rate too! You won't find mushy peas or curry sauce here though. It's normally tartare sauce, tomato sauce, vinegar and you'll get asked whether you want normal salt or chicken salt on your chips. We're also big on potato cakes, battered scallops, dim sims, seafood sticks etc. Most fish and chip shops here also do hamburgers, steak sandwiches and souvlakis as well. Not unusual to see a big jar of pickled onions on the counter as well.
9.5 for me, Lee, as the peas looked a little fluorescent for my taste. Those chips did look amazing, though and your comments reminded me of the chips you had in a small village you stayed at in Scotland, while on your way up North.

Bilston is just outside Wolverhampton town centre but yes it’s part of Wolverhampton. Majors is famous but there are a few places in Wolverhampton that do battered chips really well. I live the other side of Wolverhampton. Welcome to my home town we are all friendly
Originally from Willenhall (a mile away from Bilston), now Durham. In Bilston, locals say the chips are "Bostin". Great Vlog, well worth the distance travelled. Always go to Majors when we travel down. Superb score, well impressed.
Middletons chips back in the 70's, Wolverhampton road, Walsall nr. junc.10. Yellow chips and fish, absolutely beautiful. Never been equaled. Not sure of current owners still do.
I remember seeing the owner would put cupfull of batter in the chip bucket. Beauty is it seals in chip so the moisture doesn't boil off. Like the fish.

Wow...that is my wife and I home town, wish we had seen you. Majors is a place my wife has been going to for years - she used to go with her parents, back in the days when it first opened, we are 53 years old.

My family are originally from the Black Country. On every building site you see a black wheelbarrow with a red wheel, that was one Grandpa's company Brownhills Sheetmetal. The other Grandpa was Hawley Tents. All the bell tents for the Army were ours, from the Boer War until the 60's, made in Walsall. The chippys of the West Midlands are some of the best in the world.
@@Markington Some class the Black Country as the metropolitan region west of Birmingham. It’s boundary is historically vague. The true Black Country to locals would definitely be towns in Dudley and most of Sandwell IMHO

Amazing food mate. I’ve eaten fish and chips in The Black Country a number of times and they do some of the best around. Battered chips are very popular in that area. Very friendly people there too. Only about 20 minutes away from here in Birmingham and always worth a visit. 9.5/10 for me Lee. Great review again, cheers👍🏻

As a Black Country bloke myself I've had battered chips for my tea tonight from a place in Tipton. Majors chip shop is an institution round here. Very famous

Peps used to be ok, but it's not worth the hype or the que. His brother Marc used to do much better food at the fish inn in Whitmore reans before he shut up shop.
Yeah about 3 weeks ago, doughy batter on the fish, and it seems like pep and his son have forgotten the secret recipe for the battered chips. As I said the que don't match the hype. When you can go to better chip shops, and not get a dodgy belly After.
Cracking good chippy, stumbled across it when I went to a gig in Bilston a few years ago. Never even heard of orange chips and they were awesome... must make an excuse to get back there one day...
Battered chips are the best when they are done right, worked in a chippy for three years, I used to batter the chips in a baby bath believe it or not , I am black country born and bred, ok enough waffling on, I'm going to watch the rest of the vlog, catch ya lata.
From Wales living in Melbourne, there are loads of food places here and the best one to have is Asian probably due to its location. Surprisingly the hardist decent things to find in Oz are the most popular foods in the U.K., that is fish and chips, full english breakfast, Indian food and roast dinners. Everything else is great except for those foods. You will find it interesting. Give me a whistle and I'll show you the ropes :)
I used to go to Majors with my stepdad I loved their chips. We had my stepdads funeral in the black country just about 3 years ago as he was black country born and bread. On the way home from the funeral I popped in to Majors for a portion of orange chips. Had to be done.

If coming to Northern Ireland, try Tommy's Fish and Chips in Ballykelly. If you're planning on travelling around all of Ireland, why not combine your trip with doing the Wild Atlantic Way as well. 1,600 miles of stunning scenery and that's just from the Old Head of Kinsale to Malin Head. If you start in the North, you can drive along the Causeway Coastal Route (120 miles) from Belfast to Derry/Londonderry and then onto the WAW, and at the other end continue from Kinsale around the South and East coast.
I was worried by the word 'orange' Lee, but that looks good, very good, in fact! The NI trip sounds fantastic, so many awesome places to drive around over there and great food too!

As a Black Country boy myself, a couple of quick points: The "Oright!" greeting is more of a Brummie thing than Black Country, a "Warro", "Ow B'ist" or even "Owdoo" are more likely. Also, I could argue that Bilston isn't even actually in it - as it doesn't have a Dudley, Sandwell or Walsall postcode...I'd recommend to non-locals always going to these places rather than Wolverhampton to avoid quite the local quarrel!
They serve orange chips in the original Scoffs Restaurant and Takeaway in Barnstaple, North Devon. Had them a few times. Certainly is a chip with a difference. All the best Lee, glad you enjoyed the experience.
If they took the curry sauce and peas cartons out of the box and put them in a bag, you could have had a decent size portion of chips.I would have expected that for the money you paid.
Hey, welcome to Majors, they have another shop in Wednesfield. When we have a chippy tea from Majors I have to put them in a thermal bag to keep them hot to get them back to Wolverhampton.
That's the best looking fish and chips I've seen., so good I'm considering moving there. I've already been on Rightmove and there are actual real houses and flats under £100k, a few under £50k!!!!! Why the hell am I renting a one bedroom craphole in a dead Wiltshire town for the rest of my life when for the same money I could move to the paradise that is Bilston , stuff my face with orange chips and start a property empire.
As a whole, Wolverhampton and Walsall not in the Black Country as its historic ties are to Staffordshire, although some of the towns between the two are Black Country. Bilston is absolutely in the Black Country!!!
Absolutely! The Black Country refers to the towns where the Earl of Dudley’s 30ft black coal seam was mined in the 18th century. Definitely not Wolverhampton, Walsall & a lrge part if present day Sandwell.
West Bromwich was part of Staffs… but is very Black Country. The Black Country gets its name from the surface coal seam that ran through Dudley up to Wednesbury Tipton and Bilston

@@Durgesuthpart of west brom was black country. the east side which is now housing estates now was rural. if you read the ordnance maps it really does open your eyes up. dudley stole the black country crown when the origianl area was bilston/bradley/wednesbury/great bridge. and the horsley fields area of wolverhampton certainly played its part and should be included along with parkfields and all the eastside of the town
The black country battered chips are a top secret recipe they say, but l reckon they are dusted in corn flower and tumeric before frying, not exactly battered
That fish looked superb and you’re in the West Midlands so of course the curroi sauce is going to have a kick. Wasn’t sure about the chips but I’ll definitely take your word for it!
When you come to Northern Ireland, I would highly recommend going to CoFermanagh, it is a beautiful area which gets forgotten. In Enniskillen there is a fabulous family run business called the 'Jolly Sandwich', also for great fish and chips Kennys and Michaels Diner both in Enniskillen...
I use to live in Tamworth, and when I first dated a woman from Bilston she use to go on about orange chips. I would pull a face when ever she spoke about them, but when I first tried them I fell in love with them 😋😋😋😋😘😘😘 yummy. But we use to go to another chippy for them though
Hi Lee, hope your great mate. Now then, just a little bit of info about the state of play of eating fish n’ chips in ‘straya. Prepare to wait forever for your order as strangely it seem fish n’ chips isn’t “fast food’ as they cook at the time of order at astronomical prices. The chips are normally frozen chips cooked in some weird oil and don’t even think about finding any malt vinegar (sarsons). Oh no, they have white vinegar in there chippys. I thought white vinegar was used to clean windows 😂 I used to live in Eastwood, Nottingham, but now living in the Gold Coast, Queensland. If you want good fish n’ chips Down Under it’s best to find an expat who owns and runs a chippy here as it’s as close as you can get to the real deal. Keep up the good work Lee on your channel, thoroughly enjoy it, and being a Mansfield lad is an absolute bonus! Looking forward to your time here in Australia 👍 Cheers Mark

Come to Essex, our seafronts aren’t particularly fab but our fish and chips are. Also Wivenhoe village, one of two chippies has won the best fish and chips in the country a couple of times, they are fab, not the one on the quay front, ooog that sucks, the one at the top of the village is just fabulous. I now live in a tiny village of Fobbing, a few miles of Basildon, they call it the diamond in area as it’s literally a few roads big, amazing here too, the one pub too! We’ll keep you busy with good places to eat down here. Except we find all the spoons so bad!
As an ex west midlands resident , I remember in my youth having orange chips at some chippies but never gave it much thought . Seeing these on RU-vid it piqued my interest a bit and as I may be visiting friends up there soon may well pop by one of these shops and get some , probably Majors .Saw this place on RU-vid and was going to suggest you do a review , only to see you already have done . Makes me even more interested now . By the way ,my trip from distant Essex , maybe 200 miles if I do the scenic Cotswold route as no rush.....will use less than a quarter of a tank in my diesel Insignia , no range anxiety there 😉
@@howardsheldon4742 It wasn't invented by Asians at all. It was invented either in Bilston a mostly White Working Classic Town or Darlaston down the road again a mostly White Working Class town 60 years ago when we had a very small Asian Population.
I went over to NZ May 1985. Booked into a "Homestay" and had a look round. 1st shop "Fish and Chips" Mission Bay Auckland. I had Tarakihi and chips, then watched the Southern Lights, way over on the horizon, could only just see them though. The Fish and chips were excellent, bit like haddock, similar inside. Recommended.
I was born and raised in the Black Country wor I before I was transported to Sydney under duress . Have to say I wasn’t too impressed with what I saw there , and had a bit of a shock with the cost . We have a say in Australia , it’s “ charges like a wounded bull “ and that was definitely a bit rich . Another popular saying in the Black Country is “ Bostin Fittle “ meaning good food in the Queens English , but that wor Bostin Fittle aer kid . It’s difficult to find a proper Fish and Chip shap in Sydney , most takeaways sell fish and chips , but they are not dedicated chippies like in the UK and I find the quality usually very ordinary to say the least , can’t say about NZ as I haven’t had fish and chips there. I do find Adelaide is more in tune with the UK when it comes to tucker , some good places there to have a feed . When you coming to Sydney Lee? …. Have a good trip and try and critique the plane food 😉.. I’m sure it will be delightful 😆😆

Snapper and chips from my local takeaway in Auckland.....delicious, Haven't found mushy peas ( thankfully), gravy or curry sauce and bring your own vinegar here in NZ. Garlic aioli does go down a treat tho.

That Fish & Chips, was it Orange as in the fruit or was it Just Orange the colour and if so, what made them orange? Fish looked on OK, I saw the darknest of the curry sauce and thought thats a hot one, the peas were not great though were they. 7/10 novel chips, but too expensive.
Massive fan of the channel and chuffed to bits you got down to Wolves and enjoyed my local Majors battered chips. NON locals think your crazy when you say Battered Chips but they are superb in my opinion.
Roadtrip in the EV would be amazin! Look forward to that (if u do) and even if not in the EV, it would be awesome to see! Omg on the Australia/ NZ trip. What a great place and the people are so so awesome.
